1 EINSTEIN OVERVIEW Einstein (Einstein.franklin.edu) and Codd (codd.franklin.edu) are two servers that are used for many Computer Science (COMP) courses. Students will be directed to use either Einstein or Codd through course assignments and professor communications. To access the Franklin University Unix Servers, known as Einstein (also known as cs), and Codd, an SSH connection must be used. To run programs and compile files, you will need to access the servers through PuTTY. WinSCP can be used to load or copy files from your computer onto the servers. PLEASE NOTE Your login information for the Unix Servers will be the same as that for myfranklin If you are unable to login, please try to synchronize your password by using the Change myfranklin Password link once you have logged into your myfranklin page. 2 DOWNLOAD WINSCP 1. The latest version of WinSCP can be downloaded by clicking here to go to the WinSCP download site Under the Downloading WinSCP section on this page, you will see a hyperlink named Installation package. Click on this link to download the latest version of the WinSCP program (the most current version at the time of this writing is WinSCP 5.7.6). 3. Depending on which browser you are using (we are using Firefox for this installation), you will see a new window like the following popup (Firefox) OR you will be asked if you wish to run or save winscp517setup.exe from download.winscp.net (Internet Explorer) [click Save, then Open Folder ] OR you will see a grey bar appear at the bottom of your browser indicating the file is being downloaded (Chrome) : 4. Click the Save File button (Firefox) to save the file on your computer. It will be saved in your Downloads folder on your PC (or wherever you have indicated downloads should be saved by default). 2 For MAC users, an alternative to WinSCP is FileZilla or FuGu. Please click on one of these links and follow the instructions available at the site for downloading this software to a MAC.

3 INSTALL WINSCP 1. Once the download is complete, go to the place on your computer where the download was saved and doubleclick on the file name (i.e., winscp576setup.exe is the version used for this tutorial). A window like the following will appear: 2. Click the Run button in this window. Answer yes to any security prompts you may receive. The setup will begin. A screen such as the following will appear: 3. Leave English as the chosen language. Click OK to proceed with the installation. A new window such as the following will appear:

4 4. Click Next to continue with the installation. A new window such as the following will appear: 5. In the License Agreement window, click the Accept > button to proceed. A new window appears: 6. Leave the selection at Full upgrade (recommended) and click Next> to continue. A new window appears:

5 7. Click Install to continue. A new window appears, showing you the status of the install 8. Once the install is finished, you will get the following window displayed:

6 9. Click the Finish button to finish the installation. USE WINSCP 1. The following steps will show you how to transfer files to the Einstein or Codd servers. Double-click the WinSCP icon on your desktop: 2. For first the time user, the WinSCP Login window will look like the following: 3. Fill in the appropriate information as is indicated below:

7 - The File Protocol: you select should be SFTP (as shown above). - Enter einstein.franklin.edu in the Host name: textbox if you want to connect to the Einstein server OR enter codd.franklin.edu if you want to connect to the Codd server. - Enter your myfranklin login username in the User Name: textbox. - Enter your myfranklin login password in the Password: textbox. - Make sure the Port number: textbox is set to 22, and the SFTP option is selected - Click Save to save the session for future use. A new window like the following will appear: - Enter einstein OR codd in the Site name: textbox and check the Save password (not recommended) option if you are sure you want to save the session with a password (otherwise you will be prompted to enter the password every time you connect). You may also choose to create a desktop shortcut if you wish. If you are sure your information is correct, click OK. 4. You will be brought back to a screen that looks like the following once you save your session(s): 5. To access a saved session, simply click on the session name (i.e., Codd was clicked on here) and click the Login button (or double-click on the session name only). 6. If this Warning appears, click Yes.

8 7. The following window will appear until you are connected: 8. Once you are connected, you will see a WinSCP window that is divided into a right and a left panel. The left panel lists the files on your computer, and the right panel lists the files on the server to which you are connected (Einstein in this case). 9. To transfer a file or folder from the local computer to the server, simply drag the object from the left panel to the right panel. Click Copy when the Copy window appears.

9 10. As files are copied, the following window will show the progress. 11. You will now see your document in the right panel. 12. To delete a file, click the filename you wish to delete to highlight it, and click the red at the top of the server-side window (marked with a red arrow below).

10 13. To rename a file, click the filename, then the pencil symbol at the top of the server-side window (marked with a red arrow below).

11 ACCESSING UNIX SERVERS THROUGH PUTTY To run programs on the Franklin University Unix Servers Einstein or Codd, an SSH connection must be used. The program PuTTY can be used to connect to these servers. Note: If you already know the login process, but wish to learn some command tips for PuTTY, click here. 1. PuTTY can be downloaded from here. Click where indicated below with the red arrow. Then click on the Save File button to download the executable to your PC. 2. Now go to where the filewas downloaded (usually your Downloads folder on your PC) and double-click on the icon to open the program. Because PuTTY is just an executable file, nothing needs to be installed The below screen is what you will see when first starting PuTTY. 3 For MAC users, an alternative to PuTTY is terminal (should already be present on your machine). Click HERE for more details. Once in the terminal program, just say <username>@codd.franklin.edu to get into the server OR you can user something called SyncTerm as well

12 3. On the left side of the window, under Terminal, click on Keyboard. 4. Select the Control-H radio button under The Backspace key. 5. Click on Session on the left side. 6. In the Host Name textbox, enter one of the following: einstein.franklin.edu (or cs.franklin.edu) OR codd.franklin.edu 7. Select the SSH radio button.

13 8. Under Saved Sessions, enter a name, for example "Codd", and click the Save button. (To load the session in the future, highlight the name in the Saved Sessions list, and click the Load button.) 9. Click on the Open button. 10. The first time a server is accessed, this security alert will appear. It is normal. Click on the Yes button. 11. The below screen will appear. 12. Enter your login name, and hit enter.

14 13. Enter your myfranklin password when it requests your password (there will not be a visual confirmation of your password). 14. Upon a successful login, you will see a system message, and you will be taken to your system prompt. 15. To logout of Einstein, simply type exit in the command line, hit return, and the window will disappear.

15 COMMAND TIPS FOR USING PUTTY COPY AND PASTE TEXT 1. Click and drag to highlight the text you want to copy. 2. To paste the text: a. Move the cursor to the desired location. b. Hit the Esc key to switch to command mode. c. Use the arrow keys to move up, down, right and left. d. Hit the letter I key to switch to edit mode. e. Click the right mouse button to paste the text. BACKSPACE IN A LINE OF TEXT 1. Hold down Ctrl and hit the H key. OR 1. Hit the Esc key to switch to command mode. 2. Hit the J key to move the cursor toward the left. TO MOVE THE CURSOR TOWARD THE RIGHT OR TOWARD THE LEFT ON THE COMMAND LINE 1. Hit the Esc key to switch to command mode 2. Use the H key to move the cursor to the left and the letter L key to move to the right.
