2 Create an Account Go to Twitter and complete the sign- up form on the main page. A confirmation will be sent to your address. To complete the process, go to your address and confirm your account. Initially, you will be taken through a quick tutorial. Setting up your account The tutorial will ask you to follow five people initially. Twitter provides a list of those you can follow. Don t worry you do not need to follow these people. 1. In the Search box, type in the Twitter handle or name of someone you would like to follow. 2. Twitter will ask if you want to add more people to your list. You can add at a later date. Click Skip this Step at the bottom of the box. 3. Again, click Skip this Step to avoid going through your contacts list. 4. Upload a photo that will appear on your Twitter profile. If you choose to not upload, a default image will appear. Click Upload Image and locate an image on your computer. Education Services February 23, 13 2
3 5. Type a short bio to help others identify your purpose on Twitter. 6. Click Done. You should now see page with a list of the Twitter messages from those you are following. View a Send a trend/ direct hashtag message Search for users Change settings & profile Return your main page Twitter stats Compose a Tweet Tweets from those you follow Education Services February 23, 13 3
4 Send a Tweet From your Twitter main page, compose a message in two ways. or Your message must not exceed 140 characters. Twitter will keep track of your word count. Compose message Add Link Add a photo Add location Word count Send message Type or paste a link into the message area. If the link is too long, Twitter will shorten the link and not count against the 140 character limit. Education Services February 23, 13 4
5 Add Photo Click the camera icon below in the message area. Choose an image from your computer. Image will appear as a link in your message. Delete a Tweet Move your mouse over your Tweet in the timeline. A menu will appear. Choose Delete. Follow Others How to find those to follow? Conduct a Google Search using keywords. From your Twitter page, click on the username of one you already follow. Click on the followers and following list to view. Click the Follow button on a Twitter user you wish to add to your follow list. Education Services February 23, 13 5
6 From web pages you frequent, look for the Twitter icon. It will take you to their Twitter page. Click the Follow button. View Tweets of Others Once you start following others, you will see their tweets appear on your main Twitter page. Not sure if you are on the main page? Click the Home button in the top right corner. Retweet Retweet: To repost another s tweet. Move your mouse over the Tweet. A menu will appear. Click Retweet. A box will appear with the Tweet. Click the Retweet button. When you Retweet, the original Twitter user s name will appear giving credit. Education Services February 23, 13 6
7 Hashtags Hashtags: A # followed by a keyword or phrases without spaces Many times a user will tweet and provide a hashtag to categorize the tweet and make it easier for others to locate the specific tweet while searching. Follow a hashtag by typing the hashtag into the search box. or Click on a hashtag from a Tweet. Other Options Once you place your mouse over a Tweet, menu options appear for that user and Tweet. Reply: Send a direct message to a user. Expand: View more of the message by pressing expand. View Photo: If a photo is available, click View Photo to view. View Media: If media is attached to the message, click to view. Favorite: Similar to a bookmark, tag your favorite by clicking Favorite in the menu bar. To see your Favorites, a star will appear in your timeline over the Tweet. From your Profile page, click Favorites. Education Services February 23, 13 7
8 Profile Choose the Me tab located in the top toolbar to access your profile. View your Tweets, photos and other account information. To update your profile, choose the gear icon in the top, right corner. Choose Edit Profile. Do not include your location to protect your privacy. Set Account to Private With a private account, users must ask to follow you. Only those that follow you can view your Tweets. Your Tweets cannot be Retweeted as well. 1. Click the gear icon in the top, right corner. 2. Choose Settings. 3. Check Protect my Tweets under Tweet privacy. Education Services February 23, 13 8
9 Mentions Any time another user mentions you in a Tweet, he/she will along with your username. To view any mentions, Click the Mentions tab to view Tweets. You can also mention others in your Tweets by using and another username. You might do this to give credit to another for a great idea. Direct Message A Direct Message is a personal Tweet that only the sender and recipient can view. To view messages, click the gear icon in the top, right corner. Choose Direct Message. View any messages directed to you. To send a direct message, follow the steps above and choose New Message. Education Services February 23, 13 9
10 Inappropriate Tweets A user may receive inappropriate tweets. Such instances include sending an inappropriate link or photo, posting unwanted messages, repeatedly posting the same message, creating a fake account and using with malicious messages. Notify Twitter using the following steps. 1. Go to the user's account profile by clicking on the username. 2. Click on the person icon located below the username. 3. Click for spam. Block a User A blocked user cannot view your profile, follow your tweets or send you direct messages and mentions. 1. Go to the user's account profile by clicking on the username. 2. Click on the person icon located below the username. 3. Choose Block #username. Education Services February 23, 13 10
11 Check for SPAM If you receive a Tweet including a Mention or Direct Message that appears suspicious, do not open the link. If you know the person, send them an asking about the tweet. At times, an account can get hacked and an inappropriate tweet is sent. If it someone you do not know, use the directions above to block and report spam to Twitter.
