Historically, students who miss several classes tend to receive one grade lower than other students. If I find assignments that are copies of each other, all students involved will receive a zero for the assignment. 1

2 2 Course Objectives This course is part of the MIS Concentration with the overall goal of teaching specific skills needed by workers and managers in that field. The overall objective is to build server-based Web sites that interact with a database. As a project course, a major secondary objective is to learn how to organize the work for a project and communicate with clients. To accomplish this objective, students must acquire a basic understanding of several technologies: (1) How Web sites work, including third-party interactions (2) HTML including style sheets. (3) Web usability including style and page flow. (4) Client-side scripts and their role. (5) Server-side programs and their role in e-commerce. (6) SQL. (7) Web security issues and tools. 5 5 Project Goal: Create a Web site that uses a database to store user interactions. See the project description. Other projects are possible, but must be approved by me as soon as possible. Grading/points available will depend on the level of the project and tools used. The work must be individual (not team). You can ask for help from me. In particular, I will help with any database design. Because of different backgrounds you have a choice of tools and the features to focus on. But grading will be based somewhat on the options you choose. The primary grading will be based on the categories: (a) Functionality Completeness and working features. (b) Usability User perspective, usage flow, and ease of use. (c) Art/Design Colors and layout. (d) Difficulty The level of the project (all static pages counts for less). Bonus points will be given for: (a) The level of programming involved. (b) The quality of the user interface. (c) Complexity of the project. Assignments Assignments are stages in the development of the project but are graded independently. 1. Database design. Define the tables and relationships needed for the project. 2. Web site design. Sketch the primary Web pages (paper or PowerPoint ). They can change later but the goal is to define the main structure and content. Include a brief description of the Web site purpose. 3. Create the main first page including the style sheet. The focus is on design layout and colors which will be used throughout the site. 4. Create the main menu that will be used to navigate the site. 5. Create a prototype version of the site. It does not need complete functionality but should contain the main pages and navigation links. 5
