5 Software Development Tools Workshop4 IDE Software Development Suite Workshop4 IDE is a comprehensive software IDE designed for Microsoft Windows. The Workshop4 IDE provides a software development program for all of the 4D family of processors and modules. The IDE combines the Editor, Compiler, Linker and Downloader to develop complete 4DGL application code. All user application code is developed within the Workshop4 IDE. Workshop4 IDE includes four development environments, for the user to choose based on application requirements or even user skill level. Designer This environment enables the user to write 4DGL code in its natural form to program the display module. ViSi This environment is also provided to transform the display module into a slave serial display module, allowing the user to control the display from any host microcontroller or device with a serial port. ViSi-Genie An advanced environment that doesn t require any 4DGL coding at all, it is all done automatically for you. Simply lay the display out with the objects you want (similar to ViSi), set the events to drive them and the code is written for you automatically. ViSi- Genie provides the latest rapid development experience from 4D Systems. 7 GOLDELOX PROCESSOR The GOLDELOX chip provides 8bit data lines D0-D7, with RES, CS, RS and RD/WR signals to interact with the Display. The GOLDELOX Processor offers modest but comprehensive I/O features and can interface to SPI and serial devices etc. IO1 and IO2 are multi purpose GPIO pins which can interface with analogue, digital, buttons, joystick and Dallas 1-wire devices. Provision is also made for creating complex sound effects for audible user. 8 Graphics Processors PICASO PROCESSOR The PICASO is a custom embedded graphics controller designed to interface with many popular OLED and LCD display panels. Powerful graphics, text, image, animation and countless more features are built rightinside the chip. It offers a simple plug-nplay interface to many 16bit 80-Series colour LCD and OLED displays. The internal architecture of the PICASO is constructed of high level functional blocks that are controlled and supervised by EVE (Extensible Virtual Engine). The combined blocks of EVE, the built-in graphics and system functions and the low level drivers make up and dene the personality of the PICASO Processor (analogy to that of a soft silicon). This is referred to as the Personality-module-micro-Code or PmmC (Firmware in general) for short. 9 DIABLO16 PROCESSOR The DIABLO16 Processor is a custom embedded 4DGL graphics controller designed to interface with many popular OLED and LCD display panels. With its powerful graphics, text, image, and animation abilities built-in, along with numerous more features makes the DIABLO16 a single chip solution for a wide variety of LCD and OLED display solutions. The DIABLO16 offers a simple plug-n-play interface to many 16-bit 80-Series colour LCD and OLED displays, and is designed to work with minimal design effort as all of the data and control signals are provided by the chip to interface directly to the display. This offers enormous advantage to the designer in development time and cost saving and takes away all of the burden of low level design. 11 Tech chat with James Now, James leads the 4D Systems engineering team, while still maintaining a healthy portion of technical work himself. James graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Engineering Majoring in Mechatronics. For 7 years, he worked as an Industrial Automation Engineer, working with PLC s, HMI s and various other industrial electrical equipment in the deep South of New Zealand. After spending afterhours doing electronics and CAD work for local businesses towards the end of these years, he started working part time for 4D Systems as a Senior Design Engineer, where products such as the popular ulcd- 32PTU were developed. In 2011, James was heavily involved in the conceptualisation of the new 4D Workshop4 software, where the engineering, sales, and marketing teams came together to kick start the process to make Workshop4 successful. By 2012, he took on a full time role with 4D Systems, where he progressed to Product Development Manager. understanding how things work and discovering the secrets of making a good and successful product. Upcoming products Fast Fact The 4D Systems engineering team has been hard at it again, coming up with more new products which will be released over the next few months. The ulcd-43p range of PICASO based 4.3 modules has been a huge success and has been available for many years. We have now produced an upgraded version using the more powerful DIABLO16 processor, which has many more features, more Flash, more RAM, meaning bigger and better products/projects. Models include the ulcd-43d (non touch), ulcd-43dt (Resistive Touch) and ulcd-43dct (Capacitive Touch) 4.3 DIABLO16 display modules. Development Kits. Ever wanted a display platform which you can develop with easily, maybe wanted to interface with Arduino, Raspberry PI or the Intel Galileo? 4D produces a range of development kits which include either a 3.2 or 4.3 display module mounted on an aluminium stand with a display Bezel, and features breadboards on the back for prototyping circuits. If you want to develop with a host, 4D is also releasing versions with an Arduino, or Raspberry Pi B+ mounted next to the breadboard. More variants will also become available over time. These are great for sitting on your work bench and developing with. No more untidy mess of wires and no more clutter on your desk. This 0.96 beauty is loved by many and it is easy to see why. It s perfect for so many applications. One of our recent creations and one I love. Decent sized screen, big resolution and sporting a powerful PIC32 processor. If you need a lot of information in a relatively small space, love Arduino/Chipkit or PIC s, this high density display module would be my pick, as it features Arduino/Chipkit style headers for easily attaching shields, and is packed with features. If you want MP3 audio in your product/project, you want to control it with buttons or over a Serial Port, this compact module can play thousands of songs off a MicroSD card, and can power a 3W speaker, or feed DAC output signals to a larger amplifi er. These cards are SPI Compatible, they are sourced directly from the Manufacturer, Phison in Taiwan, and are the recommended micro SD card for use with 4D Systems products. Not all cards on the market are SPI compatible, and therefore not all cards can be used in 4D Systems products. Buy with confi dence, choose the cards recommended by 4D Systems.
