6 How this Manual is Organized This manual is divided into the following chapters: Chapter 1, General Information provides Trilithic contact information and describes how this Operation Manual is structured. Chapter 2, Introduction & Installation describes how to install the Q-Lab software and introduces what the Q-Lab software is and what it does. This chapter discusses the practical application of the Q-Lab software. Finally, this chapter will also explain the controls of the Q-Lab software. Chapter 3, Guided Tour describes how the Q-Lab software is structured and how to use the software. Chapter 4, Configuration describes the steps needed to configure the Q-Lab software. Conventions Used in this Manual This manual has several standard conventions for presenting information. Connections, Menus, menu options, and user entered text and commands appear in bold. Section names, Web and addresses appear in italics. Note: A note is information that will be of assistance to you related to the current step or procedure. CAUTION: A caution alerts you to any condition that could cause a mechanical failure or potential loss of data. WARNING: A warning alerts you to any condition that could cause personal injury. 6

7 2. Introduction & Installation 2 Overview The Q-Lab software is used to facilitate Serial (RS-232) communication between a PC or Laptop computer and the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer. Features The Q-Lab software can be used to perform the following tasks: Create, edit, upload, and download Television Channel Plans Download and preview bitmap images of screen captures Download and export FCC reports Update the firmware of the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer System Requirements Once you have made sure that your system meets the following minimum requirements, you re ready to install the Q-Lab software. Pentium-II or upward compatible CPU 64 MB RAM 10 MB free disk space Windows 2000, XP Professional, or Windows 2003 Color monitor running at 256 colors or higher, 800 x 600 minimum screen resolution Windows-compatible mouse Standard 9-pin serial port Note: Be sure to check the CD for release notes that may affect the installation and configuration process! 7

8 Installation Instructions To install the Q-Lab software, perform the following steps: 1. Depending on the operating system you are installing the Q-Lab software on, you may need to log on as the local administrator. Note: Check with your network or systems administrator if you re not sure about your current login account permissions. 2. Insert the Q-Lab software CD in the appropriate drive. 3. Open Windows Explorer, select the following path [drive]:\q-lab Software Installer\, then double-click the file Q-Lab.msi. (Where [drive] is the name of the CD drive.) 4. The Welcome to the Q-Lab Setup Wizard screen appears, select the Next> button to proceed to the next step of the installation wizard. Note: To cancel the installation of the Q-Lab software at any time during the installation, select the Cancel button. 8

9 5. The Select Installation Folder screen appears, select the Browse... button to choose the destination folder to install the Q-Lab software to. Select the Next> button to start the software installation. 6. The Confirm Installation screen will appear. To proceed with the software installation, select the Next> button. To change any installation settings before installing the Q-Lab software, select the <Back button to go back to the previous setup screen. 9

10 7. The Installing Q-Lab screen will appear momentarily to indicate the status of the software installation. 8. The Installation Complete screen will appear. Select the Close button to exit. The Q-Lab software is now installed. 10

11 3. Guided Tour 3 Overview Once you have installed the Q-Lab software, you re ready to learn your way around. Start the Q-Lab software by double-clicking the Q-Lab icon on your desktop Command Menu - This area contains the commands to exit the program, to change the software view settings, and to display the software version number. 2. Toolbar - This area is used to access each software feature. 3. Status Bar - This area is used to display the status of the software. 11

15 4. Configuration 4 Creating a New Connection to the 8821Q Establish communications between the Q-Lab software and the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer. When the Q-Lab software starts, the Connect Instrument window opens or choose the Connect Instrument button to open the Connect Instrument window. 1. The Connect by a local serial port by selecting its radio button. 2. Select the correct Serial port from the dropdown list. 3. Select the correct Baud Rate from the dropdown list. This Baud Rate must match the Baud Rate of the computer that the Q-Lab software is installed on. 4. Select the OK button to connect to the device. Note: This connection MUST be made with the 8821Q connected to a laptop or PC via the serial port connection. 15

16 Managing Channel Plans Channel Editor Select the Channel Plan Edit button to open the Channel Editor window. Toolbar Icons The Channel Editor window toolbar provides a way to access a number of commands and features. Icon Description Upload Channel Plan - Use this button to upload a channel plan from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer Download Channel Plan - Use this button to download a channel plan to the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer Save Channel Plan - Use this button to save a channel plan to a file 16

17 Icon Description Open Channel Plan - Use this button to open a channel plan from a file Show Channel - Use this button to show the details from the selected channel in the channel plan Sort by Carrier Level - Use this button to sort the channel plan by carrier level Delete Channel - Use this button to delete a channel from the channel plan Undo - Use this button to undo the last change to the channel plan Exit - Use this button to exit the "Channel Editor" window Proceed to the appropriate section as follows: To upload a channel plan from the 8821Q to the Q-Lab software, see Uploading Channel Plans on Page 18. 18 Uploading Channel Plans To upload a channel plan from the 8821Q to the Q-Lab software, perform the following steps: 1. At the ANALYZER, press the MODE button. The [Mode] screen will appear, press the CATV Analyzer > softkey. 2. At the ANALYZER, the [CATV Meas] screen will appear, press the Settings > softkey. 18

19 3. At the ANALYZER, the Settings softkeys will appear on the right side of the [CATV Meas] screen, press the Channel Table > softkey. 4. At the ANALYZER, the [TV Plans] screen will appear, highlight the channel plan to upload by using the up and down arrow keys or control knob on the front panel of the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer. When the white arrow is next to the channel plan to upload, press the Upload > softkey. 19

20 5. At the ANALYZER, the [Upload] screen will appear, to upload using a serial (RS-232) connection proceed to Step 6 or to upload using a USB memory drive proceed to Step 7: 6. Upload via Serial (RS-232) Connection as follows: Note: This step MUST be made with the 8821Q connected to a laptop or PC via the serial port connection. At the ANALYZER, press the RS-232 softkey to upload via serial (RS-232) connection, the #57: Really Trans the File(s) dialog appears in the upper left corner of the display. At the Q-Lab Software, select the Upload Channel Plan button. At the ANALYZER, press the ENTER button. The channel plan will now upload from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer to the Q-Lab software. The progress bar at the top of the Channel Editor window will indicate progress. When the #63: Copy Finished dialog appears, the process is complete. 20

Upload via USB memory drive as follows: Note: The USB memory drive must be plugged into the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer before the unit is turned on, otherwise the USB memory drive will not be recognized. At the ANALYZER, press the USB softkey to upload via a USB memory drive, the #57: Really Trans the File(s) dialog appears in the upper left corner of the display. At the ANALYZER, press the ENTER button. The channel plan will now upload from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer to the USB memory drive. When the #63: Copy Finished dialog appears, the process is complete. To open a channel plan from the USB memory drive in the Q-Lab software, see Opening a Channel Plan on Page

22 Downloading Channel Plans To download a channel plan to the 8821Q from the Q-Lab software, perform the following steps: 1. At the ANALYZER, press the MODE button. The [Mode] screen will appear, press the CATV Analyzer > softkey. 2. At the ANALYZER, the [CATV Meas] screen will appear, press the Settings > softkey. 22

23 3. At the ANALYZER, the Settings softkeys will appear on the right side of the [CATV Meas] screen, press the Channel Table > softkey. 4. At the ANALYZER, the [TV Plans] screen will appear, press the Download > softkey. 23

24 5. At the ANALYZER, the [Download] screen will appear, to download using a serial (RS-232) connection proceed to Step 6 or to download using a USB memory drive proceed to Step 7: 6. Download via Serial (RS-232) Connection as follows: Note: This step MUST be made with the 8821Q connected to a laptop or PC via the serial port connection. At the Q-Lab Software, select the channel plan(s) to download. At the ANALYZER, select the RS-232 softkey to upload via serial (RS-232) connection, the #57: Really Trans the File(s) dialog appears in the upper left corner of the display. At the Q-Lab Software, select the Download Channel Plan button. At the ANALYZER, press the ENTER button. 24

25 At the Q-Lab Software, select the Yes button from the Save and Send this Channel Plan? window. The channel plan will now download to the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer from the Q-Lab software. When the #63: Copy Finished dialog appears, the process is complete. 7. Download via USB memory drive as follows: Note: The USB memory drive must be plugged into the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer before the unit is turned on, otherwise the USB memory drive will not be recognized. Note: Use this option to save channel plans that have been saved to a USB memory disk from the Q-Lab software. At the ANALYZER, press the USB softkey to download via a USB memory drive, highlight the channel plan to download by using the up and down arrow keys or control knob on the front panel of the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer. When the white arrow is next to the channel plan to download, select the OK softkey. The channel plan will now download to the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer from the USB memory drive. 25

26 Saving a Channel Plan To save an existing or modified channel plan to the local hard drive or to the USB memory disk in order to download to the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer, select the Save Channel Plan button. The Save As window appears. Enter the path and file name of the channel plan and select the Save button. Opening a Channel Plan Note: Use this option to open channel plans that have been uploaded to a USB memory disk from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer. To open a channel plan, select the Open Channel Plan button. The Open window appears. Enter the path and file name of the channel plan and select the Open button. 26

27 Show Channel Details To view a selected channel in the channel plan, select the channel to view and select the Show Channel button. The Channel Info window appears. To see all of the channel details, use the scroll bar to scroll up and down. When done making changes, select the OK button to save the changes. To discard any changes or exit without saving, select the Cancel button. 27

28 Managing Bitmap Images Show BMP Select the Show BMP button to open the Show BMP window. Toolbar Icons The Show BMP window toolbar provides a way to access a number of commands and features. Icon Description Upload BMP Images - Use this button to upload BMP images from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer Open BMP File - Use this button to open BMP images from a file Left Arrow - Use this button to scroll through the BMP images in the selected directory. 28

29 Icon Description Right Arrow - Use this button to scroll through the BMP images in the selected directory. Exit - Use this button to exit the "Show BMP" window Proceed to the appropriate section as follows: To upload a BMP image from the 8821Q to the Q-Lab software, see Uploading BMP Images below. To open a BMP File, see Opening a BMP File on Page 33. Uploading BMP Images To upload BMP images from the 8821Q to the Q-Lab software, perform the following steps: 1. At the ANALYZER, press the CONFIG button. The [Config] screen will appear, press the Print/Save > softkey. 29

30 2. At the ANALYZER, the [Print/Save] screen will appear, press the Save > softkey. 3. At the ANALYZER, the [Save] screen will appear, press the View > softkey. 30

31 4. At the ANALYZER, highlight the BMP images to upload by using the up and down arrow keys or control knob on the front panel of the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer to scroll through the list of files. When the white indicator is to the left of the desired image to upload, press the ENTER button and the box to the right of the image will be highlighted indicating that this file is selected for upload. When done selecting the BMP images to upload, press the Transmit File > softkey. 5. At the ANALYZER, the [BMP] screen will appear, to upload using a serial (RS-232) connection proceed to Step 6 or to upload using a USB memory drive proceed to Step 7: 6. Upload via Serial (RS-232) Connection as follows: Note: This step MUST be made with the 8821Q connected to a laptop or PC via the serial port connection. At the ANALYZER, press the RS-232 softkey to upload via serial (RS-232) connection, the #57: Really Trans the File(s) dialog appears in the upper left corner of the display. 31

32 At the Q-Lab Software, select the Upload BMP Images button. The Get Pictures from Instrument window appears, select the Browse button to choose the save path of the BMP image and then select the Start button. At the ANALYZER, press the ENTER button. The BMP image(s) will now upload from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer to the Q-Lab software. When the #63: Copy Finished dialog appears, the process is complete. 7. Upload via USB memory drive as follows: Note: The USB memory drive must be plugged into the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer before the unit is turned on, otherwise the USB memory drive will not be recognized. At the ANALYZER, Press the USB softkey to upload via a USB memory drive, the #57: Really Trans the File(s) dialog appears in the upper left corner of the display. At the ANALYZER, press the ENTER button. The channel plan will now upload from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer to the USB memory drive. When the #63: Copy Finished dialog appears, the process is complete. To open a BMP image from the USB memory drive in the Q-Lab software, see Opening a BMP File on Page

33 Opening a BMP File Note: Use this option to open BMP image files that have been uploaded to a USB memory disk from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer. To open a BMP image from a file, select the Open BMP File button. The Open window appears. Enter the path and file name of the BMP image file and select the Open button. 33

34 Managing FCC Reports FCC Report Viewer Select the FCC Report button to open the FCC Report Viewer window. Toolbar Icons The FCC Report Viewer window toolbar provides a way to access a number of commands and features. Icon Description Upload FCC Report - Use this button to upload an FCC report from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer Export to Excel - Use this button to export an FCC report to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file Open FCC Report - Use this button to open an FCC report from a file 34

Uploading FCC Reports To upload FCC reports from the 8821Q to the Q-Lab software, perform the following steps: 1. At the ANALYZER, press the MODE button. The [Mode] screen will appear, press the CATV Analyzer > softkey. 35

36 2. At the ANALYZER, the [CATV Meas] screen will appear, press the Sys Meas > softkey. 3. At the ANALYZER, the [FCC] screen will appear, press the View > softkey. 36

37 4. At the ANALYZER, the [FCC View] screen will appear, highlight the FCC report to upload by using the up and down arrow keys or control knob on the front panel of the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer. When the white arrow is next to the FCC report to upload, press the Upload > softkey. 5. At the ANALYZER, the [Upload] screen will appear, to upload using a serial (RS-232) connection proceed to Step 6 or to upload using a USB memory drive proceed to Step 7: 37

38 6. Upload via Serial (RS-232) Connection as follows: Note: This step MUST be made with the 8821Q connected to a laptop or PC via the serial port connection. At the ANALYZER, press the RS-232 softkey to upload via serial (RS-232) connection, the #57: Really Trans the File(s) dialog appears in the upper left corner of the display. At the Q-Lab Software, select the Upload FCC Report button. At the ANALYZER, Press the ENTER button. The FCC report will now upload from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer to the Q-Lab software. When the #63: Copy Finished dialog appears, the process is complete. 38

Upload via USB memory drive as follows: Note: The USB memory drive must be plugged into the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer before the unit is turned on, otherwise the USB memory drive will not be recognized. At the ANALYZER, press the USB softkey to upload via a USB memory drive, the #57: Really Trans the File(s) dialog appears in the upper left corner of the display. At the ANALYZER, press the ENTER button. The FCC report will now upload from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer to the USB memory drive. When the #63: Copy Finished dialog appears, the process is complete. 40 Exporting an FCC Report To export an FCC report to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file, select the Export to Excel button. The Export window appears. Enter the path and file name of the Excel file and select the Save button. Opening an FCC Report Note: Use this option to open FCC reports that have been uploaded to a USB memory disk from the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer. To open an FCC report, select the Open FCC Report button. The Open window appears. Enter the path and file name of the FCC report and select the Open button. 40

41 Setting FCC Report Limits To set the limits for the FCC report, select the FCC Limit Set button. The FCC Report limit set window appears. Enter the limits by selecting the current value and typing in the new value. Select the OK button to save the FCC limits. When the Save window appears, select the Yes button to save the changes or select the No button to return to the FCC Report limit set window. Select the down arrow next to the dropdown box to set the units of measurement. Select the Open button to open an existing set of FCC limits or select the Cancel button to discard any changes. 41

42 Firmware Updates To update the firmware of the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer, perform the following steps: 1. At the Q-Lab Software, select the Firmware Update button to open the Update Instrument by Serial Port window. 2. Select the check box next to the appropriate item to update as follows; Main Program - Select this item to update the program that runs on the PC 104 MCU. DSP - Select this item to update the program that runs on the DSP. Logic QAM - Select this item to update the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) logic that is used when the QAM analyzer is running. Logic Spec - Select this item to update the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) logic that is used when used when the spectrum analyzer is running. Logic RBW - Select this item to update the data draw-out Cascaded Integrator-Comb (CIC) filter for the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) logic that is used in the spectrum analyzer when the Resolution Bandwidth (RBW) is smaller than 1 KHz. Logic Time - Select this item to update the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) that is used when the sweep time is shorter than 10 msec. Note: It is not necessary, but it is highly recommended, to update all of the groups at the same time. 42

43 3. At the ANALYZER, press the CONFIG button. The [Config] screen will appear, press the 1/2,More> softkey. 4. At the ANALYZER, the second page of the [Config] screen will appear, press the Service button. 5. At the ANALYZER, the [Update] screen will appear, to update via serial (RS-232) connection proceed to Step 6 or to update using a USB memory drive proceed to Step 7: 43

44 6. Update via Serial (RS-232) Connection as follows: Note: This step MUST be made with the 8821Q connected to a laptop or PC via the serial port connection. At the ANALYZER, press the RS Update softkey to update via serial (RS-232) connection, the Warning! Really Continue? dialog appears in the upper left corner of the display. At the Q-Lab Software, select the Upgrade button. At the ANALYZER, press the Yes softkey. The update process will start. When the update process is complete, you will need to restart the analyzer using the rear panel power switch. CAUTION: If the update process is interrupted before it is finished, the analyzer may be damaged. If this occurs, the analyzer may need to be returned to Trilithic for repairs. 44

Update via USB memory drive as follows: Note: The USB memory drive must be plugged into the 8821Q Spectrum Analyzer before the unit is turned on, otherwise the USB memory drive will not be recognized. At the ANALYZER, press the USB softkey to update via a USB memory drive, the Warning! Really Continue? dialog appears in the upper left corner of the display. At the Q-Lab Software, select the Upgrade button. At the ANALYZER, press the Yes softkey. The update process will start. When the update process is complete, you will need to restart the analyzer using the rear panel power switch. CAUTION: If the update process is interrupted before it is finished, the analyzer may be damaged. If this occurs, the analyzer may need to be returned to Trilithic for repairs. 45

46 Options Settings Press the Options button to change the Q-Lab software options settings. The Instrument Option window will open. Sound Frequency The Show sound by absolute value check box is used to select how the sound frequency is displayed within the channel plan as follows: When the check box IS selected the channel plan will display the absolute value of the sound carrier frequency. When the check box IS NOT selected the channel plan will display the relative value of the sound frequency to the carrier frequency. 46

47 Printing Channel Plans & FCC Reports The print feature is used to print Channel Plans and FCC Reports. To perform the following functions, a Channel Plan or FCC Report must be opened. Print Setup To setup the default printer and printer preferences select File and then select Print Settings. The Print Setup window appears. Note: The printer settings will vary depending on which system that the Q-Lab software is installed on. Check with your network or system administrator if you are not sure about your current printer settings. Select the down arrow next to the Name: field to select the active printer. Select the Properties button to setup the properties of the printer. Select the down arrow next to the Size: field to select the paper size. Select the down arrow next to the Source: field to select the paper source. Select the Portrait or Landscape radio button to select the orientation of the page. Select the OK button to send the document to the printer. Select the Cancel button to cancel the print job. 47

48 Print Preview To preview a print job before sending to the printer, select File and then select Print Preview. The Print Setup window appears. Select the Print button to print the document. Select the Next Page or Prev Page button to scroll through the pages of the document. Select the Zoom In or Zoom Out button to view the whole page or details on the page. Select the Close button to close the window without printing. 48

49 Printing To send a print job to the printer, select File and then select Print. The Print window appears. Select the down arrow next to the Name: field to select the active printer. Select the Properties button to setup the properties of the printer. Select the All radio button to print all pages or select the Pages radio button and enter the range or pages to print. Enter the number of copies to print in the Number of copies field. Select the OK button to send the document to the printer. Select the Cancel button to cancel the print job. 49
