In order to achieve this unit, candidates must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they have met all of the assessment objectives. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. They will need to be made available, together with witness statements and any other supporting documentation, to the OCR Visiting Moderator when required. Centres must confirm to OCR that the evidence produced by candidates is authentic. An OCR Centre Authentication Form is provided in the Centre Handbook and includes a declaration for assessors to sign. It is a requirement of the QCA Common Criteria for all Qualifications that proof of authentication is received. OCR Level 3 Nationals in ICT 3

4 Guidance on assessment and evidence requirements For this unit candidates are being assessed on their DTP skills and are required to use DTP software. It is not acceptable to use Word Processing software. Candidates will be expected to plan, draft, develop and then produce a range of documents eg newsletter, flyer, brochure, for a given scenario. The candidates should be provided with a scenario and a design brief from a client which covers one organisation so that corporate image and consistent house style can be considered by the candidate. The candidate must use the results of their review to plan their publication. For Assessment Objective 1, candidates need to make clear the purpose of each of their documents and the intended target audience. Candidates must produce design sketch plans, for each document, which includes evidence that the candidate has researched and evaluated different elements from a range of professionally produced publications from a range of different organisations. The design sketches can be hand-drawn or created on a computer but must be detailed enough to match the final publication. The design sketches must also consider house style, layout, corporate image and the content of the pages. The publications should include a variety of graphics some of which the candidate will need to create themselves. Candidates must evidence their research by stating their sources in a bibliography of their report in Assessment Objective 6. For Assessment Objective 2, candidates will need to create and customise templates. The templates must meet the design brief and must be saved appropriately. Screenshot evidence must be produced to show that the publication has been saved as a template. Candidates must indicate the elements that they have included in their template eg the margins,, grids, styles used. The styles could be headings, sub-headings, body text, footnotes, bullets, captions, headers/footers, tables, lists. For Assessment Objective 3, candidates need to create a the documents based on their design sketch plans in Assessment Objective 1. The candidate will need to collect elements to be included in the publication all elements do not have to be created by the candidate. The candidate can amend any of the text files in a text editor and manipulate the graphics in a graphic editing package. Candidates will also need to include at least one automated task. This assessment objective also includes the manipulation of images. Candidates will create complex shapes which are then used where appropriate within the document. They will combine objects to create more complex shapes. The term layering means to alter the order of overlapping objects, whilst grouping implies combining one or more objects together. All candidates will need to layer at least one graphic and text frame by overlaying a text frame over an image. For Assessment Objective 4, candidates are required to review the accuracy of their work and make changes as necessary. They must then print out one draft copy and proof read this, add any proof reading correction signs and make amendments as required. A final proof copy will then be printed. Higher level candidates will need to produce an additional final proof will need to be printed showing colour separations and crop marks. Candidates will need to show evidence of saving the publication in a suitable format. For Assessment Objective 5, candidates are required to produce a written report describing the final production stage using commercial printing process. The report will also include an evaluation of the finished publication in terms of; use of colour, meeting the design brief, what accessibility options, legislative constraints, sourced text and images meet the design brief, how fit 4 OCR Level 3 Nationals in ICT

5 for purpose is the publication. The report will also outline the stages between producing a proof copy and the final printing of the publication by a commercial printer. Assignments may be provided by the centre or produced by the candidate. These assignments must relate to one business context and provide the opportunity for all the assessment objectives to be met in full. Signposting to Key Skills The unit contains opportunities for developing the Key Skill, and possibly for generating portfolio evidence, if teaching and learning is focused on that aim. Assessing staff will need to check each candidate s evidence against the specifications to ensure all evidence requirements have been met. Additional evidence may also be required.
