[ professional development ] INNOVATE TEACHING AND LEARNING Lori Gracey Executive Director lgracey@tcea.org twitter.com/tcea

[ Handout ] Uploaded to the Presenter Portal website or ly.tcea.org/ipadtips

[ Improving Battery Life ] - Turn off WiFi - Turn off Bluetooth - Lower Brightness - Screen Lock set to 2 minutes - Power Off v. Sleep Mode - Always make sure your ipad has the latest software as Apple engineers may find new ways to optimize battery performance.

[ Trick ] When you need a quick charge: Put your device in Airplane mode; it will charge twice as fast.

[ Move Between Home Screens ] To move quickly through several screens, tap to the left or right of the little white dots at the bottom of the screen. Pressing the Home button will take you back to the first screen.

[ Moving Apps Trick ] Keep one space free in your Dock (have five apps instead of six). To move an app from one screen to the next, drag the app into your Dock. Then swipe to the page you want the app to appear on. Now drag the app from your Dock into place on that page. Easy!

[ Move Multiple Apps Trick ] 1. Put the apps you want to move in a folder. 2. Move the folder to the Dock. 3. Swipe to the first screen where you want to place an app from the folder. 4. Tap the folder to open; then drag and drop the app. 5. Repeat as needed until all the apps in the folder are where you want them. 6. The folder automatically disappears when you empty it.

[ Opening an App Fast ] Simply tell Siri Open the {app name} and she ll immediately open it for you.

The Settings App Tips and Tricks

[ Memory and Space ] Check the current memory status in the Settings app > General > Usage. At the top of the Usage page, you ll see how much free space is remaining, along with a list of all your apps sorted by size. The MB/GB size next to each app represents the actual application size plus its downloaded content (e.g. charts, movies, music, etc.). The easiest way to free up space is to remove photos and videos. Then review this list and see if there are any apps that you don t use any more. Rule of Thumb: Leave at least 2GB free

[ Memory and Space ] You can also go to the Settings app General About To quickly see what you have available. Don t let your ipad have less than 2GB free!

[ Which Apps Are Draining You ] To find out what apps are draining your battery: Go to Settings, General, Usage, and then Battery Usage.

[ Don t Keep Messages Forever ] Save space on your device by going to Settings, Messages, Message History, and changing the time to delete messages to 30 days.

[ Automatic Downloads from Another Device ] If you have multiple Apple devices, there's a default setting that automatically downloads all purchases across all devices to every device linked with that itunes account. To stop that: Settings itunes & App Store Toggle off as needed

[ Automatic Updates ] Turn on Automatic Updates and you ll never have to enter your password to update again. Settings itunes and App Store Turn Updates on

[ Spotlight Search ] Use the Spotlight to find s, contacts, apps, music, and more. Pull down in the center of the screen to access the search bar.

[ Restrict Your Spotlight Searches ] To restrict the areas Spotlight searches (since you may not want all these categories included): Settings app General Spotlight Search Tap on and off Change the search order

[ Restrict Websites Accessed ] Settings General Restrictions Websites for allowed site options

[ Keep Your Privacy ] Settings Settings Privacy Privacy Advertising Diagnostics & Usage Turn on Limit Ad Select Don t Send Tracking Settings Privacy Location Services Turn Twitter location settings off

[ Speak Selection ] To have the ipad read web pages, PDFs, ibooks, and more: Settings General Accessibility Speech Turn on Speak Selection and/or Speak Screen Select a different Voice, if you wish Adjust the Speaking Rate Turn Highlight Content on Once activated, press and hold a word, then tap Speak

[ Guided Access ] Settings General Accessibility Guided Access

[ Increase the Size of Text in Apps ] Settings Display & Brightness Text Size Slide the bar to increase text size

[ Safari Settings ] Settings Safari Search Engine Select what engine you want as the default Settings Safari AutoFill On Use Contact Info > On Names and Passwords On (only for the teacher ipad) Settings Safari Block Pop-ups On

[ Screenshot ] Hold down Home button and click the sleep/wake button at the same time. The screen will flash and you'll hear a click, indicating that a photo has been taken. Your screen shots are saved automatically in your Photos gallery. Here, you can view or them as you choose.

Built-In Apps Tips and Tricks

[ Set Context-Aware Reminders ] While in an app, press and hold the Home button and tell Siri to Remind me about this at 9 am tomorrow. Siri will create a timed reminder that links you directly back to the app you were using, or to the web page you were viewing.

[ Access the Dictionary in Safari ] Highlight the word Tap Define and the dictionary will appear with the defined word.

[ Don t Have a Dictionary? ] If you don t have a dictionary selected, follow these steps to add one: Tap on the word you want to define to select it and activate the popup. Tap on Define to call up the dictionary. Tap on Manage. Tap the icloud button beside any extra dictionaries you want to download. Tap the X button beside any extra dictionaries you want to remove.

[ Offline Reading in Safari ] With Safari Reader, you can read content saved when you are offline. Tap on the Action icon Tap Add to the Reading List To read offline: Tap on Open Book icon, eyeglasses icon

[ Remove Distractions ] If a webpage is Reader friendly, the Reader icon (four horizontal lines) will appear on the left side of the URL/search field. Tap on the icon and the downloaded article will be stripped of ads and other surrounding data, leaving you with the text and some images for a more pleasant reading experience.

[ Notes ] The fastest way to get one number or symbol is to slide your finger from the 123 key.

[ Split Keyboard ] Tap and hold the Hide Keyboard button on the virtual keyboard (it looks like a keyboard) and choose Split from the pop up menu. Return the keyboard to its normal position by pressing the button again and choosing Merge and Dock. Or just swipe two fingers across the keyboard to split it.

[ Invisible Keys with Split Keyboard ] If you have your keyboard split, Apple has provided some invisible keys to make typing easier, as shown in the photo to the right.

[ Shake Off Typing Errors ] Shake your ipad and an Undo Typing alert box will appear. Tap Undo to delete the text.

[ Recover Deleted Mistakes ] If you accidentally deleted an , recover it by shaking the ipad and tapping Undo.

[ Caps Lock On ] To turn your caps lock on, double tap the Shift key. The keys will turn dark gray with a white arrow.

[ Instant Period ] Double-tap the space bar at the end of a sentence Will add a period, a space, and capitalize the first word of the next sentence.

[ Accent Marks ] Hold your finger over any vowel, c, n, zero, -, $, &, period symbol,?,!, apostrophe symbols, or % to reveal additional character options. Where is the degree symbol hiding? How about the ellipsis? ( )

[ Have Siri Take Dictation ] Any time you see the small microphone icon next to the spacebar on the keyboard, dictation is available. Tap anyplace you can type text, and then tap the microphone to start dictating. When you re finished, tap Done and then wait for your words to be processed.

[ Notes Spelling ] Tap and hold your finger over the word you want to look up and select Define. If your dictionary is missing, tap Manage and select a dictionary. Be patient; it takes a little bit of time.

[ Keyboard Shortcuts ] Settings General Keyboard Customize auto-corrections Add shortcuts

[ Emoji Icons ] Settings General Keyboards International Keyboards Add New Keyboard Emoji This is how you ll add other keyboards as well.

[ Switch Between Keyboards ] Tap on the Globe icon on your keyboard to quickly switch between installed keyboards.

[ Easier Photos ] Taking a photo with the on-screen shutter button can be hard and require some interesting maneuvers. Instead, use the Volume Control button on the side to snap the shot.

[ Even Easier Photos ] Plug in your headphones and use the volume control button on them to take a photo.

[ Fast Photos ] To take a quick photo when your device is off, press the Power button (not the Home button) and then swipe to the left to access the camera.

[ Darkness ] When taking a photograph, if the sunlight is too bright or too dark, simply tap on the screen and then press and slide up the sunlight icon and it will allow you to adjust the exposure as needed.

[ Burst Mode ] Burst mode delivers a number of shots with one press. To get started, instead of giving the camera trigger one touch, push and hold. This action will deliver as many as 10 photos per second. This is good for whenever the photo you re taking has movement.

[ Record Video ] Camera Photo and slide down to select video. Switch between the cameras to choose the one you want to use. Tap the record button to start and stop the recording. To edit, watch, and/or delete the video, tap the previous photo/ video thumbnail

[ Record Widescreen Video ] The ipad screen has a 4:3 ratio. This means that, by default, any video you record on the ipad will be kind of square and have black bars on the side of it when viewed on a widescreen TV, a laptop, or on YouTube. However, you can fix this by enabling 16:9 (widescreen) video recording. Camera Video Double tap the screen to change to a 16:9 aspect ratio

[ Trim Your Video ] After selecting the video, drag each end to the desired location. Click Trim. Choose Trim Original or Save as New Clip. When editing your video in the Camera Roll, you can only trim each end; you cannot remove a part in the middle.

Odds and Ends Tricks and Apps That Make You Go Hmmm

[ Playing Cards ] Purchase the app Card Table for $1.99 and turn your ipad into a card table as players use their iphones to hold the cards in their hands.

[ Trouble Sleeping? ] The Sleep Machine Lite app includes 10 ambient sounds guaranteed to drown out the party crowd noise outside your hotel room.

[ Better Night Reading ] Black text on a white background can be a strain on your eyes, especially at night. To invert colors on your ipad, go to: Settings General Accessibility Toggle on Invert Colors

[ Free ebooks ] You can download a complete catalog of the 53,000 public domain books in Project Gutenberg by going to ly.tcea.org/gutenberg. Once in the catalog, you can click on any book to download it.
