Introduction Lionel icab is an App for Apple iphone and ipod Touch. It s an option part of the Lionel Layout Control System ( In order to use icab, you must have an LCS WiFi Module ( ). For installation instructions for the LCS WiFi manual, see this video: ( And the WiFi Owner s Manual at this link: ( The icab App itself will be purchased and downloaded via the Apple App Store: Connect to the LCS WiFi Using the Settings App on your device, make sure you are connected to the LCS WiFi module. The WiFi network you should connect to depends on the position of the Access point/join to Network on the LCS WiFi module. In Access Point mode, the WiFi will create its own named network Lionel LCS followed by four unique letters and/or numbers. In Join to Network mode, the WiFi module will become part of your normal home WiFi network. Connect to that network before continuing. Launch icab Find the icab icon on the Home Screen of your device. Tap it to open. icab will appear and connect to your Legacy command base (or Base-1L). The message Attempting to Connect will be displayed followed briefly by Loading Data from Base (Legacy base only). Note: If no command base is found, a Failed to Connect message will be displayed. In this case, make sure the LCS WiFi is connected to your command base through the LCS DB9 Cable and power supply. See the LCS WiFi Owner s Manual for more information. Note: If you see a red broken chain link icon in the upper-right corner of your icab screen, refer to WiFi Troubleshooting at the end of this document. 3
Navigating Through icab s Views There are two ways to move around within the icab App. First, to switch between devices (Trains, Switches, Accessories, etc.) tap one of the labeled Navigation Keys to change modes. Swiping to access additional screens To move around within each device s controls and settings, use a swipe gesture. Touch and hold a finger within the highlighted area of the screen shown below. Without lifting your finger, drag up, down, left or right. Depending on the current context, each of these directions may reveal a new view to explore. 4
The Engine Screen Here are the elements of the main screen: TMCC ID# and Name of Active Engine Displays the TMCC ID# (1-98) and locomotive name the same information shown on your CAB2 remote (see Selecting the Active Engine below). WiFi Connection Status Shows a green chain link icon when connected to a Lionel command base. A red broken link icon is shown if no base is present. Without a connection to the command base, you can t run a locomotive. See WiFi Troubleshooting at the end of this document for more info. Throttle/Speed Graph Touch and drag to change locomotive speed. Shows target and actual speed of the active locomotive. Navigation Buttons Choose between controlling Engines, Trains, Switches, Routes or Accessories. 5
Soft Keys The soft key panels can be changed depending on the active engine type, accessory, switch operation, etc. Touch and swipe left or right to change operating keys (where applicable). Touch and swipe up or down to set engine/other parameters and command base settings. Whistle, Bell Direction and Halt Keys These keys will appear in all icab operating screens. For Legacy locomotives, sliding your finger up and down the whistle button will control the quilling whistle feature of your engine. Selecting the Active Engine From the engine screen, tap the orange ENG button a second time. This changes the Soft Key screen to a numeric keypad (below left). Select an engine by typing in a 1 or 2 digit ID number, followed by the Enter Key. 6
Select an Engine from the Roster Alternately, choose an engine from the Roster list (Legacy command base only). Hit the Roster button on the numeric keypad (above left) and the Roster screen appears (above right). To choose an engine, touch it on the list. For example, tapping ROCK ISLAND GP9 (The first entry under Diesel ) will make that engine active and automatically return you to the operating screen. The Engine ID#/NAME display will be updated with the new Active Engine info. For convenience, the Roster list can also be sorted by TMCC ID#. Other Roster Commands If you want to leave the Roster without choosing an engine, tap Cab View in the upper left corner. Finally, tapping Refresh will re-load the Roster list from your Legacy command base. Do this if another engine has been added by another operator, or after 7
rolling a new-to-this-layout locomotive over an LCS SensorTrack. You should also Refresh if any other Cab2 remote or other App has modified something but you re not seeing the change reflected in your Roster screen. Operating the Active Engine If you are familiar with using a Lionel Cab Remote (Legacy CAB2 or CAB-1L) you will find icab to be very similar. Choose the engine you want to run first. Then use the throttle, whistle, bell, direction, etc. to operate the engine. Using the Throttle The biggest difference between icab and a Lionel hardware remote is the throttle. Instead of the big red knob, you ll be using the grey large rectangle near the top of the icab display. To move an engine that is currently stopped, touch your finger over the black vertical bar (near the left edge of the throttle/speed graph) and drag to the right. The vertical black line indicates your target speed. The grey bar shows your locomotives current speed. Depending on your Momentum settings, the actual speed will lag behind the target a little or a lot. This speed graph is the same information shown on the Lionel Legacy CAB2 remote. Using the Quilling Whistle When the Active Engine is a Legacy model, you can operate the quilling whistle by touching the whistle button and dragging your finger or thumb up and down. By default, the top of the button makes softer whistle blows and the bottom increase the intensity of the sound. This matches the behavior of the Legacy CAB2 remote. If you prefer, this can be reversed so loud blows will be triggered from the upper end of the whistle button. (see App Preferences, later in this document). 8
Locomotive Soft Key Screens Three different Soft Key screens can be selected for use with a Legacy locomotive and you can switch between them freely at any time. To navigate between screens, touch and drag your dinger anywhere in a Soft Key screen. The Run Soft Key Screen 9
The Speed Soft Key Screen The Dialog Soft Key Screen 10
Engine History The Engine History feature is a convenient way to quickly switch back and forth between recently used locomotives. Touch and hold the ENG button and a list will appear in the Soft Key area of the display: To choose an engine from the list, simply tap its ID/Name, it will be selected and you ll be returned to the operating view automatically. To close the Engine History without selecting a locomotive, tap the ENG Navigation button again. 11
Engine Detail The engine detail view lets you see and change the various ways icab communicates with your locomotive. For best operation for a particular locomotive, refer to the Owner s Manual that came with your engine. Legacy Engines will automatically appear with their optimum settings if you are using an LCS Sensor Track, or an Orange Memory Module with a Legacy CAB2 remote. To access the Engine Detail view: 1. Tap the ENG Navigation Button if it is not already glowing. 2. Swipe up. 3. The engine Detail view for the Active Engine will appear. You can change any value shown and the new information will be written into your Legacy command base. Tap the I buttons or touch the white area next to Name to modify each detail item. Changes will be reflected in all active remotes (Legacy CAB2 s will update immediately. Other instances of icab will too, following a Roster Refresh). 12
About Trains Building a Train allows you to control a group of Engines as one, in a prototypical manner. In a LEGACY Control System Train, dialog, horn and bell are heard only from the head-end unit. Direction changes are accompanied by reversed lighting. Coupler activation will operate the front coupler of the head-end unit or the rear of the last member of the train. The control and sound options of the head-end unit (such as the Soft Key Screens) automatically become the options for the complete train. It is still possible to control any of the Engines within the train individually. When you issue a Train command, the individual Engine you were controlling will return to the group. If there is a difference in speed, the individual Engine will return to the speed of the train at the rate set in the Train momentum. You may already be familiar with Building a Train using the Legacy CAB2 remote or the CAB-1L. Using icab to build Trains is similar in some ways but different in others. The basic concept is identical you will be creating a train that consists of one or more locomotives and can also include operating rolling stock such as a StationSounds Diner or a Crane car. 13
Building a Train Follow these steps to create a Train: 1. Tap the TR Navigation Button to switch to Train control. 2. Swipe up to reveal the Train Detail screen. (see Train Figure 1) 3. Press Add to add the first engine to the train 4. The Roster view will appear. Touch the first engine you want to add. (Train Figure 2) 5. The first engine appears as shown with the following options set. (Train Figure 3) 6. Touch Add to put a second locomotive into this train. (Train Figure 4) 7. If you want to run your engines back-to-back, hit the direction button and the selected unit will show reversed. (Train Figure 5) 8. To Name the Train, which will make it easier to select in the Roster, tap the Name/ID button (lower left). You can also give it a number by tapping the black number boards. (Train Figure 6) 9. Press Done to exit the Name/ID screen (Train Figure 7) 10. To complete the operation and Save the new Train definition, swipe down. You will be returned to the Train operating screen. (Train Figure 8) The command base will be updated and the horns on each new member of the train will blow briefly. Train Figure 1 Train Figure 2 Train Figure 3 14
Train Figure 4 Train Figure 5 Train Figure 6 Train Figure 7 Train Figure 8 Selecting the Active Train Choosing the Active Train follows the same steps as choosing an Active Engine, except that you first hit the TR button to enter Train mode, rather than the ENG button to enter Engine mode. 15
Operating Accessories icab will control your Lionel operating accessories, such as a command-controlled Sawmill. icab s Accessory view should also be used, even for Accessories like the command-controlled Gantry Crane, which is typically programmed to respond to a TMCC Engine ID, since its operation requires throttle operation for some of its features. To select and operate an accessory: 1. Press the ACC Navigation button to enter Accessory mode. (see Accessory Fig 1) 2. To select between accessories you want to operate, press the ACC Navigation button a second time. (Accessory Fig 2) 3. Enter your Accessory s TMCC ID using the numeric keys and hit Enter to return to the Accessory Run screen. Accessories that use throttle controls for operation If your Accessory uses the throttle to control any of its functions (like rotating a gantry crane), that accessory will be set to an ENGINE, rather than ACCESSORY ID (see your accessory s owner s manual for details). To select and operate an Engine-Addressed accessory: 1. 4. Tap the ENG/ACC button so that (Eng ID) appears as shown at the top of Accessory Fig Hit Enter to return to the Accessory Run screen. Accessory Fig 1 Accessory Fig 2 Accessory Fig 3 16
Operating Switches (aka Turnouts ) Operating a command controlled remote track switch or a remote operating switch wired to a command controller such as an LCS ASC2 is a simple, three step operation. 1. Press the SW Navigation Button to enter Switch mode: 2. Using the numeric keys, enter the one- or two-digit ID of the desired switch. 3. Press the thru or out (the single arrow or diverging arrow buttons, bottom row) to position the switch to the desired direction. Note: Lionel also offers the Lionel LCS App for ipad, which is designed specially for operating layout switches, accessories and track power control devices. Read more about it here: 17
Firing Routes icab can fire Routes that have been previously defined using a Legacy CAB Remote. This is a simple, three step operation. 1. Press the RTE Navigation Button to enter Switch mode: 2. Using the numeric keys, enter the one- or two-digit ID of the desired Route. 3. Press the Fire button and the route will be triggered. Depending on the Route Throw Rate (see Base Detail section below) the switches within the Route may all re-position themselves at once, or one after the other with a brief delay between each. Base Detail Access the Base Detail view by touching and swiping downward. To Close this view, touch and swipe upward. Base Version This shows the software revision of your Legacy Command base. Legacy Base firmware is upgradable, see the Lionel Customer Service website for more information. Base firmware cannot be upgraded from icab. Route Throw Rate This setting determines the time between the operation of each individual switch that makes up a route. You can set it to values between 0 (no delay) to a 2 second delay between each switch command. 18
Warning: If you are using a Lionel SC2 switch controller, use a minimum value of 1.0. This warning does not apply to the LCS ASC2 switch/accessory controller. Update Engine Names Engines without road names and numbers will not appear in the icab Engine Roster. Press this button to update your Legacy database to automatically assign default road names and numbers to these engines. This operation will not affect engines that currently have names/numbers. App Preferences icab s preference settings are not visible with the icab app. Instead, like other ios apps, they can be found by opening your devices Settings App and scrolling down until you see the small icon the text for Lionel icab. Tap this icon or text to view and change preference settings. icab 2 does not need to access Photos or Camera. Version and revision are informational only and cannot be changed by you. Direction for Horn Button This preference setting inverts the operation of the quilling whistle/horn button so that high intensity blows sound when you finger is near the top of the button (Legacy engines only) Speed Slider Update Rate This preference setting refers to LCS App s communication with your Wireless Network and the LCS WiFi module. In most cases, the default setting of 0.5 seconds is appropriate. However, you may experiment with slower values if you suspect your wireless network is especially slow or busy. Enable Button Press Sounds This preference setting turns off the confirming user sounds from your device when running icab. This switch does not effect the sounds that may be generated by the locomotive, car or accessory you are operating. 19
WiFi Troubleshooting icab must be connected to an LCS WiFi module to operate your layout. If this connection is not made, you ll see a red broken link icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Remember that your iphone or ipod Touch must be connected to the wireless network created by your Lionel LCS WiFi module. To check your WiFi Settings: 1. Go to your ipad s Settings App and choose view your current General settings. 2. Click on Network. 3. Under WiFi, be sure you are connected to the network that includes the LCS WiFi module. If your LCS WiFi Access Point/Join Network switch is set to Access Point, choose the network name beginning with Lionel LCS - xxxx. 4. If your LCS WiFi is in Join Network position, connect to the network name of your home or club wireless network. 5. Once the correct wireless network has been selected, return to the icab App 6. If the red link icon is still showing, tap it. When it turns green, you are connected and ready to go. 20
