2 Introduction Workshare Compare Server is a web service that performs server-side document comparison and exposes an API (Application Programming Interface) to allow a range of client applications to exploit this functionality. This API enables software developers to write custom software that compares two Microsoft Word, RTF, PDF or HTML documents and produces a Redline document that describes the differences between the two documents. Workshare Compare Server is installed on a server. This product consists of two server-side components; a web service and an NT service. Note: PDF comparison is supported for PDF version 1.4 and above (Acrobat 5.0 and above). HTML comparison is supported for all HTML except for HTML documents created in Microsoft Word. Workshare Compare Server exposes a simple API that allows for integration into a range of client applications and server-based solutions. For example, it can be used by custom solutions that run on your Internet site, intranet site, internal network or your system. Clients can be developed in Java, C#, Borland Delphi, C++ and other languages to integrate Workshare Compare Server into your desktop, DMS or document applications. This product includes sample applications which can be used to demonstrate the functionality and potential use of Workshare Compare Server. Refer to the Workshare Compare Server Developers Guide for more information concerning using the Workshare Compare Server API and sample applications. 3 What s New in Workshare Compare Server 5.23 This release of Workshare Compare Server includes the following improvement: Supports more formats for the output comparison document. As well as RTF or WDF, the comparison Redline document can now be output in DOC, DOCX or PDF format. System Requirements Workshare Protect Server is designed to run on both entry level and enterprise scale servers. Recommended specifications are given below: Hardware CPU Memory Storage 64-bit architecture-based computer with Intel or AMD processor with 4 cores 4GB RAM 1GB free disk space for installation Supported Operating Systems Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 32-bit Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard x64 Edition Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard x64 Edition (recommended) Note: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Support for Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64) has been removed from Workshare Compare Server 5.2 SR3. Prerequisites The following software must be installed prior to the installation of Workshare Protect Server: Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) (Optional) Microsoft.NET 3.0 Important Information Uninstall: When uninstalling Workshare Compare Server, the MSI file that is placed in the MsiCache folder is not removed from the machine even after completely uninstalling the product. If you want this MSI file removed, you must do so manually. 3

4 Known Issues The following are known issues in the current Workshare Compare Server release and all will be addressed in the next Service Release - for more information, please contact Technical Support. ID Issue 161 Embedded Excel Tables: Embedded tables are not be compared Images: Changes to images are not detected when the comparison is performed using the sample applications of Workshare Compare Server Administration Dashboard: The date and calendar in the Comparison Data tab of the Administration Dashboard are not displayed correctly Config File: Unable to determine what Protocol and Chunk Size are set without checking config file C# Sample Application: When the comparison is performed using the C# sample application, the Document ID and Rendering Set information is not included in the Redline Summary MSMQ Comparison: The MSMQ sample application only supports the comparison of Microsoft Word 2003 documents Advanced Web Application: When trying to perform a comparison using the Workshare Compare Advanced Web application, an error is displayed. Mozilla Firefox and Safari web browsers only Advanced Web Application: When the comparison is performed using the Advanced Web application, the Rendering Set information is not included in the Redline Summary Redline Summary: Information in the Redline Summary, such as original document extension, is displayed incorrectly Administration Dashboard: The Restart Service button in the Settings tab of the Administration Dashboard is not working Administration Dashboard: The Real Time Usage area in the Home tab of the Administration Dashboard is not displaying any information. Mozilla Firefox and Opera web browsers only Removing Installation: Running Remove does not uninstall Workshare Compare Server Footers: After comparison of documents with footers spanning multiple pages, if you save the Redline as a DOCX file and open it in Microsoft Office 2010, the footer changes will not be displayed correctly. 4
