4 General information & Safety Instructions This product uses 4 x D 1.5V sized batteries (not included). Do not dispose of batteries in your household waste. Please contact your local authority for details on safe disposal. Never throw batteries into a fire or expose to excessive heat sources. If batteries are swallowed, please seek immediate medical attention. Always ensure correct +/- battery polarity when installing batteries. Do not recharge non-rechargeable batteries. Batteries, should not be thrown away with your household waste. Contact your local authority waste disposal department, as they will be able to provide details of the recycling options available in your area. Electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) contains materials, parts and substances, which can be dangerous to the environment and harmful to human health. Therefore waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) must be disposed of correctly. Equipment, which is marked with the WEEE logo (as shown on the left), should not be thrown away with your household waste. Contact your local authority waste disposal department, as they will be able to provide details of the recycling options available in your area. To prevent possible hearing damage, do not use at high volume levels for long periods. 2

5 General information & Safety Instructions Please read the following safety information before use. C A U T I O N RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK DO NOT OPEN To avoid risk of electric shock do not attempt to open this appliance. Keep away from fire. Do not expose the appliance to water, rain or dampness. Keep this appliance away from direct sunlight and other heat sources. Keep this appliance away from strong magnets. Never cover the ventilation slots on the underside or back of the appliance. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the appliance. Always disconnect the appliance from mains power before cleaning. Clean the exterior of the appliance with a soft cloth only. The instructions for use shall state that the appliance shall not be exposed to dripping or splashing and that no objects filled with liquids such as vases, cups, etc, shall be placed on the appliance. CAUTION: Danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same equivalent type. Where the MAINS plug or appliance coupler is used the device shall remain readily operable. Where an all-pole MAINS SWITCH is used as the disconnection device, the function of the switch shall remain readily operable. 8 Connecting Power Mains Lead This radio uses a 13A, 2 pin mains power lead (supplied). Plug the mains lead into a suitable mains socket and connect the lead to the mains input on the back of the radio. Batteries This radio uses 4 x 1.5V D cell type batteries (not supplied). Do not keep batteries in the radio for long term storage. The radio will pull a charge from the batteries while they are left in even if the unit is not being actively used. To install the batteries push the cover release tab down and pull the cover away from the radio. Please make sure you match the polarity orientation when inserting the batteries. This is marked inside the battery bay in the moulding. 6

9 On/Off Turning The Radio On Once the radio has power either supplied by the mains or batteries, the radio is constantly on. Turning The Radio Off The only way to turn the radio off completely is to turn it off at the mains and unplug it or remove the batteries out of the back. Modes The radio has 3 function modes available. These are Radio, Tape and Bluetooth/Music. Radio To select the radio function move the function switch to RADIO. The radio will play through the speakers. Tape To select the tape function move the function switch to TAPE. The tape deck is ready to be used. /Music To select the bluetooth/music function move the function switch to /MUSIC. The radio will be ready to play mp3 s from an SD/MMC card, a USB stick or from a bluetooth source. 7

10 Radio Mode Using The Radio The radio is able to receive FM, MW and SW band radio signals. The band selector switch will allow you to choose from the following: SW2-13.0MHz MHz (Short Wave) SW1-3.0MHz MHz (Short Wave) MW - 530KHz KHz (Medium Wave) FM - 88MHz - 108MHz (Frequency Modulation) Tuning The Radio Fully extend the telescopic aerial carefully before trying to tune the radio in to an available station. The radio uses an analogue tuner. Turn the Tuner dial in either direction in order to search through the frequencies until you find a preferred station. 8

11 Tape Mode Using The Cassette Tape Deck Press the STOP/EJ. button to open the cassette tape tray. Insert the cassette tape upside down and with the letter facing outwards of the side you wish to play. This is normally indicated with an A or B on each side of the cassette tape. Close the cassette tape tray and press REW. if required to rewind the tape to the beginning. Press play to enjoy the recording on the tape. When the tape reaches the end press the STOP/EJ., remove the tape, turn it over and reinsert it. Close the cassette tape tray and press PLAY to continue listening to the recording. 9

12 Tape Mode Cassette Tape Deck Controls PAUSE Pause the cassette tape while playing or recording. STOP/EJ. Stops the current action / Eject the cassette tape. F.FWD Fast Forwards the inserted cassette tape. REW. Rewinds the inserted cassette tape. PLAY Plays the inserted cassette tape. REC. Records on the inserted cassette tape. Setting Up To Record You are able to record on to a cassette tape from all functions, however you will need to prepare the cassette before recording. Write Protection Tabs Total Play Time Spool Side Indicator Before recording check the total play time required. If the cassette tape states 90 it is a total of 90 minutes, but only 45 minutes per side. Next make sure the write protections tabs are intact. If they are not there then use a little sticky tape and place over each of the holes where the tabs would be. Rewind the tape fully and eject it. Use a hexagon sided pen or pencil to wind the tape forwards until the joining tab is in the middle of the felt then insert the cassette tape in to the tape deck. 10

13 Tape Mode Recording From The Radio Once the cassette tape is ready and inserted you will need to setup the radio. Make sure the function switch is set to RADIO and fully extend the telescopic aerial. Tune the radio into the station you want to record and make sure the signal is as clear as you can get it. When you are ready press PLAY and REC. together. When you are ready to stop recording press STOP/EJ. to stop the cassette tape or leave it to run out of tape on the current side. Live Recording Once the cassette tape is ready and inserted you will need to setup the radio. Make sure the function switch is set to TAPE. In this mode the speakers will record any sound that it picks up. When you are ready press PLAY and REC. together. When you are ready to stop recording press STOP/EJ. to stop the cassette tape or leave it to run out of tape on the current side. Recording From SD/MMC/USB Source Once the cassette tape is ready and inserted you will need to setup the radio. Make sure the function switch is set to /MUSIC. In this mode you will be able to record from the SD/MMC or USB port. Insert a compatible SD/MMC card or USB stick with your MP3 format tracks on. As the tracks start automatically you will need to pause the required track. When you are ready press PLAY and REC. together on the cassette tape controls, then press play on the digital controls. When you are ready to stop recording press STOP/EJ. to stop the cassette tape or leave it to run out of tape on the current side. 11

14 Tape Mode Recording From A Bluetooth Source Once the cassette tape is ready and inserted you will need to setup the radio. Make sure the function switch is set to /MUSIC. In this mode you will be able to record from a bluetooth connected device like a smart phone or tablet. Pair the device to the radio (see page 14 for instructions). Cue up the track you wish to record and when you are ready press PLAY and REC. together on the cassette tape controls, then press play on the digital controls or device. When you are ready to stop recording press STOP/EJ. to stop the cassette tape or leave it to run out of tape on the current side. Write Protection After recording, you can break the write protection tabs or remove the sticky tap used to cover the holes. This will prevent you from accidently recording over a cassette tape you want to save. Write Protection Tabs 12

15 /Music Mode In this mode you can play music from a SD/MMC card, a USB stick or a compatible bluetooth device. In this mode the LED light will quickly until it is paired with a device or a SD/MMC/USB storage device has been connected. Play A SD/MMC/USB Source Insert the required storage device into the appropriate slot. The music will automatically start to play and the LED will flash slowly. The order of play is alphabetical by folder and files. This feature will only play MP3 format that are DRM free from the chosen storage device used. You can skip forward or backwards, pause and play by using the digital controls buttons located next to the SD/MMC card slot on the left (see page 5.). 13

16 /Music Mode Pairing A Bluetooth Source When the radio is this mode, the bluetooth function is automatically in pairing mode. Search for MAXTEK on the available device list and select it on your device that you want to pair to the radio. There is no security code and the unit will pair up straight away. If the pairing is successful the LED will change from a fast flash to a slow flash. Playing A Bluetooth Source Once a device has been paired, turn the devices volume to maximum to get the best result from the radio and use the radios volume to control the output. You can either use the music app s controls to control the music or you can use the digital control buttons to the left of the SD/MMC card slot (see page 5.). 14

18 Warranty Certificate Warranty This product is warranted to be free from defects in workmanship and parts for a period of 36 months from the date of purchase. Defects that occur within this warranty period, under normal use and care, will be repaired, replaced or refunded at our discretion, solely at our option with no charge for parts and labour. The benefits conferred by this warranty are in addition to all rights and remedies in respect of the product the consumer has under existing U.K. laws. Proof of Purchase This warranty is valid for the original purchase and is not transferable. Please keep your purchase receipt as proof of purchase and as proof of the date of when the purchase was made. The receipt must be presented with the warranty card when making a claim under this warranty. Service during the Warranty Period Please ensure the product is properly packaged so as to ensure that no damage occurs in transit. Also make sure that you have included a detailed explanation of the problem. Extent of the Warranty This warranty is limited to defects in workmanship or parts. All defective products or parts will be repaired or replaced. This warranty does not extend to accessories. Normal Wear and Tear This warranty does not cover normal wear and tear of the product or parts. Exclusions This warranty does not cover the following: Any defect caused by accident, misuse, abuse, improper installation or operation, lack or reasonable care, unauthorised modification, loss of parts, tampering or attempted repair by a person not authorised by the distributor. Any product that has been damaged by lightning strike either directly or indirectly, or on a main s or vehicle outlet power surge or liquid ingress. Any product that has not been installed, operated or maintained in accordance with the manufacturer s operating instructions provided with the product. Any product that has been used for purposes other than domestic use. The product if it is located outside of the U.K. and Ireland Any damage caused by improper power input or improper cable connection. Your statutory rights are not affected.
