COMPUTER SKILLS LECTURE By Dr. Ali Kattan Mr. Tooraj Hassan Mr. Mohamed Nasseh 1
Common Tasks In this lecture we will cover the following (in 2 lessons with practice): Opening Common Windows Applications to learn how to Save/Load in Notepad WordPad Paint Working with Save / Save As and file location File Name Location: Saving in Documents Location: Saving on Desktop Other locations (next lecture, more details) Deleting your files How to delete the files you created using the Recycle Bin. The subject will be presented while the students are working on the computer to implement the tasks shown. 2
Save/Load your work We studied before that when use any application (software) you want to save your work data, you must save it on the long-term Storage, which is your hard drive (or hard disk). If you don t save, your data will not be available once you turn off your computer. Hard disk can be used to save and load your work. Application Load (Open) Save Hard Drive 3
Save/Load your work We will use these four applications to show how you can save and load your work again. This is similar to many other programs: Notepad, used to write text with simple font formatting. WordPad, used to write text with text & font formatting. Paint, used to draw graphics or edit photos. In MS Windows, like many other operating systems, you Save and Open files. The file has a Name and a Location (place where the file is). 4
Save/Open using Notepad The Notepad is a simple text-editor. A text-editor is a program that is used to type text only. You can only make simple changes in Fonts but you can not use graphics or format text (center, right, justified, etc.) as we will see later. Launch the Notepad application (from Start Menu, taskbar or Desktop icon if available). Type some text then press Enter for new line. Type again like below 5
Save/Open using Notepad Notice that on the top of the Notepad window it says Untitled. This means that the data is NOT saved yet. To Save, click on the top Menu item Files then click on Save : 1 2 6
Save/Open using Notepad This will open a new Dialog Box. A dialog box is used to make selections by the user. This dialog box is used to specify: Name of the file to save. Location of the file to save. Every time you save the file for the first time, this will appear: 7
Save/Open using Notepad On the left side of the dialog box click on Desktop (location), then type the name of the file in File name as mydata, then click Save
Save/Open using Notepad Your file will be saved on the Desktop as an icon (Check?) Now, make some change to the file, type your name and go to the File menu again and click Save. The dialog box will NOT show again because you already gave the file a name and will be saved. 9
Save/Open using Notepad Your file will be saved on the Desktop as an icon (Check?) Now, make some change to the file, type your name and go to the File menu again and click Save. The dialog box will NOT show again because you already gave the file a name and will be saved. 2 1 Close the Notepad application window fromthe x on top right. 10
Save/Open using Notepad Now, to load the file again, we have 2 methods: Method 1: Double click on the desktop icon to open the file. This will automatically launch the Notepad and Open the file mydata. Method 2: Launch Notepad application again and select Open from file menu, then select Desktop location, click on file to select, then click Open. 1 11
Save/Open using Notepad
Save As using Notepad If you want to save your data in a different name, then in this case this will create another file but you must give it a new name. To do this, we will use Save As from File menu. First, open the file mydata and make some changes: 13
Save As using Notepad Now select Save As from File menu, make sure you change the name to mydata2 14
Save As using Notepad If you do this correctly, you will have two files icons on your Desktop: mydata and mydata2 In any OS, no two files can have the same name in the same location. This means that if you save the new file with the name of another file that exist, then you will Delete it!! Write over it. Be CAREFUL, not to delete your data. Let us see how: 15
Save As using Notepad Open the file mydata2 and go to File menu, select Save As. Now change the name in File name to mydata instead of mydata2. Click Save. Windows will warn you and ask you if you want to Replace the exiting file. Remember: This will delete old file and put the new file. 16
Save/Open using WordPad The WordPad is a more advanced text-editor, which known as Word Processor. This Word Processor will let you not just type text, but format text, add photos and many other things. WordPad is good for typing your project reports, homework or writing your lecture notes. We will practice only Save & Open using WordPad. We will not use other options 17
Save/Open using WordPad Now launch the WordPad program from Start Menu. Then type something like below. 18
Save/Open using WordPad Like with Notepad before, go to File menu and select Save. Select Desktop, and name the file project1, then click Save 19
Save/Open using WordPad (Practice) Now do the following step: 1. Close the WordPad application. 2. Double click on the new file project1 to open it. 3. Make some changes in the text and click (x) to close the application? What will happen? 4. After you close the application, open it again fromstart menu. 5. Go to File menu and select Open, find project1 and open it. 6. Make some changes then use Save As with the name project2 on the Desktop. 7. Do step 6 again, but this time select the location Documents (the teacher will show you). Save with the same name project2. Why I can now save with the same name? 8. Select Save As again, now go to Desktop and change the name back to project1. What will happen? 20
Save/Open using Paint The Paint application, is a simple drawing and photo editing software. You can draw simple drawings with it or edityour own photos. Paint is good for drawing not only paintings but also technical diagrams, and other things. We will practice only Save & Open using Paint. We will not use other options 21
Save/Open using Paint (Practice) Now do the following step: 1. Launch the Paint application and draw something. 2. Save your work with the name mypic1 on the Desktop. 3. Close Paint. 4. Reopen mypic1 using two methods (double click on file and starting Paint with File->Open. 5. Make some changes to the drawing. 6. Now use Save As to save with the name mypic2 also on the Desktop. You can also use Save As to Pictures locations. 22
Deleting your files Before you leave the lab, make sure to delete the files created by you ONLY. To do this, drag the files to the Recycle Bin. Do this one by one. Notice that the Recycle Bin looks like this: The files will stay in the Recycle Bin in case you want to change your mind and un-delete the files (drag them back to Desktop). If not, then right-click on the Recycle Bin and choose: EmptyRecycle Bin. Windows will ask you to confirm, click Yes. 23
Remember, you need to Practice Not just look at the slides 24
Thank You 25
