1 Hardware Announcement April 23, 2001 IBM SAN Fibre Channel Managed Hub Provides Entry-Level FC-AL Connectivity Overview The IBM Storage Area Network (SAN) Fibre Channel Managed Hub supports entry-level work group Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) connectivity for such applications as high-availability clustering, storage consolidation, and LAN-free backup. The Managed Hub is designed for implementing entry-level homogeneous multinode server clusters and storage systems, providing high-speed interconnections for FC-AL environments. An arbitrated loop is logically formed by connecting all eight ports on the Hub into a single loop, or the ports can be zoned into several arbitrated loops. Each port supports 100 MB/second full duplex data transfer. And with nonblocking architecture, the Managed Hub can handle simultaneous data transfer. There are seven fixed, short Wave optical ports on the Managed Hub. The eighth port is a Gigabit Interface Convertor (GBIC) slot that can be configured for either short wave or long wave optical media. Two Managed Hubs can be cascaded, providing a loop of up to fourteen ports, and can be attached to the IBM SAN Fibre Channel Switch providing loop attachment of storage devices. The StorWatch Fibre Channel Managed Hub Specialist, included with the Managed Hub, enables you to configure and manage the Hub via a Web browser from a workstation over an Ethernet network connection to the Managed Hub. The StorWatch Specialist also provides Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) messages, traps, and Management Information Base (MIBs) that is designed to be integrated into existing enterprise structures. The FC Managed Hub optionally supports Fabric Watch for advanced monitoring of key hub components allowing threshold settings and counters that trigger notifications. Key Prerequisites The IBM SAN Fibre Channel Managed Hub supports attachment of the following server, storage, and SAN products: Intel-based servers running Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server Edition; or Windows NT 4.0 Server or Enterprise Server Edition IBM iseries e-servers with OS/400 V5R1 IBM Netfinity FAStT500 and FAStT200 RAID Controller subsystems IBM Enterprise Storage Server IBM Modular Storage Server IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem IBM SAN Fibre Channel Switch IBM SAN Data Gateway and Router with all supported storage subsystems Specific details on models, adapters, operating system releases, and configuration options are available on the Web at: /fchub Planned Availability Date April 27, 2001 At a Glance The IBM SAN Fibre Channel Managed Hub offers: Industry standard Fibre Channel attachment High-speed performance utilizing nonblocking switch-based technology Simultaneous 100 MB/second full duplex data transfers across all ports Eight ports, one that is configurable with either a short wave or long wave optical GBIC StorWatch FC Managed Hub Specialist, a Web browser interface for configuration, management, and service Support of industry standard MIBs enabling standard SNMP management Fabric Watch management capabilities For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: YE001 This announcement is provided for your information only. 2 Description The IBM SAN Fibre Channel Managed Hub provides industry standard Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop connectivity of an entry-level homogeneous cluster of host servers and storage systems. The Managed Hub has eight FC-AL ports. Seven ports support fixed short wave optical media for connecting devices on multimode fiber up to 500 meters. The eighth port is a Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) slot that can be configured for either short wave optical (#2010), or long wave optical (#2020) media. Long wave singlemode fiber can be up to 10 kilometers. The Managed Hub is an integrated rack-mountable component that is serviced as a single replaceable unit. Included with the Managed Hub is a rack-mounting kit, product documentation, and a power cord for connecting to the Power Distribution Unit (PDU) in the rack. The Managed Hub can be installed in the Netfinity RACK ( ) or an equivalent, industry standard 19-inch rack. A stand-alone configuration is also an option with feature number In rack-mounted configurations, 1U space and one outlet on the rack PDU are required. For stand-alone configurations, you must order the country-unique power cord (#98xx). Attachment to host servers and storage systems requires fiber optical cables. The short wave ports require multimode optical cables, either 50.0/125 micron optical cables for distances up to 500 meters, or 62.5/125 micron fiber optical cables for distances up to 175 meters. If a long wave GBIC is utilized, the required fiber optical cable is a singlemode, 9.0/125 micron cable for distances up to ten kilometers. These cables are customer-supplied, or orderable with the following two part numbers: Feature number meter Multimode (50.0/125 u) Fiber Optical Cable Feature number meter Multimode (50.0/125 u) Fiber Optical Cable The Fabric Watch Activation feature (#7301) provides a means to obtain the unique activation key necessary to enable the Fabric Watch function within firmware level 2.2.1, or later on a specific Fibre Channel Managed Hub. The Fabric Watch feature allows you to monitor key elements of the SAN fabric and FC hubs. This monitoring helps to improve management capabilities and enables you to identify and escalate potential problems. Fabric Watch continuously monitors each element for: Various fabric events. FC Managed Hub environmentals, on the ports and GBICs. Out-of-boundary conditions. Fabric Watch then provides notification when any of the defined boundaries are exceeded. You can configure exactly which elements are monitored and can set the thresholds for such conditions as errors, status, and performance counters. Fabric Watch is accessed through: The StorWatch FC Managed Hub Specialist included with the FC Managed Hub A Telnet interface to the FC Managed Hub A SNMP-based enterprise manager A configuration file to the FC Managed Hub With the Fabric Watch Activation (#7301), you will receive a unique Transaction Key and documentation. The Transaction Key entitles you to enable the specific activation feature on one IBM SAN FC Managed Hub unit. To enable the activation feature, you will first need access to the Internet, where you will indicate the exact serial number and worldwide name (wwn) of the specific FC Managed Hub to be enabled, and the Transaction Key you received. A unique activation key will be returned to you to enter into the FC Managed Hub with the licenseadd command. Step-by-step instructions and the Internet address are provided with the Transaction Key. The Fabric Watch Activation feature requires the FC Managed Hub to be at firmware level 2.2.1, or later. The latest firmware level can be downloaded from the Web at: Accessibility by People with Disabilities For Hardware Offerings The following features support use by people with disabilities: Ports and connectors support connection of industry-standard devices Euro Currency This product is not impacted by euro currency. Product Positioning The IBM SAN Fibre Channel Managed Hub is a component in IBM s Fibre Channel SAN connectivity product offerings. The Managed Hub enables customers making initial investments in Fibre Channel connectivity to begin with small workgroup clusters of host servers and storage systems. The Managed Hub implements the industry standard Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) protocol, providing: High-speed simultaneous data transfers between all ports Fault isolation at the port level A StorWatch Specialist for configuration and management Customers can benefit from the Managed Hub if they are beginning to implement Fibre Channel connectivity between host servers and storage systems in homogeneous server environments. Customers with larger system requirements and needs for expansion should consider the IBM SAN Fibre Channel Switch and the implementation of a SAN fabric.
