A I R M E D I N T E R N A T I O N A L I N T R A N E T D O C U M E N T A T I O N PC Configuration v 6.6 (01 May 2009) There are a variety of requirements and settings that should be made in order for the AirMed Intranet system to function most effectively. Failure to read and follow the recommendations contained herein can result in an unsatisfactory experience with the AirMed Intranet, ranging from total inoperability to confusing function or presentation. Internet Browser Support... 1 Microsoft Internet Explorer Security Settings... 1 Microsoft Internet Explorer Advanced Settings... 4 Microsoft Internet Explorer Pop-Up Blocker... 5 Intranet Reports... 6 Time Zone/Time Display Management... 7 Spell Checker Installation... 8 Sun Microsytems' Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Login Client Configuration Check Internet Browser Support The AirMed Intranet is designed to work with Microsoft s Internet Explorer, version 6.0 or version 7.0. (Version 8.0 is not yet certified, and there are know problems associated with trying to use this with the Intranet.) Results are unpredictable and no support will be provided if any other Internet browser is used (such as Netscape Navigator, Firefox, AOL, Opera, WebTV). (If you are an AOL user, however, you may exploit an AOL connection and still use Internet Explorer. That is, after you ve connected to the Internet using your AOL account, minimize AOL and start up Microsoft s Internet Explorer to use the AirMed Intranet.) Microsoft Internet Explorer Security Settings There are a variety of Internet Explorer settings that ought to be selected before using the AirMed Intranet. Not all of these are absolutely required, but following these instructions will eliminate confusion and errors down the road, and ensure that various Intranet functions operate fully as designed. All of the settings to be discussed are accessed via

the Tools Internet Options menu selection. 1. Define AirMed s website as a Trusted Site There are two web addresses (URLs) that should be added to your list of trusted sites. The first is and the second is (The only difference between these two is the s following the http.) The steps to accomplish this are illustrated below. Note the checkbox that should be unchecked before adding the AirMed URLs. 2

2. Define Trusted Site Settings There are a variety of options that should be unconditionally set. The figure below shows how to get to the list of settings. This is followed by a list of options and the setting that should be selected for each. Depending upon what versions of Internet Explorer and Windows you have installed, not everything shown here will be present. You may ignore those that are not. Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls Binary and script behaviors Download signed ActiveX controls Download unsigned ActiveX controls Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins Script ActiveX controls marked as safe Automatic prompting for file downloads File download Allow script-initiated windows without size or position constraints 3

Display mixed content Submit non-encrypted form data Use Pop-up Blocker Web sites in less privileged web content zone can navigate into this zone Active scripting Scripting of Java applets Disable Microsoft Internet Explorer Advanced Settings Some Intranet reports include background colors and images. In order for these to be properly rendered on both back & white and color printers, the option shown below should be set: 4

Microsoft Internet Explorer Pop-Up Blocker The SP2 version of Windows XP includes an option that causes Internet Explorer to block popups (thankfully!). You should configure the pop-up blocker to ignore the AirMed website as follows: NOTE: It is important to recognize that many of the free Internet toolbars such as are available from Google or Yahoo! also come with pop-up blockers. It is your responsibility to ensure that AirMed s website is designated as exempt from blocking pop-ups. If you fail to do this you can be sure to encounter problems at some point when using the AirMed Intranet. 5

Intranet Reports There are an increasing number of reports being made available through Intranet functions. Most, if not all of these are presented in a separate Internet Explorer window that opens up with the selected report displayed within. Generally at the top, right corner of each such report there will be a small printer icon to the left of a link that can be used to close the report window. To print the report the printer icon should be clicked. The very first time you request a report in this manner, Internet Explorer may present a dialog box similar to the one shown at right. When this appears, you should respond by clicking on Yes, allow. If you have the Microsoft AntiSpyware software installed (Windows Defender) you may also see the dialog box shown at right. If this appears, the proper response to click on is Allow. Other antispyware tools may similarly interrupt and request a confirmation. Regardless of what antispyware utility that may be present, the MeadCo ScriptX Control must be accepted. NOTE: If you have not fully adhered to the recommendations that begin on page 1, entitled Microsoft Internet Explorer Security Settings, you can expect additional problems with printing Intranet reports. 6

Time Zone/Time Display Management Given the global nature of AirMed International s business, the identification and display of dates and times is quite important. The Intranet includes a routine that takes advantage of the time zone and time conversion routines that are included deep in the bowels of Microsoft Windows. In some cases the time management and conversion is performed when a web page is constructed on AirMed s web server, and sometimes these operations are performed on the local PC (which, of course, assumes that the date and time setting for the PC is accurate). To exploit the Windows time management and conversion on the local PC, a small program specific to AirMed s Intranet is automatically downloaded. If the configuration settings described earlier in this document have been set, the transfer of this small program to the local PC should be transparent. It may be, however, that the user will be prompted with a request to allow or disallow this program to be downloaded. When this happens there will be a reference to something identified as TZInfo.cab. OK should be selected. In order to simplify the loading of both the Time Zone and Print management utilities described on the previous two pages, a use-one-time web page can be used to ensure the transfer of the programs occurs ahead of time rather than later, when first needed. The web page can be accessed by way of When this page is loaded, both of the utilities should be loaded. If all goes well, what should be displayed is: This utility loads two required Internet Explorer extensions: TZInfo and MeadCo ScriptX. Any requests to approve these being used should be answered in the affirmative. 7

Spell Checker Installation Several Intranet features take advantage of an Internet-based spell checker. The following pages of this section lay out the process to be followed to install the Internet-based spell checker iespell: 1. Direct your browser to d.php. You should see a page that looks something like the one at right: As you can see, there are several links from which the spell checker may be downloaded. The following instructions pertain to the first option available: CNET Download.com. Click on CNET Download.com 2. The next page that will be displayed should appear something like this: Click on Download Now. 8

3. A security warning dialog window should pop up asking for you to confirm if you want to Run or Save the file. Select Run. 4. Another dialog may appear as shown below. If so, select Run again. 5. Yet another dialog appears asking you to agree to the End User Software License Agreement. Be an agreeable soul and select I Agree.. 9

6. More, more, more Select Install. 7. Finally (almost), you may see another dialog box as shown below. You may safely select No. 8. At long last you re done. Whew! While the purpose of installing this spell checker is so that it s available to AirMed Intranet functions, it is available much more generally. The spell checker can be used whenever you re using text fields on any Internet site! All you have to do is ensure you ve clicked in the field and then right-click to start the spell check process. 10

For example, suppose I type this is a tst of the spel checker into the Google search field and then right-clicked the mouse just before spel : (The spell checker is available two other ways as well. The Tools menu will also include a reference to the spell checker, and there s also an icon added to the Internet Explorer toolbar.) You can start the spell check by selecting the Check Spelling option (or iespell Tools menu option, or the spell check toolbar button). The interface from this point is very similar to that used with Microsoft Word. You can select candidate replacements for words considered to be misspelled, direct the spell checker to apply the desired correction in every instance the same candidate misspelling is detected, direct the spell checker to ignore the supposed misspelling whenever the same supposed misspelling is detected, and 11

accept the spelling as correct, and perhaps add it to your list of acceptably spelled words. There are also spell checker options that can be set. Setting these options can be done by selecting iespell Options when a field is right-clicked (or by way of the iespell Options Tools menu option, or by way of the Options button that s included while the spell check is underway). Again, similar to the way in which the Microsoft Word spell checked can be configured, you can select a variety of options: 12

Sun Microsytems' Java Runtime Environment (JRE) The Medical Contacts and Cities functions display the time of day for alternative time zones. If you do not use or do not have access to these function the material in this section may be ignored. For the alternate time zone time display to operate a particular piece of software must be installed on your PC. This software is referred to as the Java 2 Runtime Edition (JRE). The current version of this software can be downloaded via Do not download the J2SE Development Kit (JDK). The program to download is J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE). There are several versions posted on this website. The one that should be installed is that which is designated for the Windows platform. (You can select either online or offline installation.) There are a couple of ways to predetermine if this software is already installed on your PC. The most obvious is to see if the Intranet page header shows times of day as JRE MISSING. You can also tell if this software is present on your PC from within Internet Explorer by selecting the menu option Tools Internet Options, and selecting the Advanced tab, as shown at right. The checkbox for JRE should be selected (regardless of any version numbers that follow). If this software is not present, other Intranet functions will have the text JAVA SOFTWARE MISSING showing where alternate time zone times would otherwise be included. 13

Login Client Configuration Check When you point your Internet Explorer session to the AirMed Intranet ( a variety of checks are made before the login screen is actually presented. You may see a line at the top of the window that says Checking your PC configuration when this is underway. As a result of this process, several different warnings may be included below the login form: Sound is not available on this PC. This is an information warning only. Sounds are not required for this system to function. This system was designed to be used with Microsoft Internet Explorer. Using this system with any other Internet browser is not certified, and in many cases results are unpredictable. This system was designed to use 'cookies' but 'cookies' have not been enabled in this Internet zone. Sun Microsytems' Java 2 Runtime Environment (J2RE) was not found on this PC (or has been disabled). The absence of this software affects global time of day displays in the following functions: Medical Contacts and Cities. If you do not use these functions the absence of this software should pose no problem. Adobe Reader (also known as Acrobat Reader) was not found on this PC. This software is used by some Intranet functons, so you should download and install this software from the Adobe website at An attempt was made to play a test sound, but the attempt failed. It is therefore concluded that sounds cannot be played on this PC. This would be the case, for example, if there was no sound card installed in the PC. The browser being used to access the AirMed Intranet is not Microsoft s Internet Explorer. There are several functions that use cookies but cookies are not allowed. The Java runtime environment (installed as described in this document) was not found. As such, alternate time zone time-of-day displays in the cited functions will not operate. Instead, JAVA SOFTWARE MISSING will be displayed. Several functions of the AirMed Intranet most notably the eread subsystem heavily use the Portable Document Format (PDF). The absence of Adobe s free Reader software means that PDF files will not be accessible by this PC. 14
