1 RefWorks is a web-based bibliography and database manager that allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases and other various sources. You can use these references in writing papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography in seconds. 2 How to create an account: Go to the library home page Click on your local library tab to locate St Conal s hospital Click on RefWorks listed under resources available Click on Sign up for a new account Step 1 Account Information Fill in all fields on the form Click on Next to proceed Step 2 User Information Fill in all fields on the form Click on Create Account 2
3 How to create folders: Click on the New Folder button Name your folder and click on Create. You can create as many folders as needed. To view and edit folders, click on the Organize Folders tab. You can edit folders here by right clicking on the name of the folder. 3
4 How to add references from CINAHL: Do a simple search on CINAHL, for example Nursing and Leadership From the list of results, select 5 references by clicking on Add to folder icon beside each reference Click on the folder icon at the top of the screen. This will bring you to a screen with your 5 references from your search. Click on the Select / deselect all checkbox Click on the Export button 4
5 At the next screen you need to select Direct Export to Refworks. Click on Save. The 5 references will be automatically exported to your RefWorks account once you have logged in. The Import References window will open. Click on the View Last Imported Folder to view your references. References can then be moved to an appropriate folder by selecting the references to be moved and the appropriate Folder from the dropdown list. 5
6 How to add references from PubMed: In PubMed perform a search and select the references you want to import by clicking on the checkbox on the right hand side of each record. Next, select citation manager from the Send to pull down menu and click the create file button. A maximum of 500 references can be exported at one time. 6
7 The records should be saved on your PC as citations.nbib Log into your RefWorks account and click on the Import icon on the right hand side of the screen. Select NLM PubMed from the Import Filter/Data Source pull down menu Select PubMed from the Database pull down menu And then click on Choose File to find the text file citations.nbib 7
8 Finally click on the Import button to import the references. References will be held in the Last Imported Folder How to add references from Google Scholar: From the Google Scholar homepage click on the settings icon at the top of the screen At the bottom of the Scholar Settings page, in Bibliography Manager select RefWorks (dropdown menu) in Show links to import citations into Click on Save 8
9 Search results will now display an Import into RefWorks link When you click on the Import into RefWorks link, the reference is automatically imported into the last imported folder in your RefWorks account (once you have logged in). How to create a bibliography: First choose your folder of references from your RefWorks account Click on Create Bibliography Select the Output Style (for example Harvard British Standard) Select the File Type (for example Word for Windows) 9
10 Click on Create Bibliography A bibliography is created automatically. British Journal of Nursing, 25(18), pp How to use Write-N-Cite: To use Write-N-Cite in Word, you first need to download the utility from the Tools menu in RefWorks. Click on the Tools menu at the top of the screen and click on Write-N-Cite. Click on the appropriate version of Write-N-Cite for your PC. Please note that Word should not be opened when installing. 10
11 Write-N-Cite will install a toolbar in Word for easy launching of the software. Before inserting citations into your document, you will need to select a referencing style for example Vancouver, Harvard etc from the drop down menu. To insert a citation into your word document, click on the Insert Citation drop down menu and click on Insert New (make sure your cursor in Word is sitting in the correct place) 11
12 An insert / edit citation box will open with your RefWorks folders listed down the left hand side click on the appropriate folder and reference to be inserted click Ok. Once your document is complete with all your references inserted, you can create a bibliography by clicking on the Bibliography Options drop down menu and clicking on the Create Bibliography option. The bibliography will be inserted wherever the cursor is located in Word so make sure that the cursor is at the end of your document before insertion. Save your formatted paper. 12
