1 Hardware Announcement May 9, 2006 IBM 3996 Optical Library offers expansive optical storage for data retention Overview The IBM 3996 Optical Library is a large-scale, externally attached device that uses 5.25-inch 30 GB Ultra Density Optical (UDO) technology. The 3996 attaches to the IBM System i and IBM System p of workstations and servers. The three models of the 3996: Provide up to three times the capacity of previous optical libraries offered by IBM Can handle an optical disc providing up to 30 GB (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) of optical storage in each of the 3996 Optical Library media slots Support Write Once, Read Many (WORM), and rewritable recording technologies in a single library Provide an orderable update feature to the microcode of an installed 3996 Optical Library (Model 032, 080, and ) to the latest microcode firmware level Include a barcode reader as an optional feature Have a low voltage differential (LVD) SCSI interface To help address your requirements, you can choose from three models: The 3996 Model 032 has the capability of holding up to 32 optical discs with a total storage capacity of up to 960 GB. The Model 032 has one 30 GB optical disc drive and an option for adding a second drive. The 3996 Model 080 has the capability of holding up to 80 optical discs with a total storage capacity of up to 2.4 TB. The Model 080 has two 30 GB optical disc drives with an option of increasing to four drives. Adding two more drives reduces the number of disc slots to 72, resulting in a capacity of up to 2.16 TB. The 3996 Model has the capability of holding up to optical discs with a total storage capacity of up to 5.2 TB. The Model has two 30 GB optical disc drives with an option of going to four drives. Adding two more drives reduces the number of disc slots to 166, resulting in a capacity of up to 4.98 TB. Adding two additional optical drives to Models 080 and reduces the total storage capacity of the 3996 by 240 GB. Contact your application provider for availability. Currently installed 3996 Optical Libraries on an IBM System i are compatible with IBM System p. A library firmware upgrade may be required. The latest 3996 microcode firmware level is available by ordering feature number 0520 (3996 Functional Enhancement Field). 2 Description The 3996, offered in three models, is an externally attached storage library that uses 30 GB optical disc technology. It is available for use with the IBM System i and IBM System p family of workstations and servers and attaches through an external system adapter. The 3996 must be the only device attached to an adapter on an IBM System i that uses software version i5/os V5.3 or the IBM System p with software version AIX 5.2.0, or later. The 3996 supports Write Once, Read Many (WORM), and rewritable recording technologies in a single library. A barcode reader is available as an option. The 3996 uses a low voltage differential (LVD) SCSI interface. Media Rewritable 30 GB Media 10pk Provides ten rewritable 30 GB media. WORM 30 GB Media 10pk Provides ten WORM 30 GB media. Note: The maximum number of these features that may be ordered (in any combination) with the 3996 is two for the 3996 Model 032; for the 3996 Model 080 and 3996 Model, the maximum is four. If additional media are required, refer to the Supplies section for ordering instructions. Microcode updates Microcode for the IBM 3996 Optical Library is preloaded prior to shipment.
