2 Signature 384 Upsampler Installation Procedure: 1) Remove one Side Panel (End Cap) by removing 4 Allen Screws as shown. 2) Remove 6 Philips screws from top and bottom of cover. Remove cover, and disconnect ribbon cable that attaches the Front Display to the Platinum Main Board. Reference CD Players will have more than one ribbon cable; both will have to be removed. Set cover, Screws and End cap aside. 3) Remove old Input Board, and install your new Signature Board. Be sure to properly align the board so the pins of the board are properly mated to the socket on the Main Board. Depending on your Platinum, there may be extra pins on the Board. This is OK. 4) Locate the Revision Number of the Platinum Main Board. If your Board Revision is 6.4 or above, you may skip the rest of this installation and proceed to the Operation section of this manual. For Revisions less than 6.0 you MAY be finished or if you experience unexpected shutdown when hot you will need to make this power supply change. Input Board For Revision 6.0 to 6.3 you need to make a change to the power supply. You will need a sharp knife, a soldering iron and a piece of wire. 5) The final step has to do with upgrading the firmware in the digital filter. A custom audio file is supplied with your upgrade which must be played by the DAC once the new board is installed. This code is keyed to the serial number of your DAC and Signature Digital Filter if you have one. Both serial numbers must be supplied to MSB to make this file. For this upgrade to work, the DAC must have either a 16x or 32x Digital Filter. Play the update file and listen to the file play. It contains instructions on how to confirm a successful update. 2

3 The USB Option Installation The USB input installation requires no more than drilling a hole in the back cover. It is quite thick steel and this task should not be attempted without proper tools and skills. MSB does not consider this a customer installable upgrade. The DAC should be returned to MSB or taken to a qualified technician. Place template on back, align with top and right edge. Drill pilot hole and then larger hole. Check with actual connector before drilling mounting holes. Attach with screws and nuts provided. Mark out edge of PCB and trim. Reinstall mother board in DAC. Plug in Upsampling board and USB cable.

4 OPERATION - UPSAMPLING The operation is simple. The front panel switch labelled either upsampling or DAC option will switch the upsampling on and off. The display will show the upsampled frequency. This upgrade also allows the SPDIF and MSB Network inputs to accept 384 khz x 32 bit signals. Dip switch 1: ON = Reclocking on, OFF = Reclocking off (no delay) Dip switch 2: ON = Alternate Upsampling algorithm, OFF = Preferred upsampling OPERATION - USB Input Plug a USB cable into your computer. The USB input is now positioned between MSB 1 and MSB 2 as far as the priority input switching is concerned. To manually select the USB input, SELECT MSB 2 Input and remove any MSB device from MSB2.

5 MAC Operation Select SOUND from the PREFERENCES page. The MBS DAC will show up under the OUTPUT tab. Click and close window. That is all you need to do to make the USB your audio output. Output Sample Rates Unfortunately OSX is smart and converts all music played on a MAC to the sample rate you select, rather than its native resolution. This seriously hurts audio quality, especially when the output is not a multiple of the input. (Outputing 48k when playing CDs at 44.1k). Go to the UTILITIES folder and select AUDIO MIDI SETUP. You may select the output format for your MAC. Set it to the native format of the music you wish to play.

6 WINDOWS VISTA The USB output is automatically activiated when plugged in. You should hear audio immediately. Unfortunately Vista is smart and converts all music played on a PC to the sample rate you select, rather than its native resolution. This seriously hurts audio quality, especially when the output is not a multiple of the input. (Outputting 48k when playing CDs at 44.1k). You can set the output format in the control panel as shown below. W I N D O W S XP XP seems to behave d i f f e r e n t l y on different computers. On some it outputs any filed played in its native resolution. On others it does not. These windows show how to select the MSB output.
