This dictionary has been designed to let you quickly find Japanese words and kanji, and its unique interface is easily learned. wishotouch consists of three parts: Handwriting search, Kanji search and Word search. 3 WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE» 1 1 Handwriting search wishotouch comes with a full-screen handwriting pad, and this is the fastest way to look up kanji. You need to know the right stroke order, but results are sorted in a such a way that most of the time you don t need to draw the whole character, saving you time. Optimal drawing area is approximately the size and location of the stroke-order animations. Results of your search appear in these tiles. Touch a kanji to see its details, or touch-hold for other options. Drawing controls let you undo strokes or clear the screen. You can redo a stroke(s) after undo by shaking the device; if there is nothing to undo, the screen is cleared. Shortcut: To go directly to Kanji search, tap the handwriting icon in the toolbar.

4 2 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE Touch-holding a kanji in the results brings up these options: Copy the kanji to the pasteboard Search for it in the Word dictionary Append it to the contents of the Word Search field Search for compounds with the kanji in initial/final position Jump to an external dictionary (see Links ).

6 4 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE 2 Kanji search Kanji search is accessed by touching any kanji. You can also go there directly by touching the Handwriting toolbar icon if you are in Handwriting search, or the Word search toolbar icon if you are in Word search. This section explains the various controls and provides a usage example. Touch the big white kanji to look up its compounds. Touch hold the kanji for other options. Touch a gray label at left (making it red) to browse or search kanji by that attribute. and arrows let you browse similar kanji, in this case those with radical 尸. Search icons let you find kanji by the highlighted attribute, in this case radical. Reorder icons are for changing the order of the rows. Rotate the device to browse the kanji at larger size in landscape mode.

7 Let s say you want to look up 在. You ve forgotten how to draw the kanji but know that it has 6 strokes and the radical 土. First touch the radical label (making it red), then touch its search icon, bringing up this screen. Next select the number of strokes in the radical (3 for 土 ), then the radical 土, then Done. 8 6 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE This gives you 125 kanji with radical 土. Since this is a lot, you can filter by number of strokes. To do this touch the search icon in the strokes row. (Note: If there are less than 10 kanji to begin with, search icons will not appear in the other rows there are too few to filter.)

9 WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE» 7 To cancel a search, touch the translucent screen. Now you can limit your search to kanji having radical 土 and the selected number of strokes, in this case 6.

10 8 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE This gives you 5 kanji, and 在 is the first one. Touching the and arrows shows the other kanji having radical 土 and 6 strokes. The search filter is indicated by a green label. To unset the filter, touch any label. Touch this icon to see the kanji s stroke-order animation (detailed in the following screen).

11 WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE» 9 Current/total strokes of the animation are shown here. Touching a stroke order animation (once it s finished or paused) takes you back to the kanji s details. Pause or replay the animation with this control. To clear the animation and restore the handwriting pad, use the Clear button, or shake the device. Slider control lets you go back and forth through any part of the animation, or pause by touching the thumb.

12 10 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE 3 Word search Tightly integrated with Kanji search, Word search lets you quickly jump between a kanji and its compounds. You can also search for words in English and Japanese, and filter queries with an additional term in either language. (Note: LITE version requires Word search module.) Whereas touching the big white kanji in Kanji search looks up its compounds, here you can touch any kanji to see its details. To return to the screen in the previous example, you would simply touch the same kanji in a word. Touchhold a kanji for other options. Touch a blue label to sort results by part of speech (making them purple). To unsort, touch the label again. Shortcut: Touch the menubar to quickly scroll to the top of a long list (this also works in most other apps). Touch the row (outside of a kanji) to see longer entries in their entirety, to copy them to the pasteboard or to jump to other searches.

13 WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE» 11 Touch a kanji to see its details, or touchhold for other options. Touch a speaker icon to hear a (synthesized) pronunciation. Save a bookmark of this entry. The kana button reveals the reading. Touch-hold a word to select, or for other options. Swipe left or right for the previous/ next entry.

14 12 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE To search in romaji, touch the red button. This search for 在 found over 200 results. You can filter these by adding a second term in either language. In this case searching for 在 and school finds three results. To exclude entries containing the second term, use a hyphen, e.g. -school (without the quotes). Shortcut: To undo/ redo typing, shake the device (this also works in most other apps). To cancel a search, touch the translucent screen.

15 WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE» 13 4 Bookmarks To manage your Bookmarks, tap the icon in the toolbar, then the Edit button. Now you can reorder, delete and create folders for Bookmarks, and send (export) them, too. To delete a bookmark or folder, touch the red button. Shortcut: To delete without tapping the Edit button, swipe across a row. Reorder icons are for changing the order of the rows. To delete all bookmarks and folders, tap the Clear button. Tap this button to create a Bookmark folder.

16 14 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE You can send the contents of Bookmark folders you ve created by going to the folder, tapping the Edit button and then Export.

17 When sending Bookmarks you have two choices: Text or Folder. Text puts the kanji and readings (or Word entries) into the body of the message; Folder uses an attachment that can be imported by recipients who have wisho- Touch. WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE» 15

18 16 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE This screen shows what comes up after selecting Folder. Now tap near the To: field, enter an address and hit Send. The user who receives the message on their iphone/ipod touch can import the Bookmarks by tapping the icon.

19 WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE» 17 5 Links Links improve your workflow by letting you automatically search for kanji and words in other apps and online dictionaries. To bring up the Links window, tap Jump... after touch-holding a selection.

20 18 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE Simply touch a row to search that dictionary for the word or kanji you selected, or touch Edit to reorder, rename, add or delete a link. Links for some common apps are included, if you have them installed. The Scan button searches for these apps if you have installed them and they do not appear, and restores their links if you accidentally delete them. You can add your own links by tapping New Link. 21 WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE» 19 Similarly, you can jump to wishotouch from apps that provide for this functionality. For example with EBPocket Pro, go to Preferences-> Web Search, enter the name and copy/paste the URL: wishotouch://kanji/?srcna me=ebpocket&src=ebpock et://&kanji= with UTF-8 selected.

22 20 «WISHOTOUCH QUICKSTART GUIDE Now when you select text in EBPocket Pro search results, then tap it, wishotouch appears among the options in the popup window. If the text you selected is a single kanji, wishotouch will show its details; other text is looked up in the word dictionary.
