1 I N T R O D U C T I O N Collect Relevant Demographics Here we will collect demographics at the local level! At this point you should have identified and mapped a prioritized brownfield site. We will now need to collect some important demographic data, which can be required, or at the very least useful, for a proper site assessment. By the end of this tutorial, you will have social and economic data that can support the brownfield redevelopment process. This data can potentially quantify or qualify the impact of redevelopment and why it's a needed project. Furthermore, it can be used to support a strong narrative for your community. 2 Start by visiting the Data Warehouse. Search form for the data warehouse The Data Warehouse enables you to search by geography, file type, file category, and file name. Let's start by searching at the local level. Throughout this field guide, we've been interested in Pocahontas, AR, so let s search by that city. Set Geography to City/Trade Area and find our town, then click Go!. Change geography to "City/Trade Area" Locate Pocahontas (or your site) Click "Go!" to start the search

3 Search Results It looks like we have 83 results. We could spend hours going through the Data Warehouse and exploring individual files, but for now we will only grab a few datasets. The second search result is the American Community Survey s Population Sumary. Click on PDF to view this dataset. Click PDF to preview the document Google Drive's preview mode Scan the file and take note that it has information for Population, Households, Housing Units,... Educational Attainment,... Population, Households, Housing Units,

4 Education... Household Income,... Income... and Poverty Status. Poverty Click the download icon at the top to add the file to your computer. Click here to download the file Now go back to the Data Warehouse and change the "Category" to Demographics and the "File Name" to Demographic and Income Profile. Click Go!. New search

5 1 search result here If data is available for your town, click on PDF to examine the file. You will notice, this file contains information for the years 2010, 2013, and It also has trends and compares your area to the state and national levels, which can be very useful as it adds context. Summary data with trends Click the download icon at the top to add the file to your computer. Click here to download Next, go back to the warehouse, and change the "Category" to Administrative and the "File Name" to City Limits. Click Go!. Changing the search options again

6 Search results The description of our results tells us that it has information for population in 2000 and 2010 which means we can see a brief look at population changes in our area. Click "View Table" to examine the data Click to view the table Data from the table "LMI_Percent" represents the percentage of the population qualified as Low to Moderate Income, which is often useful when applying for grants from the federal government. Go back to the Data Warehouse search results and click the Download CSV button to add this to your computer. Click here to download We have been collecting tabular data for our site, but not let's look at some spatial data. Change the "Geography" of our site to County, "Category" to Administrative, and "File Name" to Census Block Groups. Then click "Go!".

9 Click to visualize feature information If you go back to the Data Warehouse search results, you will see an option to download a KML. Click here to download a KML This should start a download and you will now have a Google Earth file you can share and add to your demographics inventory. Your new KML! You could easily continue to find more data for your site, but what is important now is that you know how to use the data warehouse and you have demographic data.
