1 Technical Bulletin: #TB Revision B Product Affected: Network Video Recorder (NVR) Server Software ( ), Vx Client Software (8.3.2), Cx Alert Console Software (2.3.2) Description: Implement improved Daylight Savings Time (DST) solution for playback of overlap recorded video Date of Issuance: 21 Ocber 2008 Purpose This technical bulletin #TB addresses an issue recently discovered in the NVR Server Software and in the Vx Client and Cx Alert Console Software regarding the inability playback overlap video which occurs when one hour of video is recorded twice during the Daylight Saving Time change. The primary sympms are: When the NVR is set a time zone that recognizes Daylight Savings, it will record one hour of video twice but is unable play back the original one hour prior the Daylight Savings from the web browser interface. When the Vx Client is searching for video on the NVR, it is unable play back the original one hour prior the Daylight Savings from the application. If the Cx Alert Console captures any NVR alerts during the original one hour overlap period, when it attempts play back the alert recorded video, it will retrieve video from the duplicate one hour of recording. Permanent Solution To correct these issues, it will be necessary update the NVR Software with the DST software patch (reflash NVR firmware) as well as reinstall the American Dynamics Vx Client and/or Cx Alert Console Software that includes the updated DST fix. The details complete the upgrading are detailed in the rest of this technical bulletin. 1

2 Instructions Request Download Access Cusmers whose products are IN WARRANTY or have a VALID SOFTWARE SUPPORT AGREEMENT (SSA) with can receive the DST update for free. Contact VEupgrade@TycoInt.com request access download the firmware from the MoveIT Server. Using a client PC with an active Internet connection, send the following information VEupgrade@TycoInt.com using your company Include all software product names and current version numbers Include all software license file(s) as PROOF OF PURCHASE and VALIDATE WARRANTY Include any contract numbers as PROOF OF COVERAGE If your product is OUT OF WARRANTY and you have NO VALID SOFTWARE SUPPORT AGREEMENT, then please contact your local sales representative purchase the required SSA contracts qualify for the updates. NVR Server Software s This firmware is used upgrade NVR systems ( , , or versions) directly the latest 2.05 DST version with ACC, MPEG-4 and support. IMPORTANT carefully read the following information before attempting upgrade your network video recorder. New Supported Features The following features are supported in the upgrade version: Improved recording and playback during DST Standard Time change for repeat and forward hours ACC video codec (NEW for TridentX only version, requires more system resources and ActiveX Plug-in) MPEG-4 video codec (NEW for TridentX only version, requires more system resources and QuickTime Plug-in) NOTE 1: The latest firmware version is designed be installed on an NVR running on a standard server hardware platform (non-x1). NOTE 2: The latest firmware version can be installed on the legacy TridentX X1 Hardware NVR Appliance Servers using 256MB Compact Flash. However, due the performance limitation of the X1 embedded server motherboard, the following should NOT be attempted and will NOT be supported by : Megapixel Cameras (DO NOT configure MegaPixel on the X1, use only 4CIF or lower resolutions) ACC Cameras (DO NOT configure ACC on the X1, use only mode) MPEG-4 Cameras (DO NOT configure MPEG-4 on the X1, use only mode) NOTE 3: All TridentX-brand client applications will NOT recognize the newer multi-codec NVR firmware versions. Therefore, these cusmers 2

3 will be required upgrade the latest or versions of client software. These latest client software versions are compatible with both and TridentX NVR firmware versions. Software Licensing The software is protected with a valid NVR license file. The NVR license file that enabled your previous version and has not expired will also be compatible with this update. NOTE 1: The newer NVR Server software versions require a valid license (Camera License). NOTE 2: If your current NVR Server license has expired, then the newer NVR Server software may NOT accept the expired license. NOTE 3: If your NVR is In or covered under a, then you can request a free updated license by registering your software on the American Dynamics website at: gistrationform.aspx and include both the original software serial number (located on the purchased disc and is part of the original license file name) and the software generated ZerverID or NVRid file. Within a 24-hour business day, you should receive an reply with the updated license file. 5 Installation Instructions ( NVR) 1. Download the latest NVR firmware version by following instructions from the Department. 2. Log in the NVR as a user with administrar rights using the web browser (Vx Client software). 3. Go the About page ( and make a note of the current firmware version. 4. Go the Configuration Backup page ( and check ALL SECTIONS. Then select the DOWNLOAD butn save a configuration backup of the NVR. 5. Go the hidden NVR reflash page ( in the browser (Web Connect tab in Vx Client). NOTE This should happen BEFORE your local Daylight Savings Time change occurs in your local region. 6. Click on the BROWSE butn locate and specify the latest NVR firmware file. 7. Click on the UPDATE IMAGE butn upload the valid NVR firmware file. 8. After the NVR completes its firmware upload/reboot and is back online, proceed the About page ( confirm that the new firmware version is correct. Be sure select REFRESH ensure you are not looking at a cached page. 9. Once everything is back online, make sure that the date/time/time zone are properly setup and saved on your upgraded NVR. IMPORTANT: Frequently changing the NVR system date/time/time zone manually is not recommended as it could cause possible issues when attempting retrieve recorded video. The proper approach is have the NVR aumatically synchronize with a NTP (Network Time Procol) Server. Refer your User Manual for details. 10. When any changes are made the NVR, it is recommended that you save an updated Configuration Backup. NOTE: The firmware patch will require the applicable client applications be upgraded from the older only versions in order recognize the newer NVR Server and support additional codecs such as ACC and MPEG-4. Usage Instructions ( NVR) During all other hours of the calendar year, the local zone selection is not applicable and will be ignored. However, if you require the NVR search for video during the overlap hour of recording, then you can conduct a single search aumatically locate the overlap of video. Example: In New York, one hour of time (1:00am 2:00am) will be repeated twice on November 2, Therefore, if you wish review video from both recorded time 5

6 periods, you would select the following parameters conduct a single search that spans Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time: Camera: <Select any camera which was set record during this selected time period> Day: NOV From: 01:00 EDT To: 02:00 EST Max Duration: <Select desired amount of video time> When you press SEARCH, the web client will search and display any available recorded video from 01:00~01:59 EDT and then 01:00~01:59 EST (overlap). NOTE: For most regions that recognize Daylight Savings, a different abbreviation is used (e.g. EDT and EST). However, some countries (e.g. Melbourne and Sydney AUSTRALIA) utilize the same 3 character abbreviation for both Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time. Therefore, we have added an additional suffix ( 0 and 1 ) our time zone selections help our cusmers distinguish between the different options for those applicable regions. 6

7 Vx Client Software s This software is used upgrade client PCs running Vx Client ( ), TridentX Vx Client ( ), or TridentX ZView ( ) versions the latest with DST in order be compatible with the new DST versions of NVR with ACC, MPEG-4 and support. IMPORTANT carefully read the following information before attempting upgrade your Vx Client software application. NOTE 3: The newer Vx Client version will most likely NOT accept the older ZView license files. NOTE 4: If your Vx Client is In or covered under a, then you can request a free updated license by registering your software on the American Dynamics website at gistrationform.aspx and include both the original software serial number (located on the purchased disc and is part of the original license file name) and the software generated sysinfo.xml file. Double-click on the latest Vx Client program and follow the instructions on the install shield. 5. After the Vx Client completes its installation, continue launch the application by double-clicking on the shortcut icon located on the deskp or go START- PROGRAM FILES-AMERICAN DYNAMICS-VX CLIENT. 6. Specify the location of the valid Vx Client License File. 7. Log in the NVR(s) and continue use the application. 8
