2 Evernote for ipad: Installing the App and Creating Your Account Naturally, your first step will be to download and install the free Evernote app from the itunes App Store. Evernote for ipad (which, technically, is a universal app that also runs on the iphone and ipod Touch) requires ios 3.1 or higher. But, even the first ipads to ship included a newer version of ios (3.2). In other words, any ipad running an official version of ios will support Evernote for ipad. The first time you launch Evernote for ipad, it will give you the option of logging in with an existing account or creating a new account. If you don't already have an account, tap "Create an account" and complete the registration form that appears. Once your account has been created, you can tap "Sign in" and enter the username and password you just used when registering. If you already use Evernote on another computer or device, then you already have an account and you can tap "Sign in" and enter the same username and password there. An Introduction to Notebooks in Evernote for ipad Notebooks are just what you expect: containers for notes. Just like every piece of content you add to Evernote lives in a note, every note lives in a notebook. Each Evernote account is limited to 250 notebooks. Notebooks created on the desktop come in two flavors: local and synchronized. Local notebooks only reside on the computer where they are created and are not synced to Evernote on the Web. Syncrhonized notebooks, on the other hand, are automatically synchronized and are available on all of your Evernoteenabled computers and devices. While Evernote for ipad allows you to create new notebooks, any notebook you create on your ipad will be of the synchronized variety. The notebook in which a note lives is controlled within the note editor. Tap the blue arrow next to Notebooks in the note editor. There, you'll see a list of all of your existing notebooks, plus a text field at the top labeled "Find or Create Notebook". To add the current note to a new notebook, start typing in the name of your new notebook and when you're finished, tap the plus button next to the notebook name:

3 An Introduction to Notes and the Note Editor in Evernote for ipad Notes are the basic building block of Evernote; every piece of information you add to Evernote will be stored in a note. In addition to a title and body, each note contains the following attributes, most of which are assigned automatically (we'll cover the non-obvious ones a little later): 1 Created and Modified dates 2 Source URL: blank unless the note was created using a web clipper, otherwise contains the URL of the web page where the content originally appeared. 3 Location: blank unless created using a GPS-enabled mobile device, otherwise contains a set of latitude/longitude coordinates indicating where, physically, the note was created. 4 Source: the means by which the note was created (mobile device, , etc.) or the application where the content originated (Microsoft Word, etc.) 5 Notebook: the container where this note lives. 6 Tags: simple text labels that describe the content of the note. To create a new note in Evernote for ipad, tap the new note button:

4 This will launch the note editor. Using the keyboard or the series of buttons above the note title, you can add one or more of the following: 1 Bold, italic, underline, stricken or highlighted text: 2 Hyperlinks: 3 Preset styles:

5 4 Checkboxes: 5 Numbered and Unordered Lists: 6 Indented/Unindented Lines: To change the title, notebook and tags associated with this note, tap each of these buttons, you can tap either of these fields directly beneath the toolbar:

6 to record an audio clip, tap the microphone button. The recorded audio will be added to your note: To attach one or more photos to your note from the Camera Roll, tap the photo icon: Finally, tapping the camera will launch your device's camera and automatically add the photo taken to the note: As we've seen, notes can contain text and images, but notes created on other Evernote applications may also contain files like PDFs, Word documents, etc. If these files are viewable on ios, Evernote for ipad will allow you to view them from within the app. Evernote users with free accounts can create notes up to 25 megabytes (mb) in size; Premium account holders can create notes up to 50mb.

7 An Introduction to Saved Searches in Evernote for ipad Creating and executing saved searches in Evernote for ipad is quite simple (if you've not familiar with Saved Searches, read this before continuing). Creating Saved Searches To create a new Saved Search in Evernote for ipad, you'll first need to issue a search. Once you've done so, you'll see a small button at the top of your search results (a magnifying glass with a plus sign next to it). Tap that button to open the New Saved Search dialog. Enter the name of the Saved Search and tap Save. Tha name can be whatever you like. Running Saved Searches Tap the More heading on the home screen to reveal the Searches option. Tapping this will take you to the Saved Search screen where you'll see a grid made up of piles of notes. Each pile represents a Saved Search (more specifically, the notes that match it). Tap an of these piles to view the notes that match the Saved Search. An Introduction to Tags in Evernote for ipad Tags are short pieces of text that can be applied to your notes to help organize and/or group them. For example, notes that contain recipes might be tagged with the major ingredients ("chicken", "pork", "squash", etc.). Notes containing scanned bank statements or other financial documents might be tagged with "finances" or "money". There are two ways to apply tags to a note: 1 To choose your tags from a list of tags, tap the blue arrow to the right of the Tags field in the note editor. You can also use this list to create new tags; just type the name of the new tag in the text field at the top of the list and tapp "Add" when you're finished.

8 2 You can also type your tags in directly into the Tags field in the note editor. Simply tap next to the word "Tags:" and start typing. Evernote for ipad will quickly narrow your list of existings tags to match what you're typing (if you'd like to use an existing tag), or you can just type a new tag and hit return: You can also view all of your tags in alphabetical order by tapping the Tags heading at the top of the Home screen: Below each tag is the number of notes that have been assigned that tag. Tapping a tag will show you all of the notes that match that tag.

9 Adding content to Evernote using Each Evernote account comes with a unique address which can be used to add content via . If you visit the Settings after logging in on Evernote on the web, you'll see a section caled " ing to Evernote". In this section, you'll find an address that looks like this: [your username].abc123@m.evernote.com. Sending an to that address will create a new note in Evernote using the subject as the note title, the body as the note body and the source address as the note author. If you're using one of our desktop or mobile client applications, see the list below for where to locate your Evernote address: 1 Windows: Select Account Info from the Tools menu; your address will appear below " notes to". 2 Mac: Select Preferences from the Evernote application menu and browse to the Account Info tab. 3 iphone: Tap All Notes the Settings at the top left; scroll down and tap Evernote address under Settings. 4 ipad: Tap the Settings gear button at the bottom right; scroll down and tap Evernote address under Settings. 5 Android: Tap the Evernote menu, select Settings and scroll down until you see Evernote address. Also, Evernote allows you to designate the target notebook and tags for an ed note in the subject line. For example, if you wanted your ed note to appear in your Cooking notebook, simply append "@Cooking" to the subject (without the quotation marks). If you wanted to tag the note, just add tags to the subject like this: #recipes #vegetarian #sometag. Note that if you want to designate the target notebook and tags using this method, you must place the notebook name before the tags. Here is an example of the correct way to format the subject using this syntax: Authentic #recipes #vegetarian #baking Note that both the notebook designation and the tags appear at the end of the subject. Also, any notebook or tags added to the subject must already exist in your Evernote account. Using the above example: assuming you didn't already have a tag "baking" in your Evernote account, the title of the note would contain "#baking" once it arrived in your Evernote account and that tag will not be applied. If you designate a non-existent notebook in the subject, the note will be added to your default notebook. Customizing Your Address Premium Evernote users are allowed to customize their Evernote address (e.g., change johnny.a1b2c3@m.evernote.com to johnny@m.evernote.com). If you're a Premium Evernote subscriber and would like to take advantage of this feature, contact Evernote Support.

10 Can I send notes to Evernote using Twitter? Yes, sending messages to Evernote from Twitter is very simple and only takes a couple of minutes to set up: 1. Follow myen from your Twitter account. 2. In a couple of minutes, you'll get a direct message (or 'DM') from myen containing a link for you to click. 3. When you click the link, you'll be taken to your Evernote Settings page (you'll be asked to login if you haven't already). Click "Link Accounts" in the Twitter section of the Settings page. Once you've linked your Evernote and Twitter accounts, adding new Evernote notes to your account using Twitter is easy: you can send direct messages to myen or simply include '@myen' in any Twitter message - both of these will be added to Evernote. Also, if your Twitter message contains a link to an image on TwitPic (a Twitter photo sharing service), a thumbnail of that image will also be added to your new note, along with a link to view the full-size image. GPS and Location Information in Evernote for ipad Each time you create a note using Evernote for ipad, the application will attempt to get your current GPS coordinates and attach them to the note. Several factors govern how accurate and precise the location data is, including whether your ipad is equipped with 3G, whether it s connected to WiFi, what lies between the ipad and the open sky, etc. You can view the location data attached to your note by tapping the Details link at the top right of the note viewer: If you d like to view all of the notes in your account that contain location data on a map, tap the More heading on the home screen, then select Places. This will show you a Google Map with each note s location plotted. You can zoom in or out and the notes will form clusters that include the number of notes created in that general area:

11 While it s not currently possible to edit location information in Evernote for ipad, you can edit the location information of any note using Evernote for Windows or Mac. How can I add photos and other images to Evernote? There are several different ways to add images to Evernote: 1 Attaching them to messages that are sent to Evernote. 2 Dragging them from your desktop or the web into the body of a note. 3 Capturing images from your isight camera (Mac only) 4 Taking photos using your iphone or Android phone camera You could also configure your scanner to scan documents directly to Evernote (which could, theoretically, include images). How can I create additional notebooks? If you decide to start segmenting your notes into different notebooks (perhaps based on topic or project), it's easy to do so. If you're using Evernote on the desktop, you can right-click on the 'Notebooks' heading above the notebook list and choose 'New Notebook'. This can also be accomplished by clicking 'New Notebook' under the File menu. If you're using Evernote Web, you can find the 'New Notebook' option in the Edit menu at the bottom of the notebook list. Currently, creating new notebooks is only possible on the web and desktop clients, but this feature is planned for future releases of the mobile versions of Evernote.

12 How can I create audio notes? Several Evernote mobile client applications support the creation of audio notes. Below are detailed instructions for each client application. iphone and ipod Touch Launch the Evernote app and select the Voice option on the New Note screen. After the three-second countdown completes, record your audio note. When you're finished recording, click the Save buton to add the audio clip to a new note. You can also click Stop if you'd like to listen to the recorded audio before saving and re-record as necessary. Android Select "New Note" from the main screen. When the note editor appears, tap the microphone icon at the top right of the screen to begin recording your audio note. When you're finished recording, click the square Stop button to add the audio clip as an attachment to the note. ipad Tap the "New Note" button at the bottom left of the screen, then tap the microphone icon at the top of the note editor. This will immediately begin recording. Once you've finished recording, tap the Stop button. From there, you can either tap Save to add the audio clip to the new note or Discard to discard the audio clip without saving. Blackberry Select "Audio Note" on the main Evernote screen. Select "Record" to being recording and "Stop" when finished recording. Then you can play back the audio or re-record it if necessary. Select "Save Note" from the options menu to add the audio to a new note. The length of an audio note depends on a couple of things: what type of account you have (free or Premium) and if there is any other content in the note besides the audio recording. If there is no other data in the note, the audio clip can be 2 hours long for free users and 4 hours long for Premium users. How do I change my password? You can change your Evernote account password by logging in at evernote.com, clicking the 'Settings' link at the top and looking for the Change Password section on the left hand side. You'll be prompted to enter your current password and enter your new password twice (for security reasons).

13 How to Attach Multiple Images to a Note in Evernote for +ios Evernote for ios allows you to attach multiple photos from the device's Camera Roll in a single action. iphone 1. Tap Camera Roll to open your photo library. 2. If necessary, choose the album from which you'd like to add photos to the note. 3. Tap the small arrow at the bottom left of the screen. 4. Tap each image you would like to attach to the note. Each selected photo will have a small red check mark on it. Tap a photo again to deselect it. 5. Once you've chosen all of the photos you'd like to attach, tap Single Note at the bottom to attach all of the selected photos to the current note. Otherwise, tap Multiple Notes to create one note for each selected photo. Note that a maximum of 35 pictures may be attached to a single note. ipad 1. Tap the Camera Roll icon at the top of the note editor to open your photo library. 2. If necessary, choose the album from which you'd like to add photos to the note. 3. Tap the small arrow at the bottom left of the photo chooser. 4. Tap each image you would like to attach to the note. Each selected photo will have a small red check mark on it. Tap a photo again to deselect it. 5. Tap Add Selected Photos to attach these photos to the current note. Sharing Notes and Notebooks in Evernote for ipad Evernote for ipad is capable of taking advantage of all of Evernote s sharing options including sharing notebooks, sharing individual notes as well as accessing and modifying shared notebooks. Let s look at each of these features individually. Sharing notebooks Notebooks can be shared with individual users or made public so anybody can access them via the Web (if they know the URL). To share a notebook in Evernote for ipad, follow these steps: 1. Tap the Notebooks heading at the top of the home screen.

14 2. Tap and hold the notebook you d like to share. Once it is outlined in gray, tap the Action button at the top right of the screen (the arrow). This will launch the sharing dialog: 3. Here, you can either give the world access to this notebook by tapping Make public at the top right, or you can tap Add people to give them permission to access the notebook. There are a few things to go over in the Add people dialog First, you can type in the address for each person with whom you d like to share the notebook, or you can select them from your contacts. Next, select what level of interaction you d like these users to have. Free users will only have the ability to issue the View only and View only (login required) options, but Premium users can also allow users to modify shared notebooks. Last, type an optional message to your recipients, then tap Invite. Each recipient will receive an inviting them to access the shared notebook. Unsharing notebooks If you decide to stop sharing a notebook with one or more people (or the world, if it s public), you can revoke access to any of the users currently able to view/modify the shared notebook by following these steps:

15 1. Just like in the Sharing notebooks section above, tap and hold the notebook whose sharing settings you d like to modify, then tap the Action button. 2. In the Sharing settings dialog, you ll see either a list of users who have access to the notebook (along with their access level) or, if the notebook is public, a bank of buttons at the top: Disable link, Post link and Copy Link If the notebook is public and you d like to stop sharing it, just tap Disable link to immediately disable public sharing (note that this change will need to be communicated to Evernote Web, so you must be online for this change to take immediate effect). If the notebook is shared with specific people, you ll see a list of their addresses and access levels right above two buttons: Add people and Edit access. To stop sharing this notebook, tap Edit Access. On the next screen, there will be a gray bubble for each user that currently has access; tap the gray bubble (which will then contain a check mark) for each person with whom you d like to stop sharing the notebook. After selecting all of the users, tap Remove to immediately revoke their access to the notebook. Sharing notes Individual notes can be shared from Evernote for ipad using , Facebook or Twitter. To share a note via any of these methods, follow these steps: 1. Open the note you d like to share 2. Tap the Action button at the bottom 3. Select the method by which you d like share the note, then follow the prompts. If you choose Twitter or Facebook, you ll be advised that sharing a note this way will create a public link that anybody can view without logging into Evernote. This is important to remember, and also be aware that it s not currently possible to stop sharing a note using Evernote for ipad (you ll need to do this on either of our desktop clients or using Evernote Web). Viewing shared notebooks Evernote for ipad is able to natively display notebooks that have been shared with your as well as public notebooks which you ve linked to your account. To view these notebooks, tap the Shared heading at the top of the home screen. If the sharer has given your account the ability to modify the notebook, then it will behave just like a normal notebook in your account. If the notebook is public or you have not been given the ability to modify it, then the Edit note button at the bottom (the pencil) will be gone. If you d like to remove a notebook from your shared notebooks, tap and hold the notebook until it is outlined in dark gray, then tap the trash can icon at the top right of the screen.
