2 Description The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 is an excellent choice if you are: Experiencing growth in online storage requirements Considering an entry tape automation solution for your data storage needs Considering an Ultrium tape solution The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 contains one or two IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives. The Ultrium Tape Library contains 23 cartridge slots and a one-slot I/O station, providing a native library capacity of up to 4.8 TB (9.6 TB with 2:1 compression). Single-drive units can be upgraded to accommodate two drives Model L23 features Each Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 has an operator control panel on the front with a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and a five-button keypad. The keypad controls navigation through the library menu for displaying status information and error codes on the LCD. From this panel, the operator can initiate actions such as moving and loading tape cartridges or invoking diagnostics. The 3582 Model L23 has two removable magazines. A key lock provides front door locking. The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 is designed for either stand-alone desktop operation or rack mount installation into an ANSI/EIA standard 19-inch rack with four EIA units of space. A Remote Management Unit/Specialist option allows network control of the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 operations. The IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drive supports the Ultrium 200 GB Data Cartridge, which is designed for increased tape speeds and high-density data recording. Ultrium 2 Tape Drives The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 supports the IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drive. The IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drive is the second-generation LTO Ultrium tape drive in the IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium family of products. The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive offers the following significant improvements over the Ultrium 1 Tape Drive: Tape drive performance is more than doubled, up to 35 MB/sec native data transfer rate (70 MB/sec with 2:1 compression). Aggregate library data rates of up to 464 GB/hour (with 2:1 compression) for a fully configured two-drive 3582 Model L23 library allow extremely high data transfer performance. IBM Ultrium 2 Tape Drives can read and write original LTO Ultrium Data Cartridges at original Ultrium 1 capacities and with improved performance up to 20 MB/sec native data transfer rate (40 MB/sec with 2:1 compression). Note: Although the IBM Ultrium Tape Drive provides the capability for high tape performance, the actual throughput is a function of many components, such as system processor, disk data rate, data block size, data compressibility, I/O attachments, and the system or application software used. For example, the HVD Ultra SCSI interface has a maximum data transfer rate of 40 MB/sec, so Ultrium Tape Drives on that SCSI interface will have a lower data transfer rate. The compression technology used in the tape drive can potentially double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed. The tape cartridge capacity is potentially doubled up to 200 GB native capacity (400 GB with 2:1 compression) with the use of the new Ultrium 200 GB Data Cartridge. The 3582 Model L23 library can contain up to 4.8 TB (9.6 TB with 2:1 compression), using up to two IBM Ultrium 2 Tape Drives. Digital speed matching The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive is designed to perform dynamic speed matching to adjust the drive s native data rate as closely as possible to the net host data rate (after data compressibility has been factored out). This helps to provide the dual benefit of reducing the number of backhitch repositions and improving throughput performance. Power management The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive power management function controls the drive electronics to be either completely turned off or in a low-power mode. These power modes occur only when the circuit functions are not needed for drive operation. Channel calibration The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive channel calibration feature allows for customization of each read/write data channel for optimum performance. The customization enables compensation for variations in the recording channel transfer function, media characteristics, and read/write head characteristics. Separate writing of multiple filemarks Separate writing of multiple filemarks causes any write command of two or more filemarks to cause a separate dataset to be written containing all filemarks after the first. This feature has two advantages. First, it can help improve performance if a subsequent append overwrites somewhere after the first filemark. Second, write of multiple filemarks typically indicates a point where an append operation might occur after the first of these filemarks. This change can help prevent having to rewrite datasets containing customer data and the first filemark in cases where such an append occurs. Wide attachment options The IBM Ultrium 2 Tape Drives come with LVD Ultra160 SCSI, HVD Ultra SCSI, or switched fabric 2-Gbps Fibre Channel attachments for connection to a wide spectrum of open system servers. Larger internal data buffer There is a 64 MB internal data buffer in the Ultrium 2 Tape Drive as compared to a 32 MB internal data buffer in the Ultrium 1 Tape Drive. Faster cartridge fill times (for both Ultrium 1 and Ultrium 2 data cartridges) The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive can fill an Ultrium GB data cartridge 12% faster, with a sustained data rate 128% better when compared to the Ultrium 1 Tape Drive filling an Ultrium 100 GB data cartridge. The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive can fill an Ultrium 100 GB data cartridge 25% faster, with a sustained data rate 33% better, when compared to the Ultrium 1 Tape Drive. The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive

3 can fill an Ultrium 200 GB data cartridge in 1 hour 44 minutes with a sustained data rate of GB/hr. The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive can fill an Ultrium 100 GB data cartridge in 1 hour 29 minutes with a sustained data rate of 71.9 GB/hr. Faster data access, rewind, and load times The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive has the following improvements: Ultrium 2 Ultrium 1 Cartridge Load Time 15 seconds 18 seconds Maximum Rewind Time 80 seconds 110 seconds Average File Access Time 49 seconds 73 seconds Proven IBM LTO Ultrium 1 features enhanced in the IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drive include: Servo and track layout technology There are 512 data tracks in the Ultrium 2 tape format versus 384 data tracks in Ultrium 1. Surface Control Guiding Mechanism IBM s patented Surface Control Guiding Mechanism guides the tape along the tape path in the IBM Ultrium Tape Drive. This method uses the surface of the tape, rather than the edges, to control tape motion. This is designed to result in less tape damage (especially to the edges of the tape) and less tape debris, which can come from the damaged edges and can accumulate in the head area. Magneto Resistive (MR) head design Use of flat lap head technology in MR heads for the Ultrium 2 Tape Drive can help minimize contact and wear on the tape as it moves over the read/write heads. LTO Data Compression (LTO-DC) The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive uses LTO-DC which is an implementation of a Lempel-Ziv class 1 (LZ-1) data compression algorithm. LTO-DC is an extension of Adaptive Lossless Data Compression (ALDC) and an improvement over previous lossless compression algorithms. Users of LTO-DC can expect to achieve better data compression as users of ALDC. LTO Cartridge Memory (LTO-CM) Contained within the LTO Ultrium data cartridge is the LTO-CM, which is a passive, contactless silicon storage device that is physically a part of the cartridge. The LTO-CM is used to hold information about that specific cartridge, the media in the cartridge, and the data on the media. The storage capacity of the LTO-CM is 4,096 bytes. Communication between the drive and the LTO-CM is via a low-level RF field transmitted by the drive to the cartridge. Statistical Analysis and Reporting System (SARS) The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive uses the SARS to assist in isolating failures between media and hardware. The SARS uses the cartridge performance history saved in the CM module and the drive performance history kept in the drive flash EEPROM to determine the more likely cause of failure. The SARS can cause the drive to request a cleaner tape, to mark the media as degraded, and to indicate that the hardware has degraded. Multi-Path support The patented Multi-Path function of the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 supports a sharing of the library robotics. This is accomplished by partitioning the library into two multiple logical libraries and providing each logical library its own separate and distinct drive, control path, and storage slots. The input/output (I/O) slot is shared on a first-come-first-served basis. This type of partitioning is designed to allow heterogeneous applications to share the library robotics independent of each other. Cartridges under library control are not shared between logical libraries, nor allowed to be moved between logical libraries. An example of heterogeneous sharing is a Windows 2000 application using the drive and storage slots of one logical library while a UNIX application uses the drive and slots of another logical library. High-performance tape cartridge The tape cartridge capacity of the IBM TotalStorage Ultrium 200 GB Data Cartridge has doubled over the original IBM TotalStorage Ultrium Data Cartridge to 200 GB native capacity (400 GB with 2:1 compression). Both cartridges have been designed to provide several enhancements over previous tape technologies. They are designed to work with tape drives that have increased tape speeds and high-density data recording. The case is specially designed for use in automated libraries and is designed for repeated, unattended, trouble-free handling. The tape itself is an advanced metal particle tape developed for durability and capacity. Product positioning As you compare competitive tape solutions, consider: Capacity and performance requirements Data integrity, reliability, and availability Storage usage and application requirements Affordability Loyalty to legacy or existing tape formats The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 and compatible software applications lead in addressing these requirements and constitute a functionally rich tape storage solution incorporating LTO Ultrium tape technology. You can help gain flexibility of automated tape library management and unattended save/restore operations. The Ultrium Tape Library is an excellent choice for tape automation for xseries, pseries, RS/6000, iseries, AS/400, and other popular open systems. The 3582 Model L23 utilizes the patented Multi-Path architecture to help allow homogeneous or heterogeneous open systems applications to share the library robotics. The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 offers a 24 cartridge capacity and holds up to two IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives. It provides excellent price/performance in the open systems environments where the tape automation requirements are satisfied by one to two drives or a library capacity of up to 9.6 TB (with 2:1 compression) or up to 4.8 TB native. The 3582 Model L23 is designed to address growing storage requirements and shrinking backup windows and is part of a family of IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium tape products. The 3582 Model L23 is an excellent tape storage solution for customers with existing digital linear tape experience or requiring high-performance automated tape backup. In addition to reading and writing on IBM LTO Ultrium-format tape cartridges, the Ultrium 2 Tape Drives provide an enhanced functional alternative to DLT/SDLT, 1/4-inch, 4mm, 8mm/AIT, or IBM Magstar MP 3570 tape drives. For capacity requirements in the 3.6 TB to 28.8 TB (compressed) range with a scalable automation need, the Ultrium Scalable Tape Library 3583 should be considered

4 with its 1 to 6 IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives and 18 to 72 cartridge capacity. For capacity requirements greater than 28.8 TB (compressed), the IBM TotalStorage UltraScalable Tape Library 3584 should be considered. The UltraScalable Tape Library 3584 can match system capacity and performance requirements from 28 TB to 1,376 TB (56 TB to 2,752 TB with 2:1 compression) using up to 192 IBM Ultrium tape drives in up to library frames. For capacity requirements less than 1.4 TB (compressed), the IBM TotalStorage Ultrium Tape Autoloader 3581 and the IBM TotalStorage Ultrium Tape Drive 3580 should be considered. For mission-critical data protection, consider the proven IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590 or the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Automated Tape Library 3494 which are optimized for high-cycle and start/stop intensive tape applications and have enterprise multi-mode and host attachment. A list of compatible software is available from your IBM representative or at: Select LTO Support, then the Interoperability Matrix and Software ISVs, and view the Supported Storage Management Software for the product. IBM continues to work with ISVs to support the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23. Individual application vendors should be contacted for specific information and availability dates. Consult with ISV providers for their support of mixed drive types and media types in the same logical library. Compatibility: The IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives can read and write original IBM LTO Ultrium Data Cartridges. The LTO Ultrium 200 GB Data Cartridges can only be used on the IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives. However, IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives and cartridges can be resident in the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 with IBM LTO Ultrium 1 tape cartridges. Limitations: Although the compression technology can increase the amount of data stored on the media, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed. Fibre Channel cable lengths are limited to 500 m (1650 ft). Total LVD SCSI cable length is limited to 25 m (81 ft) using point-to-point interconnection (for example, one host connected to only one tape drive). Total LVD SCSI cable length is 12 m (39 ft) using multi-drop interconnection (for example, one host connected to more than one tape drive on the same SCSI bus). Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.1 m (0.33 ft). Total HVD SCSI cable lengths are limited to 25 m (81 ft.) using point-to-point or multi-drop interconnection. Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.2 m (0.66 ft). Data transfer rates on the SCSI bus can be affected by the amount of IBM Ultrium Tape Drives attached to the bus. For optimal performance, it is recommended that no more than two IBM Ultrium Tape Drives be attached to an individual SCSI bus. Installing more than one IBM LTO Ultrium Tape Drive on a SCSI bus may impact system performance. Intermixing of other SCSI devices on the same SCSI bus as the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 may impact performance of those devices. The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 operating environment must not conflict with media operating and storage requirements. If media is stored in the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 for more than ten hours the media storage temperature requirements must be met
