1 Hardware Announcement February 13, 2002 IBM pseries 610 Models 6C1 and 6E1 Value Increased with POWER3-II 333 MHz Processor Option and Internal SCSI RAID Support Overview To increase the IBM pseries 610 Model 6C1 and 6E1 system options and value, the POWER3 -II 64-bit microprocessor running at 333 MHz with 4 MB of Level 2 (L2) is now available on the two models. This new 333 MHz processor option offers you an excellent entry price-performance option on the Models 6C1 and 6E1. When the Model 6C1 or 6E1 is configured with the new 333 MHz processor, the system will contain a base of 512 MB of main memory, expandable to 8 GB, and two non-hot-swap disk bays that can accommodate up to 72.8 GB of disk storage. An optional feature will allow you to add six hot-swap, front-accessible disk bays that will increase your internal disk capacity to GB. In addition, Internal SCSI RAID is now supported on the pseries 610 Models 6C1 and 6E1. RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) makes disk drives work together as an array. The array looks like a single virtual disk with improved data availability and performance. Memory feature conversions are now available on the IBM pseries 690 Model 681. Customers with installed p690 systems may want to increase the memory installed in their systems via these feature conversions. Feature Conversions pseries 690 ( ) Feature conversions are always implemented on a quantity of one for quantity of one basis. Multiple existing features may not be converted to a single new feature. Hardware Requirements Technical Information Note: Due to ongoing improvements and/or corrections to the firmware, it is mandatory that the System/Service Processor Firmware be maintained at the latest Firmware level available prior to installation of this feature. First, you will need to check the current System (refer to Section 1.0 on the menu). Second, if the System Firmware level is not at the required level, you will have to update it to the necessary level (refer to Section 2.0 on the menu). 1.0 Check the Current System Firmware and Service Processor Level: The System Firmware and Service Processor levels can be verified by using: AIX command or ASCII Terminal A. Using AIX: 1. At the AIX prompt execute the following command: lscfg -vp grep -p ROM (press enter) (This command produces a report similar to the following) SP Card: ROM Level. (Non-alterable)... sh System Firmware ROM Level. (Alterable)... SPH00157 Notes If the current Firmware level is earlier than the required level, you will need to update the Firmware. If the current Firmware level is the same as, or later than, the level shown above; you should still check to see if you have the latest firmware level available as listed in the RS/6000 Support Web site (refer to Section 2.0). 2. If you conclude that the firmware level must be updated, proceed to Section 2.0, Update the Firmware. B. Using ASCII Terminal 1. The Service Processor Firmware is shown at the top of the MAIN MENU when connecting an ASCII Terminal to serial port Power ON the system Press the 1 on the ASCII Terminal Keyboard when the keyboard text symbol appears during startup. After the text-base System Management Service starts, the System Firmware version is shown at the top of the SMS menu. System Firmware Version SPH00157 Notes If the current Firmware level is earlier than required level, you will need to update the Firmware. If the current Firmware level is the same as, or later than, the level shown above; you should still check to see if you have the latest firmware level available as listed in the RS/6000 Support Web site (refer to Section 2.0). 3. If you conclude that the firmware level must be updated, proceed to Section 2.0, Update the Firmware. 2.0 Update the Service Processor and System Firmware 1. For the latest Firmware level go to the Web site below and choose the description hot-link in the RS/6000 System/Service Processor Microcode Combined Microcode table entry for C1 or E1 at: download.html If you do not have Web access, contact your IBM service representative for assistance. After you have completed the Firmware Update Procedure, use the document that was shipped with the base system for instructions to Remove/Install the processor. Feature number 6277 is Initial Order only. Redundant Power Supply AC (#6275) System Memory A minimum of 512 MB of memory is required. I/O Adapters Feature numbers 2498 and 4258 are required for internal RAID. Feature number 4258 requires feature number 2498 or 6203, or follow-on adapter, to be installed. Storage Devices/Bays When ordering feature number 5322, feature number 6567 is required for hot-swap disks feature numbers 3263, 3264, or 3265 When ordering feature number 4259, feature numbers 6156 (8-mm 20/40 GB Tape) and 2623 (DVD-RAM) are not available. IDE/SCSI Cable Configurations Feature number 4259 is used to connect the integrated controller to the media bays and bolt-in DASD. It is required when cable (#4258) is used in a RAID configuration and a device is in media bay 1 or 2 and bolt-in DASD bay 0. Other Feature number 6166 requires feature number 6567 to be installed. Planning Information Cable Orders: No cables required. Security, Auditability, and Control This product uses the security and auditability features of host software and application software. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
