1 This chapter describes how you purchase PPV programs in Passport DCT. This chapter includes the following sections: About PPV Enabling or Disabling the PIN For Purchasing Purchasing Future PPV Programs From the Program Guide Purchasing Programs From PPV Channels Reviewing and Canceling PPV Purchases About PPV Passport DCT allows you to purchase up to eight PPV programs directly from your set-top box. For each PPV program, the cable provider determines the specifics of the offer, such as the price, the buying window of opportunity, whether there is a free preview, and whether you can cancel a purchase. You can purchase PPV programs from dedicated PPV channels or the program guide. You can purchase PPV programs in advance, or, in certain circumstances, after the program has started. Additionally, you can set your VCR to record any PPV program. You can restrict which household members can purchase PPV programs by requiring the personal identification number (PIN). Note: In some cases, a telephone number may display for ordering a particular program rather than button options. In this case, call the number to order your PPV program. 2 ... Enabling or Disabling the PIN For Purchasing Parental control allows you to require the PIN for purchasing to help you prevent unauthorized household members from purchasing PPV programs. When the PIN is required for purchasing, a PIN entry message displays when you attempt to purchase a PPV program. You can only continue the purchase if you know the PIN number. The display below shows the PIN entry message: You can require the PIN for purchasing with the Parental Control preference in the Settings menu. If you do not require the PIN, anyone can purchase PPV programs. For procedures to require a PIN for purchasing, refer to Requiring the PIN for Purchasing on page 140. It is advisable to change your PIN from time to time to avoid unauthorized viewers uncovering your PIN number. For information about changing the PIN, refer to Changing the PIN on page 141. Purchasing Future PPV Programs From the Program Guide You can use the program guide to purchase PPV programs. The procedure below describes how you do this. You may need to know your PIN and have purchase credit available to be able to purchase programs. A purchased PPV program shows in yellow in the program guide grid and the type of timer symbol you have selected displays, and when selected, its description shows the following symbol to indicate the purchase. Event Timer VCR Timer To view all of your PPV purchases, use the Settings menu. For information, refer to Reviewing and Canceling PPV Purchases on page Passport DCT Customer Service Guide

3 ... Purchasing Future PPV Programs From the Program Guide... To purchase a future PPV programs from the program guide 1 Press the GUIDE button. The program guide displays with the current programming in the time grid. 2 Press the arrow buttons to highlight the future PPV program you want to purchase. (PPV programs available for purchase display in green.) Note: Another method to review PPV programming would be to access the guide by the theme view (press the B button and go to the PPV movies category and view all the movie offerings in chronological order. 3 Press the SELECT button and the following display appears. It provides additional information on the program. Press the B button to purchase the program. Passport DCT Customer Service Guide 145

4 ... Note: The following screens indicate that you have selected a Pay-Per-View program. For information on a current purchase, refer to Purchasing Programs From PPV Channels on page You see the following display asking you to select one of the options. Using the scroll bars, highlight either Buy Event or Buy Event and Set VCR Timer and press the A button. Proceed to the next step. 5 If you have exceeded the maximum number of purchases, you see this display. If you do not see this display, proceed to the next step. If you do see this display, you must either review your previous purchases and cancel one of them, or wait until one has finished and then start this purchase over. Either press the A button to review the purchases or press the C button to cancel the new purchase. If you review the purchases and cancel a purchase in order to complete this purchase, you will need to start the procedure again. If you elect to cancel, this procedure is now complete. 6 If the program you have selected exceeds six hours, you see a display telling you this. 5 ... Purchasing Future PPV Programs From the Program Guide... 7 If there is a timer overlap, you see the following display. If you do not see this display, proceed to the next step. If you do see this display, you may wish to resolve the timer overlap before proceeding. - Use the up and down arrow buttons to highlight each overlapping timer (program). Then use your right and left arrow buttons to change a status. - Press the B button to accept your changes. - If overlaps still exist, you see the display on your right. To continue on and let Passport DCT resolve the overlap, press the A button. To return to the previous display, press the C button. Note: For additional information on changing a timer status, refer to the section Resolving a Timer Overlap on page If you have set up parental control or have set up Passport DCT to require a PIN for purchases, or both, the display on the right appears. If you do not see this display, proceed to the next step. If you do see this display and if you know the PIN, you may proceed; press the A button to continue on. Enter the 4-digit PIN and continue on. If you do not know the PIN, press the C button and the procedure ends (the purchase is canceled). Passport DCT Customer Service Guide 147

6 ... 9 The program guide displays, showing the PPV program in yellow with timer symbol. This indicates you have purchased the program. A minute before the program, you are notified that the program is about to start. Note: If you have set a VCR timer, make sure that there is a recordable tape in your VCR and it is turned on. Purchasing Programs From PPV Channels Cable companies provide designated PPV channels where you can buy PPV programs. PPV channels show announcements and teasers for the channel s PPV programs. The procedure below describes how you purchase a program directly from PPV channels. To purchase from PPV channels 1 Select the PPV channel offering the program you want to purchase. You can do this via the program guide or by browsing through the channels. 2 You may see a message informing you that the PPV channel is locked by parental control. If you do not see this message, proceed to the next step. If you see this message, first press the SELECT button to turn off locking and at the next display, enter your 4-digit PIN number. 7 ... Purchasing Programs From PPV Channels... 3 You see either of the following displays: The display provides information and offers options for Purchase Review or Buy. The display tells you that a preview is showing for this PPV program. Go to the next step. 4 To purchase the event, press the B button. You see the following display. 5 Using the up and down arrow buttons, select either Buy Event or Buy Event and Set a VCR Timer. Press the A button. Note: If you do not set a VCR timer, there is no way to add it later. It is recommended that you do an impulse recording to record the program in this case. Passport DCT Customer Service Guide 149

8 ... 6 If you have exceeded the number of timers (eight) for PPV, you see the following display: If you do not see this display, go to the next step. If you do see this display, either review the previous purchases and cancel one of them or wait until a timer is finished and then start your purchase over again. Press either the A button to review the purchase or press the C button to cancel this purchase. For additional information, refer to Exceeding the Maximum Number of Timers on page If there is an overlap with another timer, you are given the opportunity to resolve the overlap. If you do not see this display, proceed to the next step. If you do see this display, you have the choice of suspending or canceling (clearing) existing timers or you can let Passport DCT resolve the overlap. Once you have made all the changes you desire, press the A button to accept the changes. For additional information on these options, refer to Resolving a Timer Overlap on page 47. Proceed to the next step. 8 You see a request to enter your PIN number If you do not see this display, go to the next step. If you see this display, use the number buttons on the remote to enter your 4-digit PIN number. 150 Passport DCT Customer Service Guide

9 ... Reviewing and Canceling PPV Purchases... 9 If you set a VCR timer, you see a display confirming the VCR timer. Press the A button to accept the message. Be sure that you have a recordable tape in your VCR and the recorder is turned on. For more information on VCR Timers, refer to Setting VCR Timers on page One of the following happens: If the program has not yet started, a message displays thanking you for your order. If the program has started, the set-top box automatically displays the PPV program. Reviewing and Canceling PPV Purchases When you purchase PPV programs from the program guide or PPV channels, you can view or cancel PPV purchases with the Purchase Review preference in the Settings menu or the program guide. PPV purchases can only be canceled as long as they are within the cancel window specified by the cable company. For information about purchasing PPV programs, refer to Purchasing PPV Programs, page 143. You can also use the Timer Review preference in the Settings menu to review and cancel PPV purchases. This preference does not show past purchases, only pending. For information, refer to Reviewing, Modifying, and Canceling Timers, page 79. Reviewing/Canceling Purchases From the Settings Menu When you purchase PPV programs from the program guide or PPV channels, you can use the Purchase Review preference to review pending and past purchases and to cancel pending purchases (as long as they are within the cancel window). The procedure below describes how you do this. To review or cancel PPV purchases 1 Press the MENU button. The Settings menu displays. 2 Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the Purchase Review preference. The number of pending and past purchases displays. 3 Press the right arrow button to move to the Summary column. A list of timers displays. 4 Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the purchase you wish to cancel. 152 Passport DCT Customer Service Guide

11 ... Reviewing and Canceling PPV Purchases... 5 Press the SELECT button to cancel the purchase. One of the following occurs: If this is a program that can be canceled, you see the following message. Go to the next step. If this is a program that can no longer be canceled, you see a message indicating this. Press the A button and go to step 8. 6 Press the A button to cancel the timer and the purchase disappears from the Summary column. 7 When you are done, press the left arrow button. You return to the Preference column. 8 To cancel additional purchases, return to step 4. 9 To exit the Settings menu, press the EXIT button. Canceling PPV Purchases From the Program Guide You can use the program guide to cancel PPV purchases as long as they are within the cancel window defined by the cable company. The procedure below shows how you do this. To cancel PPV purchases from the program guide 1 Press the GUIDE button. The program guide displays. 2 Press the arrow buttons to select the purchased PPV program you want to cancel. A purchased program displays in yellow with a timer symbol. 12 ... 3 Press the SELECT button and the following display appears. Use the scroll buttons to highlight the Cancel Purchase option. Note: If the set-top box displays the channel instead of this message, you selected a purchase for a PPV program that is currently playing. You may still be able to cancel the purchase, but you can only do so with the Purchase Review preference in the Settings menu as described in Reviewing/Canceling Purchases From the Settings Menu, page Press the A button to accept your entry and cancel the purchase. The program guide displays, no longer showing the program in yellow. 5 Press the EXIT button to exit the program guide and return to the currently selected channel. Adding a VCR Timer to a Purchase If you did not add a VCR timer when you made the purchase, you can add one to a future purchase. If the purchase is current, you cannot add a VCR timer. You can however, manually (impulse recording) record the program. For additional information, refer to Starting Your VCR on Impulse on page 174. To add a VCR timer to a future purchase 1 Press the GUIDE button. The program guide displays with the current programming in the time grid. 2 Press the arrow buttons to highlight the future PPV program you desire to change. (The purchased PPV programs displays in yellow with the event timer symbol.) 154 Passport DCT Customer Service Guide

Adding a VCR Timer to a Purchase... 3 Press the SELECT button and the following display appears. 4 Use your down arrow button to select the Add VCR Timer to Purchase option and press the A button to accept the change. 5 You see one of the following displays. Note: (Note: if the program exceeds 6 hours, you will first see an alert informing you of this.) Read and follow the message and then press the A button to accept the message and continue. 6 The program guide now displays the selected program in yellow with a VCR timer symbol. 7 To exit the program guide, press the EXIT button.
