3 News Drupal 7 Web Content Management The News feature allows you to create and publish news stories on your site. These news stories are typically displayed in chronological order, displaying a summary of each story and links to read the corresponding full story. Older stories are automatically archived and you may choose to display this archive as well. Creating News Stories 1. Hover over Content in the Administration menu. Move down to Add content and then click the News option that appears. Note: If you do not see News listed under Add content, contact the WCM Support team to request the News feature be activated on your site. To do so, go to 2. Enter a Title for the News story. The Summary sub-tab consists of fields that will make up the story s summary, or teaser. The Summary is what visitors to your site typically see first. They can choose to view the full story by clicking a READ MORE link that will automatically be generated if any of the fields under the Body content sub-tab are also filled in or if an external link is provided. 1 P age
4 3. Including a Summary Image will embed an image on the left-hand side of the teaser. Click Choose file (or Select, depending on the browser you are using) to find the file on your computer. Once selected, click Upload. Note: In the future, you can get rid of the Summary Image by clicking the Remove button that will appear beside it. 4. Enter the text you want to display in your Summary into the Summary field. This will appear to the right of the Summary Image, if used. 5. If you would like your Summary to link to an external webpage instead of a longer story on your own site, provide an External Link. The Title of your story and the Summary Image, if you have included one, will become hyperlinks to the URL (i.e. webpage) specified. The READ MORE link will also direct people to the external link provided. 2 P age
5 The Body content sub-tab consists of fields that will make up the main story, typically accessed by clicking a READ MORE link from the Summary. 6. A secondary title may be added to the story using the Subtitle field. 7. The author of the News story may be added by filling in the Author field. 3 P age
6 8. An Image can also be inserted into the story. To include an image in the full story that will be embedded on the left-hand side (with any text appearing to its right), click Choose file (or Select, depending on the browser you are using) to find the file on your computer. Once selected, click Upload. Note: If you uploaded an image in the Summary, it will not appear in the main body of the full story. 9. A Caption may be added directly below the Image. It will appear in a grey box, just like the note immediately above this sentence. 10. A Photo Credit may be added below the Image as well. It will appear in the same grey box as the Caption, if used. In that case, the Caption appears first, followed by the Photo Credit. 4 P age
7 11. Finally, the Body is where the full story is entered, much like the Body in a Basic page is where the content of that page is entered. It uses the same text editor as the Body field in a Basic page. 5 P age
8 The Additional options sub-tab provides extra options relating to dates and ways of categorizing your stories. 12. Depending on how you choose to display News stories on your site, as described in the Displaying News Stories section below, the Date settings may or may not apply. (In fact, only the start date can be used if you wish the story to be published with a date other than the current date the start/end time and end date will never apply.) 13. Type allows you to group News stories together and determine where they can be viewed on your site. For assistance with setting up the Type option, please contact WCM Support at Keywords can be used to flag stories. You can then set up Views that will only display stories with those Keywords (for more information, see the Displaying News Stories section below). Enter any relevant Keywords. Keywords that have been entered in the past will appear as you type. If that is the case, click on the relevant option that appears. 15. If you want a News story to appear at the top of your list of stories, go to Publishing options at the bottom of the page and check off Sticky at top of lists. (For more information about this, see the Displaying News Stories section beginning on the next page.) 16. Once you have set all your options and reviewed all the fields, click the Save button at the bottom of the page. 6 P age
9 Displaying News Stories In order for people visiting your site to see the News stories you create, you must specify where to display them. This is done with Views, which are found in Panel pages. Note: The section assumes you are familiar with the use of Panel pages and that you have already created a Panel page on your site. To learn more about Panel pages, visit Under the Training heading, you can find documentation and support by clicking the Web Content Management link. 1. On the Panel page, go to the Panel content tab. 2. Find the region you wish to add your News stories to and click on that region s gear icon, found on the left-hand side. 3. Click Add content. 7 P age
10 4. Click Views. 5. From the options presented, select News. 6. Now you must select which Display of the News View to use on your Panel page. a. Master and Home Date Recent News: These options should not be selected. Note: In most of the remaining Displays outlined below (b to e), News stories will be sorted by date, with the most recent on top (and those marked as Sticky at top of lists above all others). Horizontal lines separate individual stories. Each story will display its Title, Date, Summary, and will be followed by a READ MORE link (which links to the full story i.e. the Body content). 8 P age
11 b. Page: This option should be used with the Single column Panel layout (found in the Category called Columns: 1). It is used as a News Archive. The title at the top of this Display will be News Archive and it will display all your News stories up to 15 per page with a Pager appearing at the bottom if there are more than 15 stories in the archive. The stories are sorted by date, in descending order (i.e. with the most recent on top). 9 P age
12 c. Recent News: The title at the top of this Display will be Recent News. This option will display the five most recent News stories, sorted by date, in descending order. If News stories have been made Sticky at top of lists, those stories will appear (sorted by date, in descending order) above any stories that are not sticky. d. Top News: The title at the top of this Display will be Top News. This option will only display News stories that have been made Sticky at top of lists. Only the most recent sticky story is displayed at any one time. e. Simple Listing: This option is not commonly used. The title at the top of this Display will be News. This option will display the three most recent News stories, sorted by date, in descending order. No formatting will appear, including images. The Date does not appear in this Display. 10 P age
13 7. Once you have selected the Display for this View, click Continue. 8. If, when creating News stories, you enter Keywords under the Additional options sub-tab for the purpose of grouping certain kind of stories together, you can choose to have only the stories with those Keywords appear in your view. Enter the Keywords used in the story into the Arguments field seen in the image below. 9. Click Finish. 10. Once you Save your Panel page, the View selected will be displayed on the Panel page and the relevant News stories you add will appear there automatically. 11 P age
