1 ipad Intermediate ios9 Multi-touch gestures Four-finger swipe up: Want to see the app switcher, showing you the most recently used apps? You can tap an app to open it or swipe up to close an app. Simply tap the home screen window or the home button to hide the app switcher. o Swipe up in the app switcher to close an app or up to three apps at a time. Four-finger swipe left / right: While in an app, swipe four fingers left or right and the ipad quickly moves you through your running and most recently used apps. Five-finger pinch: Here you just grab the screen at any point to get back to the Home screen. It s quick, fast and simple. A swipe up from the bottom of the screen brings up the Control Center that gives us quick access to system toggles and lots more. A swipe down from the top half of the home screen brings up the Quick Search bar. A similar search, Siri Suggestions, can also be swiped in from the left edge with a more advanced Siri interface. Swipe from the right edge while in one app for a slide/split screen view of other apps. *Only available on ipad Mini 4 and ipad Air 2 Swipe from the left edge in Safari to go back one page; swipe from the right edge in Safari to go forward. Quick search/siri Suggestions A swipe down with one finger from the home screen brings up the Quick Search interface. Use this to search for anything on your ipad (i.e. contacts, s, apps, etc.) Swiping in from the left side brings up Siri Suggestions, a more comprehensive search with easy options for frequently used contacts, find nearby, and news. 1

Airplane mode Bluetooth Silent Screen brightness control Volume and media controls WI-FI Do not disturb Lock Screen Orientation Clock app Camera app App Switcher The App Switcher lets you quickly switch back and forth between different apps. This is also where you can shut down an app that isn t working properly or has frozen. To see all the apps you have recently been using, tap your home button twice (or swipe upwards with four fingers). You can scroll through all your recently opened apps and tap on any of them to open them back up. To close an app that has stopped responding, open the app switcher (see above). Then, scroll until you find the app you would like to shut down and with one finger, swipe upwards to make that app disappear. Tap your home button to return to your homescreen. Backing up your ipad There are two methods of backing up your ipad: through icloud or through itunes on your home computer. There is always a small chance your device could be wiped clean when upgrading to a new operating system or if it malfunctions, so it s good practice to frequently back up your device(s). 2

3 To back up to your computer, plug in your device using the USB cord, open itunes, and if it does not start backing up automatically, click the "Back Up Now" button. If your photos are not set to back up automatically, use iphoto on a Mac and Windows Explorer on a Windows PC to make copies of all your pictures. Another option is to skip the cord and back up to icloud over Wi-Fi. On your device, go to Settings > icloud > Storage & Backup. Tap the "Back Up Now" button. Folders Once you start downloading many apps, your home screen can quickly get cluttered. An easy way to organize your apps is in categorized folders. To start moving apps around, press and hold your finger down on any app until they begin wiggling. Press and hold an app you would like to place in a folder and drag it on top of another app you d like to group it with. Release the app and a new folder will be created. You can edit the name of the folder by tapping the name at the top and typing in a new title. To make the apps stop wiggling, press your home button once. Safari A great way to manage many of your favorite, most recently visited websites is through Bookmarks and the Favorites bar. Tap the Bookmarks menu icon next to the address bar in Safari to expand the menu and access your bookmarked sites. From this menu, you can delete bookmarks, create new folders, move bookmarks and change their title. To do any of these actions, tap the Edit button in the lower right corner of the Bookmarks menu. To delete a bookmark, tap the red minus sign next to it. Then, tap Delete. To create a new folder, tap New Folder in the bottom left corner. You will be prompted to enter a Title for the folder, as well as choose where it is located (i.e. in Favorites, Bookmarks bar, or within another folder). To create a new bookmark, navigate to a website of your choosing. When you are on the page that you would like to bookmark, tap this icon found to the left of the address bar. A menu appears with many different options. Tap the Bookmark option. From here, you can edit the name of the bookmark and change where it will be located. When finished, tap Save. Safari Reader a useful tool when reading articles on cluttered websites is to use Safari Reader. Use Safari Reader to focus on a page s primary content. Tap the icon at the left end of the address field. If you don t see the icon, reader isn t 3

4 available for the page you re looking at. Share just the good stuff. To share just the article text and a link to it, tap while viewing the page in Reader. Return to the full page by tapping the reader icon in the address field again. Adjust the font and color of your page to make the text easier to read on the screen. Saving images from websites You are able to save images from websites directly to the Camera Roll on your ipad. While browsing a website in Safari, press and hold your finger down on an image you would like to save. Communication There are multiple ways of communicating with others using your ipad, whether you re using imessage, FaceTime, or . You must have an internet or cellular connection to use these features! imessage - imessage allows you to send unlimited text, photos, videos, locations, and contacts using Wi-Fi or cellular data from your ipad. You need a valid Apple ID to use imessage and Facetime on ipad. If you also have an iphone or Mac computer, you can set imessages to be received at any or all of these devices (under Settings). imessage can send messages to registered Apple IDs and phone numbers. FaceTime FaceTime lets you start and receive video calls, as well as audio calls, as long as you have an internet connection. Video To start a call with someone, you must add them to your Contacts first, and then initiate the call. New with ios 8 if you have an ipad and iphone connected to the same Wi-Fi network, you can answer the call from your ipad! Audio Using the Mail app to access your Flag Move Trash Reply, Reply All, Forward, Print Compose new message The Mail app is connected to your Yahoo , Gmail, etc. It isn t the exact same as going to gmail.com and viewing your from there. The mail app is an interface that syncs a certain number of days worth of s. Compose new message press and hold the Compose button and you will have quick access to any of your saved drafts you were previously working on. Change your signature Open the Settings app and tap the Mail, Contacts, Calendars option on the left side. Scroll through the page until you see the Signature option. Tap this and from this screen, you are able to individually edit your signature for all/any of the addresses you have synced to your ipad. You can have the same signature for all your accounts or change them individually (or choose not to have one at all!) 4

5 Battery saving tips - Keep the brightness on your screen lower. The brighter you have your screen, the more it will drain your battery. Adjust this manually in Settings or the Control Center. - Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirDrop if you know you re not going to be using these. Turn off/on in the Control Center or Settings. - Location Services in the Settings App, tap on Privacy, and then Location Services. Here, you can turn off GPS tracking for certain apps that you don t think need it. - Locate what apps are hogging all your battery! Go to Settings > General > Usage > Battery Usage Recommended Apps Cloud Storage upload files to these apps and access them from anywhere! Google Drive - Google Drive is one safe place for all your stuff. Upload photos, videos, documents, and other files that are important to you, then access what you need wherever you go, on any device. Get going with up to 15GB of storage. Dropbox - Dropbox lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere and share them easily. Access any file you save to your Dropbox from all your computers, iphone, ipad and even the Dropbox website! Communication / Productivity Video Chat Skype Say hello to friends and family with an instant message, voice or video call on Skype for free. There s so much you can do, right from the palm of your hand. Sign up required. Google Hangouts another tool for making video calls to people without FaceTime or an Apple ID. Can have up to 10 people participating in a hangout at one time! Must have or sign up for a Google account. Entertainment/Education itunesu - The itunes U app gives you access to complete courses from leading universities and other schools plus the world s largest digital catalog of free education content. Whether you re majoring in molecular biology at a 5

6 university, taking Spanish in high school, or just interested in European history, you now have a valuable tool to help you learn anytime, anywhere. PBS - Watch the most popular programs from PBS, including Nature, NOVA, and Masterpiece. "PBS for ipad" features thousands of full-length videos from your favorite PBS programs and local stations; new videos are added daily. NPR - Experience NPR as a delightful magazine!
