7 aurora Jazz Short User Guide Welcome to aurora Jazz, a tester for use on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) data networks. This Short User Guide contains brief information on how to set up and use your aurora Jazz. Further information is available in the main aurora Jazz User Guide. This contains comprehensive information on all aspects of aurora Jazz. It is supplied on CD as an Adobe Acrobat file, for information on how to view this file see the section below. About this Short User Guide This Short user Guide is divided into 7 sections: This Introduction, describes how to get more information on aurora Jazz and gives you a general overview of the tester and its basic operation. 10 aurora Jazz Short User Guide Safety. Safety Information When using aurora Jazz, always take basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and injury to persons. These include the following: aurora Jazz does not require any user maintenance. Do not open the back of the unit or attempt to dismantle it. Call your Agilent Technologies Distributor. Use only the batteries indicated in the main aurora Jazz User Guide. aurora Jazz has been tested and approved using the adaptor/ charger with which it is supplied. Using any alternative adaptor/charger will invalidate the approvals relating to safety and electromagnetic compatibility. Do not attempt to recharge any battery in aurora Jazz other than the rechargeable NiMH battery pack that is supplied. A non-rechargeable battery may explode. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire, as they may explode. Check with local authorities for possible special disposal instructions. Never connect two rechargeable batteries together. Do not short circuit the battery contacts. Warning: CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT Each of the optical interface modules (OC-3 STM-1 Single Mode) contains a Class 1 laser, which is active even when aurora Jazz is not connected to the network. Do not look into the interface at any time
11 Intoduction Interfaces aurora Jazz can be used on a range of ATM interfaces, using different interface modules which you can install and remove as required. Operating Modes There are three main ways in which you can use aurora Jazz on the ATM network: End-point emulation, where aurora Jazz emulates either the network or user equipment Passive monitoring, where aurora Jazz monitors traffic on the network. Except when Traffic Policing is active, aurora Jazz does not alter the traffic. Through Mode, where aurora Jazz monitors traffic, receives traffic and re-transmits it. In this mode aurora Jazz can police the traffic on the network. You must choose the operating mode before connecting to the network, by setting the Network Configuration of aurora Jazz. 12 aurora Jazz Short User Guide 2Section 1 - Getting Started This section describes how to: remove and fit an interface module remove and fit the batteries connect to the network switch on aurora Jazz adjust the screen contrast and lighting use the keypad navigate through the screens and windows select items enter and edit information Removing & Fitting an Interface Module aurora Jazz is supplied with the interface modules that your organisation has purchased. Up to two interface modules can be installed at a time. Caution If you remove or fit an interface module while aurora Jazz is switched on, aurora Jazz or the interface module may be damaged. Removing an Interface Module -1- Make sure that aurora Jazz is switched off. -2- Unscrew the fixing screw using a crosshead screwdriver. The interface modules fit into slots in the top of aurora Jazz
13 Section 1 - Getting Started -3- Insert two fingers into the interface module handle. E3 / E1 Rx Tx BNC / BNC - RJ45-4- Bracing your hand against the main unit, pull the interface module out of the slot. -5- If the slot is going to remain empty, fit a blanking plate to protect the port from damage. Fitting an Interface Module -1- Make sure that aurora Jazz is switched off. -2- Remove the blanking plate, if there is one fitted. -3- Slide the module into the slot, and push it in firmly until it clicks into place at the port. -4- Tighten the fixing screw. Using the external AC supply aurora Jazz is supplied with a power adaptor/charger and a country-specific power cable. -1- Plug the adaptor/charger into the socket labelled on aurora Jazz s connector panel. -2- Connect the other end of the power cable to a nearby power source which is easily accessible. Using Battery Power aurora Jazz is supplied with two removable, rechargeable, 3 D -cell nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. It can also be powered by six standard D - cell alkaline batteries, which can be purchased locally. Battery housings are located at the back of aurora Jazz. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 7
14 aurora Jazz Short User Guide Removing the Battery Covers -1- Slide back the battery pack release buttons. -2- Flip open the covers. -3- Gently prise the batteries out of aurora Jazz. Fitting the Rechargeable Batteries -1- Place the battery in the battery housing. The cable on the battery must be at the opposite end to the cable in the housing. -2- Connect the cable from aurora Jazz to the cable on the battery packs, making sure that the connectors are fully pressed together. -3- Firmly secure the cover, ensuring that the release buttons are engaged. Before you can fit the cover you may have to rotate the battery or re-position the cable. Fitting standard (alkaline) batteries -1- Check that the battery contacts are clean and brush away any deposits using a cloth or tissue. -2- Fit the batteries by gently sliding them into aurora Jazz, pressing against the spring first, and lower them into position. -3- Firmly secure the cover, ensuring that the release buttons are engaged
15 Section 1 - Getting Started Recharging the batteries The batteries in aurora Jazz are only charged when aurora Jazz is switched off. An indication of the current battery level is shown on the Desktop (aurora Jazz s main screen), as follows: When battery power is low an indication is displayed on the Desktop and a pop-up is displayed. We recommend that when this happens you should connect aurora Jazz to an external power supply. When battery power is too low for aurora Jazz to function the current settings are saved and aurora Jazz switches off. To recharge the batteries: -1- Switch off aurora Jazz. -2- Plug the power adaptor/charger into the socket labelled on aurora Jazz s connector panel. The LED next to the key is green. This indicates that the battery is charging. -3- Continue to charge until the LED goes out, this shows that the batteries are fully charged. -4- When charging is complete, switch off the AC supply and disconnect the adaptor/charger. 16 aurora Jazz Short User Guide A Look at the Keypad The layout of aurora Jazz s keypad is shown below. On/Off Function keys Lighting & contrast Character keys Navigation & window control Shift On/Off Function keys Lighting & contrast Character keys Navigation & window control Shift Press and hold for one second to switch aurora Jazz on or off. The main command keys, which activate functions related to the task being performed. Use these to view the screen in different lighting conditions. Used to enter numbers and letters. Used to move between items on screen, clear entries and resize windows. Used like the SHIFT key on a PC. You press SHIFT along with other keys to change their function. You can get help on individual keys by pressing F1 Help in aurora Jazz s main Desktop
17 Section 1 - Getting Started Switching aurora Jazz On & Off -1- To switch aurora Jazz on or off, press the key and hold for one second. The LED next he key is red. aurora Jazz displays the main Desktop. Changing the Screen Backlight -1- To adjust the screen backlight, press the key repeatedly to switch through the range of lighting levels that are available. Changing the Screen Contrast -1- To adjust the contrast, press the key repeatedly to switch through the range of contrast levels that are available. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 11
18 aurora Jazz Short User Guide A Look at the Desktop The Desktop is the starting point from which you access all aurora Jazz s applications. It is the first screen that appears when you switch aurora Jazz on, and is also displayed when no applications are open. Labels for physical error LEDs (may not be displayed) Applications for selection Diagram of currently selected network configuration Battery level indicator Function keys Date & time The cursor appears as a black outline surrounding one of the application icons. -1- Using the single arrow keys on aurora Jazz s keypad, move the cursor to the application you require and press ENTER to select it. aurora Jazz displays the main window for the selected application
19 Section 1 - Getting Started Moving the Cursor The cursor appears as a blue outline or button surrounding selectable options, a blue highlight when text is selected and a blue cursor line when text is being edited. To move the cursor, use the keys listed below. Next field / Scroll down Previous field / Scroll up Shift Move cursor right Move cursor left Move cursor to next group of settings on a dialog and Next tab Previous tab + Display dropdown menus Selecting Items on the Screen -1- Highlight the item and press ENTER. Using the Application Windows Each of aurora Jazz s applications has a main window, which is displayed when you select the application from the Desktop. From the main window, you can access all the functions for that application. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 13
20 aurora Jazz Short User Guide Switching between open applications -1- Press the key. aurora Jazz displays the next open application. OR -1- Press +. aurora Jazz displays a list of applications, showing the icons for all open applications plus the Desktop. As you move the cursor between the icons, the name of the application is displayed. -2- To choose the application you want to display, stop moving the cursor. Moving the active window -1- Press to display the menus. -2- Select the Window menu. -3- Choose Move Left or Move Right, as required. Using the Function Keys aurora Jazz has six function keys, labelled F1 to F6. Their functions vary according to the task that is being performed. The current function of each key is displayed at the foot of the screen, as shown below. To perform a function: -1- Press the corresponding function key
21 Section 1 - Getting Started Using the Menus aurora Jazz has menus enabling you to move windows around the screen and save or recall test results. -1- Press to display the menus. -2- Highlight the menu you want and press ENTER. -3- Highlight the menu item you want and press ENTER. OR To close the menu without making a selection, press ESC. Entering Information You can enter alphabetic, numeric or hexadecimal information using the keypad. Each of the character keys is printed with three characters. For example: M 3 N. To enter the main character (3 in the example), press the character key once. To enter the left characters on the keys (M in the example), press and release SHIFT ( ), THEN press the character keys. Each time you press a character key, the left character is entered. To enter the right character (N in the example), press SHIFT ( ) and hold it down while you press the character key. To delete the previous character, press CLR. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 15
22 aurora Jazz Short User Guide Cancelling, Clearing or Accepting Entries When you have changed information in an entry box, you can use the following keys to cancel, clear or save the changes: Cancel an edit or selection without saving Clear the field ESC or display the Window menu and choose Close CLR Accept and implement an edit or selection
23 Section 2 - Configuration & Connection 3Section 2 - Configuration & Connection This section explains how to configure aurora Jazz for testing. There are an number of things you must do before you can start testing: ore you can start testing you must:: fit the correct interface module page 7 switch on aurora Jazz page 11 choose the network configuration page 18 choose the interface configuration page 19 connect aurora Jazz to the network page 20 For information on how to fit an interface module see Removing & Fitting an Interface Module on page 6. For information on how to switch on aurora Jazz see Switching aurorajazz On & Off on page 11. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 17
24 aurora Jazz Short User Guide Choosing the Network Configuration (Operating Mode) You need to select the way in which aurora Jazz will be connected to the network. This setting affects the operation of the receiver and transmitter, and determines which tests you can perform. End-point Emulation enables you to replace a piece of equipment and so test if there is a fault in that piece of equipment. Passive Monitor enables you to monitor alarms and errors on a link, monitor bandwidth use, and perform a receive BERT. Through Mode: Single enables you to monitor alarms and errors on a link, monitor bandwidth use, perform a receive BERT and to police traffic. Through Mode: Dual enables you to monitor alarms and errors on a link, monitor bandwidth use, perform a receive BERT and to police traffic on one interface. Note Only End-point Emulation mode allows control of transmitted data. The other modes are receive only. -1- From the Desktop, select Network Config ( ). aurora Jazz displays the Network Config window, which lists the available network configuration modes. As you highlight each option, a diagram in the lower half of the window shows aurora Jazz connected to the network and operating in the highlighted mode. -2- Select the network configuration that you require. aurora Jazz opens an interface port selection window. -3- Press ENTER. The Select Interface dialog is displayed
25 Section 2 - Configuration & Connection -4- Select the interface port you want to use. The selection window closes. The network configuration and interface port that you have selected are displayed on the right-hand side of the Desktop. -5- Choose whether you want to emulate a UNI (User to Network Interface) or NNI (Network to Network Interface). -6- To display the interface configuration screen, press F1 Config. OR... To save your selections and close the Network Config window, press F6 Exit. Configuring the Interface Port Before you can start to test the network you must set specific controls for the operation of the physical network interface. The settings available are different for the different interface modules that can be fitted to aurora Jazz. -1- Close all active applications, and disconnect aurora Jazz from the network. -2- From the Desktop, select Port Config ( ). aurora Jazz displays the Physical Port Configuration screen for the interface on the currently selected port. -3- To select a different interface, press F1 Port to display the Select Interface dialog. Select a port (A or B) and interface. -4- To display a summary of the interface configuration, select the Summary tab. For a printout, press F5 Print. -5- To configure the interface, select the Physical tab and choose the option you want to set for each setting. -6- If you are configuring the DS1 interface, select the Attenuation tab and choose a value for line attenuation or build-out. 26 aurora Jazz Short User Guide -7- When you have finished configuring the interface, you can open one of the physical applications (press F2 Alarms or F3 Physical BERT. -8- To save the configuration and close the Physical Port Configuration window, press F6 Exit. -9- To check that the interface configuration matches the network, you can look at the Physical Alarms display. Any alarms being received are displayed. Connecting to the ATM Network aurora Jazz s connector ports are located along the top of the tester. In the illustration below, an E1/E3 interface module and an OC-3/STM-1 Multimode/ cat5 interface module are installed.] Serial Port Trigger Connector External Clock Connector Power Connector Ethernet Port Interface Module B Interface Module A -1- Plug the appropriate connector cable(s) into aurora Jazz. The type of connector and cable depend on the interface you are using. -2- Connect the other end of the cable to the network or the equipment to be tested. An illustration of aurora Jazz connected to the network for the selected network configuration is shown at the right of the Desktop
27 Section 2 - Configuration & Connection Connecting for Network Emulation When using an interface with an RJ45 connection (E1 and OC-3/STM-1 CATS), you should be aware of that the RJ45 connector contains both receive and transmit signals: these are presented differently at either end of the cable connection. You can switch the E1 interface module to either NT (Network Termination) on TE (Terminal Equipment) from the Physical Port Configuration window. The OC-3/STM-1 CATS interface is used as an NT. If connection as a TE is required, a crossover cable must be used. For details of the cables that are used with aurora Jazz. Setting Up a Loopback If you are performing a BERT you may want to use aurora Jazz to both transmit the test pattern and to test the pattern as it is received. To do this you must set up a loopback. To set up a loopback, you must put a loop in the network, either by physically connecting the cable back on itself or by using the network management control to provide a loop within the network equipment. 28 aurora Jazz Short User Guide 4Section 3 - Physical Testing This section explains how to test the physical layer and how to change the way aurora Jazz displays physical alarms. For detailed information on the meaning of the physical alarms, see the main aurora Jazz User Guide. Physical Error Reporting aurora Jazz can display an LED-type indication of framing alarms and counts of active alarms. This enables you to check that the physical framing is operating correctly and that equipment is correctly configured. When aurora Jazz is operating in End point Emulation you can also inject errors into the data to check that the network is correctly monitoring the alarms. -1- From the Desktop, select Physical Alarms ( ). The alarm window opens. For each alarm there is a counter and an indicator that shows green when no error of this type has been detected, orange for a past error and red for a current error
29 Section 3 - Physical Testing In End-point-Emulation mode, you can inject errors into the data: -2- Choose Inject for continuous errors of the indicated type. -3- To stop injecting errors, choose Inject again. -4- To clear the error record, press F3 Reset. -5- For quick access to the interface configuration screens you can press F2 Config. -6- To close the Physical Alarm window, press F6 Exit. 30 aurora Jazz Short User Guide Setting up How Physical Alarms are Displayed You can assign each of the eight LEDs along the top edge of aurora Jazz to a specific physical error. -1- From the Desktop, press. The Tools menu is displayed. -2- Choose Assign Alarms. The alarms currently assigned are displayed below each of the eight LEDs. -3- Move the cursor to the first LED you want to assign an alarm to. -4- Press ENTER. A list of alarms for the current interface module or modules is displayed. Only alarms appropriate for the interface module or modules fitted are displayed. The alarms for the second interface are only displayed if you aurora Jazz s Network Configuration is set to Through Mode: Dual or Passive Monitor mode. -5- Choose the interface and type of alarm you want to assign to the first LED. -6- Press ENTER to save the setting. -7- To assign an alarm to the another LED move the cursor to the appropriate LED. -8- Repeats steps 4 to When you have assigned all the alarms you want to, press F6 Exit. The alarms you have assigned are displayed below their respective LEDs
31 Section 4 - ATM Testing 5Section 4 - ATM Testing This section explains how to test the ATM layer. Traffic Generation To generate ATM cellstreams, aurora Jazz must be operating in End-point Emulation mode. -1- From the Desktop, select ATM Tx ( ). The Tx Traffic Summary opens, listing the stored cellstream profiles. An icon indicates whether aurora Jazz is currently transmitting. A Status indicator shows green for active profiles and red for inactive profiles. If you change a profile setup M (modified) is displayed next to the profile until you press F1 Apply. To resize the window, press F4 Maximize or Restore. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 25
32 aurora Jazz Short User Guide -2- To define a profile, press F2 New. Define the cellstream settings in each tab, then press F1 OK. -3- To edit a profile, highlight it and press F3 Edit, change the settings, and press F1 OK. The new settings appear in the summary and will take effect immediately. -4- To delete a profile, highlight it, press F5 More..., then F2 Delete Profile. The profile is deleted without further warning. -5- To start or stop transmitting a profile, highlight it and press ENTER. A check mark ( ) meaning start transmission, or a cross (x), meaning stop transmission, appears under Status. The changes will take effect when you next press F1 Apply. -6- Press F1 Apply to apply all changes. -7- To close the Tx Traffic Summary, press F6 Exit
33 Section 4 - ATM Testing Scanning Receive Traffic aurora Jazz maintains a list of the cellstreams that it is receiving. This enables you to see an overall picture of traffic on the network. -1- From the Desktop, select ATM Rx ( ). The Rx Virtual Circuit window opens, listing the receive virtual circuits and showing summary information for each one: Circuit - the virtual path and circuit numbers. The LED next to the circuit indicates the occurrence of ATM layer alarms. Red indicates a current alarm, orange means a past alarm and green means that no alarms have been detected. Average - a count of cells received per second. Peak - the highest cell count per second that has occurred on the virtual circuit since aurora Jazz began receiving traffic or the list was regenerated. Total Cells - the accumulated cell count for the virtual circuit since aurora Jazz began receiving traffic or the list was regenerated. CLP=0 and CLP=1 - a breakdown of the Total Cells count, showing the number of cells received on the circuit with each type of CLP value. At the foot of the screen, aurora Jazz shows the number of circuits that are active (Circuits), the maximum data rate in cell/second for the interface you are using (Maximum) and the sum of the averages for all the active circuits (Average). -2- To change the list order, press F2 Sort, then press the function key for the sort order you want. -3- To regenerate the list, press F3 Reset. 34 aurora Jazz Short User Guide -4- To show more details for a specific virtual circuit, highlight it on the list, press F5 Cell Stream aurora Jazz displays the bandwidth profile, alarms and a graph showing the cell rate per second on the circuit. -5- To perform further tests on one of the virtual circuits, highlight it and press F1 Analysis, then press the function key for the test you want. -6- To close the Rx Virtual Circuit screen, press F6 Exit
35 Section 4 - ATM Testing Traffic Policing Traffic Policing enables you to check that a user is complying with the allowed data rate. When aurora Jazz is operating in Through mode, you can enforce policing by tagging or discarding excess cells. Policing can be applied to only one cellstream at a time. This can be used to demonstrate whether or not a user is complying with the traffic contract. Alternatively, you can use Traffic Policing to prove different settings for the UPC (Usage Parameter Control algorithm) before they are programmed into network equipment: for example, when solving congestion problems. -1- Select the Network Configuration you require. If you want to forward policed cells to the network, you must choose Through Mode. -2- From the Desktop, select Policer ( ). -3- In the Select a Virtual Circuit selection window, highlight the circuit you want to test and press ENTER or F1 OK. -4- To configure Traffic Policing on the circuit, set the traffic type, the GCRA parameters and (Through Mode only) the action to be taken with excess cells. -5- Press F1 Start to begin policing on the circuit. During Traffic Policing, aurora Jazz displays counts of conforming cells and excess cells. The indicator shows green when the traffic is complying with the network contract, and red when excess cells are present. If the indicator shows orange the traffic complies with the network contract at present but in the past excess cells have been present. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 29

37 Section 4 - ATM Testing ATM BERT ATM Bit Error Rate Testing (ATM BERT) can be used to test the quality of a connection. Data errors and cell loss are indicated by error counts. -1- Set up the Network Configuration as you want it. If aurora Jazz is to be the source of the BERT pattern, it must be operating in End-point Emulation mode. -2- From the Desktop, select ATM BERT ( ). -3- In the virtual circuit selection window, highlight the circuit you want to test and press ENTER or F1 OK. -4- Select the Config tab and configure the test as follows: Select a pseudo-random bit series, then choose whether the pattern is to be inverted If aurora Jazz is to test the pattern, set a test duration and the pass/fail criteria, if required. Note If a PRBS cellstream is being transmitted by aurora Jazz it will use this for the test pattern. If the virtual circuit you are transmitting on is the same as the virtual circuit you have chosen to test =RxVCC is displayed. If the virtual circuit you are transmitting on is not the same as the virtual circuit you have chosen to test Rx not VCC is displayed. If no PRBS cellstream is being transmitted aurora Jazz will not transmit any pattern and will test the pattern it receives. -5- Press F1 Start. When synchronisation is achieved aurora Jazz starts collecting test data. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 31

To inject one error, choose Single. For continuous errors, choose an error rate and select Inject. To stop continuous injection, clear the Inject check box. -7- To end a continuous test or stop a timed test before the duration has elapsed, press F1 Stop. -8- To select a different virtual circuit for testing, press F5 Circuit to display the selection list, highlight the circuit you want to test and press F1 OK. -9- To close the ATM BERT application, press F6 Exit
39 Section 4 - ATM Testing OAM Testing The OAM application enables you to control OAM type cells on any cellstream. You can enable Continuity Check cells, inject ATM layer alarms and use Loopback cells to measure round trip delay. -1- From the Desktop, select OAM ( ). -2- To reset the Total OAM Cells and Errored OAM Cells count, press F3 Reset. -3- In the virtual circuit selection window, highlight the circuit you want to test and press ENTER or F1 OK. The OAM Global Summary screen is displayed. -4- Select the tab for the type of analysis you require. You can display summary information (Summary), activate continuity checking (CC), inject AIS or RDI for fault management (FM), set up a loopback (LB) or activate performance monitoring (PM). -5- To send OAM Continuity Check cells: Choose the CC tab. Choose Activate. aurora Jazz sends one OAM Continuity Check cell every second. If the equipment at the other end of the circuit you are testing responds Activated is displayed. To stop sending OAM Continuity Check cells, choose Deactivate. If the equipment at the other end of the circuit you are testing responds Deactivated is displayed. -6- To send AIS or RDI errors: Choose the FM tab. Choose Inject AIS or Inject RDI. aurora Jazz sends one AIS or RDI error every second. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 33

Choose Loopback. aurora Jazz sends one loopback request every second. Activation Request Sent is displayed and if the equipment at the other end of the circuit you are testing responds Activation Confirmation received is displayed. To stop sending loopback requests, choose Loopback again. -9- To send a Performance Management request: Choose the PM tab. Choose Activate. aurora Jazz sends a Performance Management request. If the equipment at the other end of the circuit you are testing responds Activation Confirmation received is displayed. Note aurora Jazz does not support Performance Management cell transmission or monitoring To test a different virtual circuit, press F5 Circuit, highlight the circuit you require and press F1 OK To end OAM analysis, press F6 Exit
41 IP Ping Testing 6IP Ping Testing IP Ping enables you to send a Ping to test for the presence of a device on the network. -1- From the Desktop, select Ping ( ). The IP Ping and Select a Virtual Circuit dialog is displayed. -2- In the virtual circuit selection window, highlight the circuit you want to test and press ENTER or F1 OK. -3- Choose the Ping Tx or Ping Rx tab. -4- Set the Source IP and Destination IP. To move between the parts of the IP addresses, press or. -5- Set the Pass/Fail Criteria: RTD - Round Trip Delay, the time for the Ping to reach the destination, be processed and return to aurora Jazz. Any Error - The test fails if any error is found. -6- Set the Control settings: Tx Count - the number of Pings you want to send, or choose Continuous to send Pings continuously Timeout - the time aurora Jazz waits for a response to the Ping before sending another Ping -7- Press F1 Start to send the Ping message. -8- To test on a different virtual circuit, press F5 Circuit, highlight a circuit and press F1 OK. -9- To close the IP Ping window, press F6 Exit. 42 aurora Jazz Short User Guide 7Section 5 - Storing & Reviewing Test Results You can store one set of results for each of the following: Physical BERT ATM BERT Ping Physical alarms You can recall and view the results on screen, or print them via the serial port either direct to a printer or to a terminal emulation program running on a PC. Saving a Set of Results To save the current set of results (this overwrites any results that are currently stored): -1- In the test window, display the Results menu and select Save aurora Jazz displays the stored results. -2- To close the results display, press F6 Exit. Recalling, Viewing & Printing Stored Results -1- In the main window for the test, display the Results menu and select Open. OR... From the Desktop, select Results to display the File Browser, then select the test type. OR... Press F1 Open in any Results window to display the File Browser, then select the test type. aurora Jazz displays the stored results

44 aurora Jazz Short User Guide 8Section 6 - Tutorial As an example of how aurora Jazz may be used for ATM testing, this chapter takes you through the procedure for an ATM Bit Error Rate Test (ATM BERT) on the OC-3/STM-1 interface. These detailed, step by step instructions will enable you to see an overview of aurora Jazz in operation. Before you Start the Test There are an number of things you must do before you can start testing. The following pages explain how to configure aurora Jazz for testing. Before you can start to test you must: fit the correct interface module page 39 switch on aurora Jazz page 40 choose the network configuration page 41 choose the interface configuration page 42 connect a loop page
45 Section 6 - Tutorial Fitting a Interface Module to aurora Jazz If a OC-3/STM-1 interface module is not fitted to aurora Jazz you must remove an interface module or blanking plate and fit the OC-3/STM-1 interface module. If the OC-3/STM-1 interface module is already fitted to aurora Jazz you do not need to perform this procedure. -1- Make sure that aurora Jazz is switched off. -2- Unscrew the fixing screw in the interface module using a crosshead screwdriver. The interface modules fit into slots in the top of aurora Jazz. -3- Insert two fingers into the interface module handle. -4- Bracing your hand against the main unit, pull the interface module out of the slot. -5- Fit the OC-3/STM-1 interface module into the slot, and push it in firmly until it clicks into place at the port. -6- Tighten the fixing screw using a crosshead screwdriver. Connecting a Loop Now you must connect the loop cable to aurora Jazz : -1- Plug one end of an optical cable to the Tx connection on aurora Jazz. Starting to Transmit Cells Now you are going to set up aurora Jazz to transmit a cell stream, first you must define the cell stream: -1- From the Desktop, select ATM Tx ( ). The Tx Summary window is displayed
51 Section 6 - Tutorial -2- Press F2 New Profile. The ATM Tx Profile dialog is displayed. -3- Enter a Profile name using the keypad. To enter the main character (for example 3), press the character key once. To enter the left characters on the keys (M in the example), press and release SHIFT ( ), THEN press the character keys. Each time you press a character key, the left character is entered. To enter the right character (N in the example), press SHIFT ( ) and hold it down while you press the character key. To delete the previous character, press CLR. -4- Press to display the Payload tab. -5- Use and to choose PRBS Payload, then press press ENTER. A new PRBS section of the dialog is displayed. -6- Use and to choose a PRBS type 2^20 payload, then press ENTER. -7- Press F1 OK to save the profile and exit. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 45

53 Section 6 - Tutorial Starting the ATM BERT Set the Pass/Fail Criteria to ES (errored seconds) and enter a value of 10. aurora Jazz is the source of the pattern and the pattern will be received on the same virtual channel as it is transmitted on, so Tx to Rx: VP/VC is displayed. aurora Jazz is also testing the pattern so set the test Pattern to 2^ Press F1 Start. When synchronisation is achieved aurora Jazz will start to log results. The following information is displayed as the test proceeds: Sync Elapsed Time Rx Bits Rx errors BER ES Shows: green - synchronisation has been achieved red - synchronisation has been lost yellow - synchronisation has been achieved at the moment but has been lost during the test. The time the test has been running and synchronisation has been achieved. The number of bits received. The number of errored bits received. The bit error rate. The number of errored seconds. That is the number of seconds during which at least one error was received. Issue A DRAFT - 06/00 47

When a severely errored second is received a counter is started. If 10 successive consecutive severely errored seconds are counted they are regarded as unavailable seconds. The counter is stopped when the error rate falls below 10-3 and the number of unavailable seconds is displayed. When the test has finished the results are displayed. During a test, when aurora Jazz is the source of the pattern, you can inject errors into the data. Select the Error Injection tab. To inject one error, choose Single.
