1 Library and Learning Resources Using online databases: RefWorks What is RefWorks? RefWorks is a web-based research management, writing and collaboration tool that allows you to gather, organise, store and share articles and references. You can include the references when writing documents and RefWorks can automatically format the cited references and final bibliography in a range of output styles. How do I access it? Go to LibrarySearch from the portal Library tile or the Library Services website ( Sign in using your CCCU username and password Select Find Databases, click on R, then right click on the link to RefWorks to open this in a new tab or window Select Find Databases LibrarySearch main page How do I use it? NB: The first time you use RefWorks you will need to register using your CCCU and to activate your account. Getting started importing references from LibrarySearch 1 Select the references you want by clicking on the stars to turn them yellow. They will now be saved to your e-shelf. 2 Click on e-shelf

2 3 In e-shelf, check the items you want to save to RefWorks 4 Choose Push to RefWorks from the drop down menu, & 5 Click on Go (and select Export to the new RefWorks with the blue square). 6 You should receive a message informing you that the import has been successful 7 Click on OK to see the references. The default is for the references to show in a brief form, called Normal View. To change this, click on the tab, in the bottom right of the screen, to choose Full View (expanded form) or Citation View. The Edit function is available on Full View You can save an individual reference directly from the LibrarySearch Results list (without saving it to the e-shelf first) by clicking on the Details tab, and using the Actions drop down menu to send it to RefWorks..

3 Creating a folder in RefWorks to organise your references Any references you have imported into RefWorks will be in the last imported area. 1 Click on My Folders in the left hand column & choose Add a folder 2 Type a name for your folder in the box. 3 Click on Save You can move references into the folder by dragging and dropping them in individually, or by selecting several and using the Folders icon (Assign selected references to other folders) along the top menu bar to Add them to a named folder or Create a new one. You can create sub-folders if required The references will be moved to the chosen folder and you will receive a message at the top of the screen to confirm the action has been completed Menu bar hover over the icons to see their function Find duplicates function is under the More icon. This will find Strict Match or Fuzzy Match items. Explanations of the two Match searches are given.

4 Adding References You can add a reference manually if you cannot import it automatically. 1 Select Add a reference from the menu bar. 2 Choose Create new reference (3) Fill in details and click on Save You can copy and paste to fill in the details and some suggestions may be offered by the system as you type. You do not have to complete all the boxes. You can also upload individual articles or documents. As you highlight and drag the item from a saved area to RefWorks, the blue Drop files here circle will appear. You can check that the publication data have been added correctly and edit any errors. Install the Save to RefWorks button on your browser bar to add references and full-text from any webpage. Click the More icon and follow the installation information.

5 To use the right reference style (e.g. Harvard ) Go to Create Bibliography and choose Citation Style Editor from the drop down menu. Search for and select the style of referencing you need to use. Cite Them Right Harvard is the CCCU version of Harvard, but some programmes require other styles. Creating a bibliography RefWorks can help you create a bibliography from your stored references: Choose the references to use by selecting them individually or by highlighting a folder in the left hand column Click on the Create bibliography icon on the Menu bar Check that the correct citation style is showing at the top of the screen. If not, use the drop down menu to change to the correct style. The bibliography or reference list will be created automatically You can choose and insert the list as required in your Word document. You can also use Write-N-Cite, a free Word add in program provided by RefWorks. This allows you to insert citations directly from RefWorks into a Word document. See the separate guide for details or find it under the More icon (then Tools) on the menu bar. 6 RefWorks Import and Export Filter Guide This table explains how to export/import references from individual databases. From off campus it is best to open RefWorks before you start. NOTE: For some databases you may need to make sure that you have allowed pop ups from the site. Database Exporting references Importing to RefWorks Art Full Text See CINAHL Select references you want by clicking the check boxes. ASSIA From the Save menu choose RefWorks. Click Continue. British Education Index See CINAHL British Nursing Index See ASSIA British Periodicals See ASSIA Business Source Premier See CINAHL Select records by clicking on the blue folder icon to the right of the page. Click on Folder at the top of page CINAHL Select references by clicking in the check box. Select the Export icon. Select Direct Export to RefWorks. Click Save. Cochrane Library COPAC (National, Academic & Specialist Library Catalogue) CReaTE In Cochrane Library, select references by clicking the check boxes. Choose 'Export all or Export selected. On the popup screen, choose your export options and click on 'Export citation'. Save the file as a Text Document. In RefWorks, click on + (to Add a reference) and choose Import references Select the saved text file. In pop-up window, select or type in the file type: Cochrane Library Select the database: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews Click Import. In RefWorks, click on + (to Add a To export items one at a time reference) and choose Import On the individual reference screen, references Select the saved text click on Export as link, Choose : file. EndNote, Zotero and click on Export In the pop-up window, ensure it Save the file as a Text file shows the file as RIS format, and choose RIS format again from the drop down menu. Click Import Where more than one reference is saved, look for the Export results as box, choose RefWorks and click on Export. Save the reformatted document as a Text File. For a single item, click on Tools ; choose RefWorks from the dropdown menu, & click on Export. Whether you have saved several references or just one, in RefWorks, click on + (to Add a reference) and choose Import references Select the saved text file.

When the screen reformats, click on Submit data to RefWorks See ASSIA In the pop-up window, ensure it shows type of file as: RefWorks Tagged Format and click Import. Click Settings. At Bibliography Manager, tick Show links to import citations into and choose RefWorks Google Scholar from the drop down menu. Click on Save. When next you run a search, click Import into RefWorks below any reference you want. Humanities Index (formerly British Humanities See ASSIA Index) IngentaConnect International Bibliog. of Theatre and Dance JSTOR LexisLibrary and LexisLibrary Newspapers Select articles by Adding to Favourites. Under Tools, select Export options and choose plain text. In the new screen, save the reformatted document as a Text File. See CINAHL Select references by clicking the check boxes. Near the top of the screen, click on Export Selected Citations and select Export to RefWorks. In RefWorks, click on + (to Add a reference) and choose Import references Select the saved text file. In the pop-up window, select or type in the type of file: Ingenta Select the database: Online articles Click Import. NB You can register for a MyJSTOR account for extra features. This only lets you export items one at a time Go to the Journals. tab, run your search and click on You may need to edit the record as the title of an article you want to information may appear in the export. Click on Export Saved Citations Choose Option 1: RefWorks by clicking on Export to RefWorks. Select references by clicking the check boxes. Click on Export. On the popup screen, select RefWorks against Export to, select any other export options required, and click on 'Export citation(s)'. See CINAHL. ScienceDirect Select references by clicking the check boxes. Click on the Export link. Under Direct export select Save to Refworks. Social Policy and Practice See PsycINFO SPORTDiscus See CINAHL Taylor and Francis Online Journals To export items one at a time On the individual reference screen, click on Download citation link. Choose format: RefWorks Direct Export and click on Download citations Web of Science Select multiple references as you move through the pages of results. Remember to Add to Marked List before you move on to the next page. Click on Marked List. At Step 3, for destination choose: Save to RefWorks. For references from a single page, choose Save to RefWorks at the top or bottom of the page and on the popup, choose the appropriate Record Content and click Send.
