1 Using Templates to Make Labels You can create all kinds of labels in Word Labels aren t just for file folders. You can make your own return address labels, or you can make address labels for everyone on your holiday list. To find label templates, click on the File tab, choose New, then Labels, where you will find a variety of labels to choose from. Press the Download button and you are ready to make the document your own. If you want to save the label file, name it and save it in your documents folder. Notice that you can see what each label will look like when it s printed, along with the corresponding Avery label number, so you can purchase the correct size label.

2 Making Your Own Labels Go to the Create group of the Mailings Tab, where you will see Envelopes and Labels icons. Click on the Labels icon, and you will get the Envelopes and Labels dialog box. In the Address box, type what you want to appear on your label. In spite of the fact that the box is labeled Address, you can enter any kind of text. At the bottom of the Envelopes and Labels box, click on Options. Here you can choose the type of label you want. Before you start making your labels, decide what size label is best for your project. When you buy your labels (Avery is the best-known brand) they will have a number you will be able to match with the template in Word. In the Label Options dialog box, choose the product number of the label you want. Notice that when you select a label number, label information, such as type, dimension and page size appears on the Label Options dialog box. Click OK. Now you re back to the Envelopes and Labels dialog box. Now select the printer option. Click New Document. The next thing you see will be a document with your labels the size you specified, arranged in a table. If you want to adjust the font size, color or other label element, select the entire document and make your changes. Now you re ready to print your labels. It s a good idea test your label document by first printing it on a piece of plain paper before you put a sheet of label in your printer.

3 Using Templates to Make Business Cards Go through the same process you did when you made your labels. However, after you click on label options, instead of selecting an address label, choose one of the business card formats. As you did with the address label, when you make your choice and click OK, you will see a page of business cards. Notice that both the address labels and business cards are laid out using tables, which you also used when you made your calendar.

4 Inserting Symbols Sometimes even with all the fonts that are available on your computer, you d like to use something special that you can t find on your keyboard. You may want to add small graphic elements, or symbols to your labels, business cards or other documents. Modern computer typefaces have accented characters to use if you re typing in a foreign language. You ll also find ligatures (two letters joined into one), typographic and mathematic symbols, and legal marks. All these characters can be found in Symbols. You ll find the Symbols button in the Insert Tab. Click on Symbols and you ll get these dialog boxes. Almost every typeface on your computer has more characters than you would think. You know about using the shift key to make capital letters and some symbols because they re on your keyboard. With each font you select, you ll find more symbol choices. If you want to use any of these symbols, select one, then press the Insert button. You can change the size of these symbols just as you can change the size of letters of the alphabet. Glyphs are another word for symbols. The term, dingbat, is a holdover from the world of hot type printing, and means a decorative ornament. Wingdings and Webdings, found in your Font list are made up entirely of glyphs, numbers, arrows, signs, symbols and dingbats.

5 Finding You can use this function to search for text in your document. Or, use it to find and replace text, text formatting, or even punctuation marks. Go to the Editing group in the Home tab. (Look for the binocular icon on the right-hand side of the tab.) Click on the little triangle. Now you ll see a navigation pane pops up on the left side of your document. In the window with the magnifying glass, enter the item you want to search for. For more options, click on the triangle to the right of the magnifying glass. If you choose Advanced Find in this list of options, you will get the Find and Replace dialog box. Click on the Find tab, and enter the text you want to search for in the Find what box. Click the Replace tab. In the Replace with box, enter the replacement text. Then either click Replace, if you want to replace it just one time, or Replace All, if you want to replace all the words in your document. A shortcut to get to the find function while you re in your document: Press CTRL + F. To end a search, press the escape key.

6 More to Insert Inserting a Hyperlink A hyperlink can connect your document with a Web page. First type or select the text that will be linked. Click on the Insert tab, where you will see Hyperlink in the Links group. Click Hyperlink to get the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, and then type the Web address (URL) of the link. Inserting a Watermark A watermark can be a logo, some text or a picture that appears faintly in back of the text in your document. Go to the Page Layout tab and click on the Watermark button. Select one of the watermark templates, make your own custom one, or browse on your computer or online for an appropriate image.

7 Exercises Make your own return address labels. After you ve clicked on the Start Button, choose New Document. Select a label template Enter your address. When your sheet of addresses page is on your screen, save the file. (Click on the Word Button, select Save As and name it.) If you think you can use the file on your computer at home, either the file to yourself or transfer it using a portable drive, such as a thumb drive. Use the label process to make stickers other than address labels. They might say Happy New Year, or Par Avion, or Drink Tea! You decide. Then be creative and see how your text looks using different fonts. Try using a special character on your label. Or, make your own business cards using a template. Consider making a modern version of a calling card. Experiment with the Find and Replace function. Insert a hyperlink or a watermark.
