1 Overview of Plan for Redesign & Development of New Website City Council Workshop August 1, 2017

2 Current website sees approximately 4.8 million page views and 1 million visitors per year Average daily use is 16,000 page views and 5,210 visitors It is the primary vehicle in which city departments share information with residents and the general public (announcements, events, policies, news and general information) Increasingly, residents look online as first to keep informed about their city

3 Why does Glendale need a new website? Current design is extremely dated looking and does not show a polished and professional image of Glendale Navigation is confusing and illogical The software used to maintain the site is archaic, difficult to use, limited in availability to potential editors no longer supported by the manufacturer and unstable (cont.)

4 Why does Glendale need a new website? (cont.) The server backend of the website is nearing end of life and will not be supported in two years. As a result of this, the current website will not function in two years The site suffers from content bloat. Years and years of information dumping has left the site with vast amounts of irrelevant and dated content Because of the above, performing a site search, yields numerous amounts of dated results

5 Information Gathering for New Website Workshops Timeframe: August 2016 through February 2017 Small Group Workshops were held for the website representatives from every department/division in the city Departments were paired with other departments that were dissimilar to facilitate discussion and comment from outside the silo

Brainstorming: Asked groups to think about what kinds of information they would be looking for on the website as it relates to the departments represented in their workshop group Clearing Clutter: Asked department to review their current content and think about what is really needed so they could begin to think of the new site as a blank canvas

Content Wishes: Asked departments to narrow content to several important items and asked them to suggest what additional information might be appropriate in dropdowns (sub-items) Other Websites/Design Wish List: Asked departments to look at other websites and to see what inspires. Favorite ideas were brought back to the groups to get feedback and comment

Department were asked to do a rough draft of all of their content and design wishes based on the results of the workshop process Got sign-off from all department heads, who reviewed the results of their representative s wish list for their respective departments

11 Intranet Current GNN intranet site is dated, confusing and under utilized Shares the same backend and software as the internet site and therefore the same issues Communication to employees is a priority of all high performing organizations
