Working with the Template We designed the template to be useful, attractive and responsive on mobile devices. Use all the parts that you want and delete the parts you don t. The template gives you three options for posting material and organizing content. This option features 1. A responsive design for loading your syllabus file or text entry and course information. 2. Quick links to instructor and student resources 3. Mini course calendar 4. A course events listing autogenerated from Canvas course assignments and calendar events All courses should post a syllabus file or text and course information on this page. To add your syllabus file, insert text and post course information, click the Edit Syllabus Description button. Option 1: Syllabus home page
Edit the Syllabus 1. When you begin to edit, the first thing you ll notice is that the layout changes from horizontal to vertical, this is normal. 2. The template is formatted in tables so that text and content is easier for you to enter and edit. 3. In editing mode, you have the option to affect the text with very basic text editing styles, like making the text bold and italic, indenting text and making lists. You will also have the option to insert dynamic content, like tables, links, pictures, equations and videos. 4. The very first order of business is to delete the placeholder text on the page. Highlight it with your mouse and click delete. 5. With your curser in the space where the file is to be placed, select the Files tab in the Inset Content into the Page sidebar. 6. The file name and link will then be activated inserted and activated in the syllabus page. 7. If you so choose, you can type in any text label and turn that manually entered text into a file link. 8. If you prefer to use plain text instead of a file link, enter where the placeholder text is displayed. 9. To insert your course information which is synced to the Extension School registrar, place your curser in the empty table cell below the Information header. 10. Click the i icon from the editing toolbar. 11. From the popout options check the information you d like to display (all are checked by default). 12. Click insert. 13. A large grey box will appear on your page. 14. When finsihed updating the manually entered syllabus information click Update Syllabus at the bottom of the page.
Option 2: Course Information front page This option features 1. A responsive layout 2. A banner image, which you may use or replace 3. Linked buttons that go directly to additional pages for adding your syllabus, teaching staff bios and course resources 4. The text on these buttons and the pages to which they is linked are fully customizable 5. Quick links to instructor and student resources This option gives you some design elements while still being simple and straightforward. To make changes to this page, click the Edit button. Option 3: Organized Content front page This option features 1. A responsive layout 2. A banner image, which you may use or replace 3. Linked buttons that go directly to additional pages, one page for each week with optional places to link out to assignments and upload readings. 4. Linked buttons that go directly to additional pages for adding your syllabus, teaching staff bios and course resources 5. The text on these buttons and the pages to which they are linked is fully customizable 6. An optional modules setup for all 16 weeks This is the most robust and fully mapped out template option. Before you begin working, decide which parts of this option are useful for you. To make changes to this page, click the Edit button.
Making Option 2 or 3 your home page 1. From the current home page, click the sidebar option Choose Home Page 2. From the popout window, select the option Pages Front Page 3. In the template, Option 2 Course Information is default 4. If you are done, click Save 5. To change the front page to Option 3 Organized Content select the Change link 6. In the next window, switch the default front page by selecting the gear icon 7. Choose Use as Front Page from the dropdown options 8. Repeat steps 1-4 If you wish to use other Canvas tools as your front page or revert back to a different front page, you may choose another available option. For more info on the Home Page options, take a break, and grab the How to Set Your Home Page handout. Note that pages intended to be the front page must first be published and accessible to students. Editing the Home Pages Click Edit near the top right of your screen to begin working on the home page Removing or replacing the banner image 1. Select the image 2. Hit delete to remove the image 3. Select the Images tab from the Insert Content into this page sidebar. 4. Click Find images on flickr creative commons and search for an image for your course (all choices in this search will comply with copyright laws) 5. Or click Upload a new image to browse your computer s files
Decide whether to keep the buttons If you keep the buttons, you will need to add content to each of the pages that the buttons lead to as well as publish them. If you don t want some or all of the buttons Highlight them with your mouse and delete them. If you do want the buttons Leave them alone. Changing the button text can break the links. If you want to change the text, and need to relink, ask for help. Save Your Work To save the changes that you just made, click save on the bottom right of your screen. Adding Content to Linked Pages Pick a button and click it to navigate to the page Once you re there, click edit near the top right of the screen. Choose the parts of the page template you want and delete the rest If you plan on keeping the Assignments section of the weekly pages, take a break now and head over to the Make Grading Easier table to get all of your assignments set up. Then come back and we ll help you link to them on this page. Or delete the page template and add content to your page You ll see a text box. Go ahead and type in it. There s a formatting toolbar that works a lot like MS Word.
Add images if you want This works just like adding images to your home page. The image will show up wherever you put your cursor. Look to the right side of your screen and click Images. Then click Find images on flickr creative commons and search for an image for your course (all choices in this search will comply with copyright laws). Or click Upload a new image from your computer and click Upload. Make sure you keep copyright in mind. Add files if you want Adding files works similarly to adding images. The link to the file will show up where you put your cursor. This is a great way to add readings. Look to the right side of your screen and click Files. Then click Upload a new file from your computer. And click Upload Link to other parts of Canvas if you want This is how you get links to the assignments you ve already created if you re using the template. Adding links works like adding files or images. The link to the other part of Canvas will show up where you put your cursor.. Look to the right side of your screen and click Links. You ll see a list of dropdown menus for items like quizzes and assignments. Everything you have already built in Canvas and published will be on one of these lists. Click the item you want. When you re done click Save You ll find it on the bottom right of your screen
When you re completely done, click Publish You ll see it near the top of your screen after you have saved the page. Repeat these steps until all pages have content You re done! Now all the buttons on your home page should work. Add additional content to your Weeks Want more than just one page in your weekly content? The pages are actually set up in Modules, which is Canvas organization system. Head over to the Organizing Your Course table to learn more. Note: If you change the name of the Weekly Pages, it will break your buttons. If you want to change the name, ask for help.
