1 Using OBS Studio for Screen Capture The OBS Studio program is one of the best open source programs for screen and video capture. This program has version for Window, Mac and Linux and is very powerful. It can capture screens and video and has support for hardwareassisted video capture using the Nvidia graphics GPU. Installing and Configuring OBS 1. Go to the site 2. Download the setup program for your operating system. 3. After downloading run the install program to install the software. 4. Run the autoconfig wizard and choose either Streaming or Recording. 5. Choose defaults on the remaining settings. You see the default window: In the lower left corner are the areas for capture sources and capture scenes. In the middle of the screen is the capture area and below that is the Mixer area that shows recording and audio levels. If OBS is recognizing your microphone you will see the green Mic/Aux bar change.

2 Using OBS To capture a screen cast you first select a Source, choose an output format, and then start recording. If you have two monitors you can record on only one monitor and you can add a webcam overlay. 1. In the Sources area click the Plus button to add a source: 2. Choose what you wish to capture from the popup box. If you wish to capture the screen choose Display Capture:

3 3. You see a dialog box to create a new Display Capture device. Click OK to accept.

4 4. You see the current screen (containing the OBS program) captured.

5 5. If you have two monitors click the Display drop-down and choose which display to capture. If you wish to also capture the mouse cursor click the Capture Cursor option. 6. You now see the second screen being captured.

6 7. Click the OK button on the capture window properties to set the capture source. To add your web cam you need to select a second source.

7 8. Click the Plus button under sources and choose video capture device: 9. Click OK to create a new source.

8 10. You should see your web cam video. Click OK to accept. You now see your web cam video overlayed on the screen capture. 11. Drag and resize the web cam video so it fits your screen. You will next set the output format. 12. Click the file menu and choose Settings.

9 13. Click the output tab on the settings menu and set the recording format to mp4.

10 14. To change the audio input source click the Audio tab and choose the Mic option to choose your desired input device. You may have to specifically choose an audio input device (microphone). 15. Click OK when done. 16. When ready to record click the start recording button in the lower right corner of the screen and start recording. Your screen actions and your voice will be recorded. The button changes to Stop Recording. 17. When done recording click the Stop Recording button. 18. To locate your recordings click the File menu and choose Show Recordings. It shows you where the records are stored.

11 Using a Single Screen If you are using a single screen you must make an additional setting change. You want to setup the OBS capture features and the start/stop recording from the keyboard. 1. Before recording, click the File menu and choose Settings. 2. Click the Hotkeys tab and click in the Start/Stop recording boxes. 3. Click in the Start Recording text box. 4. Press the keys you wish to use to stop and start recording. For example (Ctrl+Shift+R). This key combination will show up and is automatically set as a toggle. That is, pressing these keys once turns on recording and pressing them again turns off recording. 5. Click in the Stop Recording text box and enter the same key sequence. This will serve as a toggle. OBS will remember your recording settings and, when started, will use the last settings you entered. If you wish OBS to start minimized you can set this in the General options.

12 6. Click the General tab and choose Minimize to system tray when started. Now, when OBS is started it will appear on the system tray can be used to record with the Ctrl+Shift+R hotkeys (or whatever keys you selected). 7. To exit the OBS program you would right click the icon on the system tray: and choose Exit.

13 Changing Capture Options By default, OBS will capture video in the native screen resolution. If you wish to reduce the screen capture dimensions you can change the Video options. This will result in smaller videos in both file size and screen size. 1. Before recording, click File and choose Settings. 2. Click the Video option tab and choose your Output resolution from the drop-down menu. The aspect ratios will be set to your base capture resolution but will be scaled down correctly. 3. Click OK when done to use this resolution.
