Contents At a glance: Title pages, headers Content pages Templates as a design foundation Corporate design guidelines: Designing the header and title page Newsletters make it possible to inform customers and DB employees in a compact format and to reach a large number of interested readers. They are distributed as printed copies or PDFs. You can find more information on the digital variant of newsletters sent as s here: HTML Newsletters. Templates with five different title page variations according to business division are available. InDesign templates are used for professional printed productions. Word templates are also available for internal newsletters. Designing content pages, text modules Page 1
At a glance: Title pages, headers The following characteristic design characteristics are used in the design of headers of newsletter title pages: The brand logo (1) serves to clearly identify the sender and is placed within defined margins at the upper right of the color pane or in the logo box (2). Besides the brand logo, the color pane in the business division color (3) identifies the sender. The panes bleed to the right and left. When using large-format images it is possible to place the title on a transparent pane in the division color (6) above the image. Optional title images (4) can be used in the header area. The DB corner element (7) is present on every title page as a visual constant. The newsletter title (5) with the characteristic bold-fine contrast stands on the color pane and can be supplemented if needed by a subheader, e.g. information for employees or customer information. When a marking (8) is necessary, it is placed on the right-hand side beneath the header in the white pane. Page 2
Content pages The clearspace (1) at the upper format edge has a defined, unchangeable height and cites the brand-typical logo cleaspace. A color stripe in the division color (2) and the baseline in the footer area (3) clasp the content. The majority of the text modules, e.g. headlines (4) and body copy (5) are in DB News. For eye-catching introductory copy (6) and other text modules, use DB Sans. Images (8) and color panes can bleed. Color panes (9) can be used to emphasize text information. Whenever possible, the body copy begins after the main headline and with each new article with a drop initial (7). Templates as a design foundation Template files are available for newsletter design. Their use is absolutely recommended. The templates already include sample headers with brand logos and appropriate sender identification. All copy elements are likewise included as samples and can be adapted individually according to your needs. Templates for downloading can be found here: Templates for Newsletters Page 3
Corporate design guidelines: The following corporate design rules introduce only newsletter-specific design elements and their special features. You can find general information on the DB typical design features under Print Media and Basic Elements: Logos and Markings Markings Color Typeface Transparencies Designing the header and title page The height of the color and image panes (1) and font size of the newsletter title are variable and can be changed when needed. Placement of the logos is predefined. Appropriate samples are already included in the templates. The newsletter title (2) is set in bold-fine contrast in DB Head Black and DB Head Light. The samples include two font sizes for short and long newsletter titles, as a rule the font sizes are flexible. The font for an optional subheadline and subsequent newsletter details (3) (date, edition number) is DB Sans Bold. Page 4
Designing content pages, text modules The text live areas of the title and content pages are identical. Newsletters use the fonts of our corporate font DB Type. Headlines (1) and subheadlines are set in DB Sans Compressed Bold The body copy font (2) is DB News. Individual words or short phrases can, like the introductory copy, be emphasized in DB Sans Bold. Column and section titles (3) are in DB Head Black. After headlines and with each new article, the body copy begins whenever possible with a drop initial (4) over two lines in DB Sans Condensed Bold. Captions (5) use DB Sans Condensed. The footer line (8) includes the newsletter title in DB Head Black and DB Head Light. The edition number and page number (9) are set in DB Sans Condensed Regular. The end of an article in the body copy is marked by a 2x2 mm square termination character (10). To emphasize information individually, the copy can be placed on a color pane (6). Additionally, text boxes (7) with header bars for headlines are available. Use of other header and copy font styles, as e.g. in brochure content pages, is possible. With any changes or adjustments, make sure the overall look is uniform and makes sense. If needed, pictographs designed specially for publications can be used. Lists with bullet points use the typical red squares. Page 5
