5 Chapter 1: Product Images Product images appear on detail pages and within product, category, and hybrid browse widgets on your website. Images are added to a product's attributes either through a data feed or through the Inventory interface. There are three types of product images. 1. The Main image is the primary image for a product and the default image of the product on a detail page. For detail page display, the image is resized to a small format when a product is first shown. Customers can click the small format image to open the image at full size. Alternate images are displayed in miniature form below the main image on most detail pages. Clicking an alternate image causes it to replace the main image on the detail page. Swatch images represent a color or cloth pattern for the product displayed. Swatch images appear in various places within a product's detail page. Prepare Product Images Every product on Amazon needs one or more product images. The primary image of your item is called the MAIN. The MAIN image represents an item in search results and browse pages, and is the first image customers see on an item s detail page. Choose images that are clear, easy to understand, information-rich, and attractively presented. Images must accurately represent the product and show only the product that s for sale, with minimal or no propping. Images are very important to customers, so quality matters. There are several ways to add a product image to Amazon.com: Use the Add a Product feature when you create a new product Use the Manage Inventory feature to edit an existing product's data Specify the product image URL in an inventory file Image Types and Uses Parent SKU main image: Generally used for search and browse pages only. Child SKU main image: Used for the product detail page. This must only show the product being sold. 1-1

6 1-2 Alternate images: Should display different sides of the product and/or details that aren't visible in the MAIN image, or the product in use. Swatches: Thumbnail images used on the right side of some detail pages for showing a color or close-up of fabric or material. These must exist for all Child SKUs and must show only the color or fabric of the specific color/product being sold.

7 Chapter 2: Adding an Image Inventory enables you to enter several images for each product in your catalog. (Refer to the Product Images section for details around different kinds of images.) The instructions below enable you to select images from any location you prefer (for example, your local machine, your network, etc). 1. From Seller Central, on the Inventory tab click Manage Inventory. The Search Catalog page appears. The Basic Search option is selected by default. 2. Enter the search criteria, and click Search. The search results appear. 3. To the right of the product you want to add an image, click Edit. The saved product information on the Product page appears. 4. Click the Images tab. 5. Click Upload below the preferred empty dashed box for the image type (main, alternate, or swatch) you want to add. The image path dialog box appears. 6. Enter the image file path and name, or click Browse to select the image file. You can also select the Submit a URL option, and enter the image URL. 7. Make your changes and click Continue. The Images tab appears. The uploaded image is displayed in the relevant image box. Notes: Below an uploaded image, you can click Replace to change an image. 8. Click Reload Images to refresh all of the images for the selected product. 9. You can also upload images in bulk using either CSV or XML files. 2-1

9 Chapter 3: Deleting an Image 1. From Seller Central, on the Inventory tab click Manage Inventory. The Manage Inventory page appears. The Basic Search option is selected by default. 2. Enter the search criteria, and click Search. The search results appear. 3. To the right of the product you want to edit, click Edit. The saved product information on the Product page appears. 4. Click the Images tab. 5. Click Delete below the image you want to remove. A confirmation dialog box appears. 6. Click Delete. Note: Reload Images refreshes all of the images for the selected product. 3-1

11 Chapter 4: Replacing an Image 1. From Seller Central, on the Inventory tab click Manage Inventory. The Manage Inventory page appears. The Basic Search option is selected by default. 2. Enter the search criteria, and click Search. All relevant search results appear. 3. To the right of the image you want to edit, click Edit. The saved product information on the Product page appears. 4. Click the Images tab. 5. Click Replace below the image you want to replace. The image path dialog box appears. 6. Enter the image file path and name, or click Browse to select the image file. You can also select the Submit a URL option, and enter the image URL. 7. Make your changes and click Continue. The Images tab appears. The uploaded image s displayed in the relevant image box. Note: Click Reload Images to refresh all of the images for the selected product. 4-1

13 Chapter 5: Product Image Requirements Product Image Requirements For your product images to appear properly on your Amazon Webstore, the images must meet the following requirements: Format What kind of image can I upload? Can I upload an animated image? What are the dots per inch resolution? What are the pixel restrictions? How does the zoom feature work? Other What kind of computer format? What are the restrictions? JPEG (.jpg), TIFF (.tif), or GIF (.gif) format; JPEG preferred Image must be a photograph No animated images 72 dots per inch resolution At least 500 pixels on each side; 3000 pixels permitted (consistently sized images are strongly recommended) To activate zoom: between 1280 and 3000 pixels on the longest side; to take full advantage of zoom we recommend at least 2560 pixels on the longest side srgb color mode 8bits per channel PC or Mac format No spaces in the file names The following characters are not permitted in file names: "[", "]", "*", "<", ">", "?", ":", " " TABLE 1. 14 Effective product images stimulate customer imagination and inspire them to buy your products. Evaluate your image quality against these guidelines: The image matches the product description in size, color The product is recognizable The image is a photo and not a drawing The photo is taken at a flattering angle The product is focused and well-lit Close-up shots are not obscured by highlights or shadows The product occupies at least 80% of the image area The entire product is depicted in the image The image includes only what the customer will be receiving. (Accessories that are not part of the product should not be shown.) The image displays the exact quantity of items the customer will be receiving. (For example, if the product is one mixing bowl, don't include other bowls in different sizes and colors in the photo.) Backgrounds are simple and clean and do not to distract from the product - ideally, the background is pure white. Images do not have borders, text, or other decorations 5-2
