1 Building Resource Builder cases: Case Builder template Brief instructions Log into Resource Builder. Create a resource by selecting Case Builder template. Name your new case. Go to Pages and add content: background content to LHS learning resources to RHS Check case in Student View. Complete settings: Unit of Study? Published? Indexing terms for searching. 1. Copy a template Log in to Resource Builder at elearn.vetsci.usyd.edu.au/resource_builder/. You will be taken to the Resource Administration page, where you will see a table of your cases and a selection of templates. In Create a Resource on the right hand side Select Case Builder from the available templates (Fig 1). You will get a new copy of the Case Builder template to fill with content for your new case. You can then click Go to your new copy or wait a few seconds to be taken there. Figure 1: Resource admin page 2. Name your case You will be taken to the Resource Settings page, where you can name your case and change/add any settings. You should at least name your case, as this will make it easier for you to search for it

2 later. Otherwise your case will be named by default Case Builder (copy). The status will automatically be Editing at this stage. Click to save your new case name. Under Settings on the left hand side, you can add various details that will help make your case searchable. You can also assign a unit of study to the case if you wish to share with others in your work group. Click details/uos/mesh if you want to add details now, but you can also return and do this later. Figure 2: Resource settings 3. Go to Pages You will see a heading Pages in settings below the case details. Click on the link to Consultation 1; this is where you go to enter all the material for your case. Note: If your case is not of a consultation type, don t worry about this heading. It can very easily be changed once you start adding your content! Figure 3: Going to your new page

3 4. Go to content pane You will be taken to a page (called Page View) containing blocks in two columns. On the left hand side there is a Case Details block; on the right there are blocks for the support material for your case, e.g. path reports, photos, comments etc. The page blocks are headed in dark red. Within the page blocks there are grey content panes. If you would like to change the name of the page from Consultation 1, click Edit Layout (top right of page view). For adding left hand side content, which is typically a background and what you want the students to do, click on the link inside the grey content pane. This will take you to a content building page (see below). Figure 4: Page view of a case 5. Build your content! Once in a content building page, you can add all the text and pictures for each section of the case. By default the left block sections are labeled scenario, patient and task ; this is where you will put all your introductory information. You can change these headings to something more meaningful to your case or leave them as they are. To change a heading, simply change the name of the content section (see figure 5). You will see a white area within the content pane with a small P to indicate paragraph. The text is added by simply typing in this white strip or by copy/paste from elsewhere. Each time you press enter you will start a new paragraph. You can make a heading by selecting some text and clicking one of the headings in the style panel at the right hand side. You can add pictures from OLIVER (Vet Science users) or from your album. To use the album, click the upload icon; you will be taken to a window where you can browse to add items to the album. You can then click on the thumbnails within the album and add them either directly as an image or a link. To add images from OLIVER, click the OLIVER/web icon and add the URL for the image you want to add (see Figure 6).

4 By default the images on the left hand side will appear in line with your text. If you want any of them to appear as pop ups, highlight the text, go to upload an image, and select Create Link to Image, rather than Insert Image. Then before you save, select the Pop up Content box at the bottom of the content page. To add a link, type the text for your link (e.g. click here ). Highlight the text, then click the link icon in the top panel. A URL box will appear, Add the address for your link and a caption (optional), then submit. Your text will be linked to the address. Remember to save your content! The save button is below the title and also below the content pane. Continue the process, adding content for Patient and Task, building background and introductory information about your case. You can change any of these headings to make them more meaningful to your cases. There is an excellent and comprehensive guide to building content click the link below the save button. 5 Figure 6: Adding images 6. Add resources to the right side page block After saving your material you will be taken back to the Page View. You can now add learning resources to help the students solve your case. Examples of these might be comments, Path reports, photos of lesions or test results, links to web pages and/or forms to fill in. These resources are placed in the right page blocks and appear to the student as links. The right block template is empty you need to Add New Content for each resource that you add. In Edit Page view, you will see Add New Content in the grey header panels. Click here and you will be taken to your new content pane. The process for adding your resources on the right page blocks is the same as for the left block, except that the program assumes you want to add pop ups. This means you need to tick Create pop up content at the bottom of the content pane, near the Save button. If you do not tick this box you will get an error message instead of your content! It is possible to keep adding new blocks to the right hand side, depending on how many resources you want to add to the case. To add more blocks, click the red panel ( Add block to right placeholder ), give the block a name and save. To add a new piece of content or a resource to a block, either copy the content you have made, using the small clone icon (see figure 8) or click Add New Content again. Every new bit of content that you add in a right hand side block will appear as a link to the student.

View your case in Student View At any point during the process, you can look at your case from the point of view of an end user by clicking Student View. This is available in Edit Page (top left hand side) or in Edit or Copy Resource (top right hand side). This allows you to work through the case exactly as if you were a student.

7 8. Important points to remember: History, background to the problem, your expectations etc. on the left hand side. Resources (links to pop ups) to help solve the case on the right hand side. You can change the headings to reflect your subject matter. Always remember to save. Remember to tick the pop up box when you re saving the left hand side content. There is an excellent guide to creating content available from inside the content editing pane. This is all there is to it. Happy Resource Building!
