1 Configuration of a Mac PC for Notation Software Products with Wine Useful information: The concept of Notation Software for Mac PCs is based on Wine. Wine is an open source software package to adapt Windows programs to multiple operating systems. Wine is for free. We at Notation Software use the Wine software package from Mike Kronenberg ( This software package is specially tailored for Mac PCs. A video for this installation sequence is available here. 1. Download Wine Download the latest certified Wine image from using the Safari browser. The downloaded file comes with the latest version number of Wine like Wine_2.0.dmg. The file will be saved in Users/[Name]/Downloads/Wine_x.dmg where x is the latest Wine version. 2. Install the Wine Image Double-Click on Wine_x.dmg. The yellow window below will open. Drag drop Wine.app into the Applications folder as in the following screen shot 1

2 3. Set the Wine.app to start at start-up of the Mac and when the user logs in System Settings / Users and Groups 2

3 4. Start Wine Dependent on the Mac operating system version Wine.app may be blocked because Wine.app is downloaded from the internet and not from the Mac App Store. You may receive a message like this: 3

5 5. Configuration of Wine After the start of Wine (or when the PC starts-up or you log in) you will see a Wine glass at the top window bar. Click on it to see the drop-down menu. Click on Configuration. Because the default setting of Wine is Windows XP, we recommend changing it to Windows 10. 5

6 6. Installation of notation composer 3 (or musician or player) Notation Software is typically downloaded on a Mac through the Safari browser. (for musician/player 3 all is equivalent, just replace Composer with Musician or Player. ) 6

7 IMPORTANT when installing Composer / Musician /Player Please do NOT change the default program installation folder. The software uses exactly this path when opening the program. If during installation a Repair/Remove window may pop up e.g. for de-installing a former version or a trial version, please always use Remove, never use Repair 7

7. Complete the installation To complete the installation please download the corresponding dmg installation file for Composer.app from here ( https://www.notation.com/composer.dmg ) for Musician.

The Safari browser will save the files in the Downloads folder. 8. Install the Composer, Musician or Player app from the dmg file and start the app the first time Please double-click the dmg-file. The icon of the dmg-file will appear on the desktop. Drag drop the app (here Composer.app) into the Applications folder as shown in the screen shot below. The Composer.app in our example will appear now in the Applications folder. You can then move the icon to the desktop and/or associate.not or.mid files in the Finder etc. IMPORTANT: Start the Composer.app or Musician.app or Player.app now. 8

The very first Start of the Composer, Musician or Player app When starting Composer.app, Musician.app or Player.app the very first time you may encounter a message that the app is blocked by the operating system because it is downloaded from the internet and not from the Mac App Store. 10 10. Save an external backup of the software During installation of the software an automatic backup is created in a zip folder. This zip folder is located in the Downloads folder and also the folder where the installation was started. In addition you can find the backup in the product s installation folder (see Appendix A5). Please save this zip backup on an external device or simply use the Time Machine feature for the backup. For a re-installation please follow the guidance as described in the file Read_me_to_reinstall_Notation.txt For a re-installation please start with step 6 of this installation guide. 10

11 Appendix: Useful information about the use of Notation Software on a Mac A1. Uninstalling the software manually The un-installation on Wine goes like this: Please use the Wine Control Panel to uninstall the former version as shown below. After you click Add/Remove Software the window below pops up. Notation Composer is used in the following example screenshots, but the same steps are true for Notation Musician or Notation Player. 11
