3 Getting Started Logging In When you want to begin working with content in the Math website, you will need to login. To do so, click Log in, located at the bottom of any page on the Math website OR click MathWeb If you are not already logged into WebAccess, you will be asked to do so. Editor Permissions To be able to edit and create pages on the Math website, you will need to be assigned the role of General Editor. To request this role, please contact one of the Personnel Administrators. Section Access When creating or editing Math Pages for sections on the Math website, you need to be assigned to those sections. Sections are as follows: About Graduate Undergraduate Research Visitors MathWeb Business Content for a given section can be edited by other General Editors with access to the same section. 3

4 Creating Content Preparing to Create Content After Logging In, click the User account link at the bottom of any page on the Math website. Clicking the link will take you to your user account page. To get started on creating content, click Add Content. Depending on your level of access on the Math website, you will have access to different Content Types. Content Types Article Use articles for time-sensitive content like news, press releases or blog posts. Basic Page Committee Committee Member Event Type Faculty Document Math Page Use Basic pages for Math microsites (eg, Dynamical Systems, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics). Use this type for creating committees. Use this type for creating a committee s members. User this type for creating event types (seminars, colloquiums, etc.) Used for uploading faculty documents. Use Math pages for Math sections (see Section Access). 4

5 Notice Room Webform Used for uploading notices relevant to the Math department User this type for creating rooms that can be scheduled. Create a new form or questionnaire accessible to users. Submission results and statistics are recorded and accessible to privileged users. 5

6 Adding a New Page to a Math Section If you are creating a new page for an area listed in Section Access, click Math Page. After you click Math Page, you will be presented with the following: There are two items that are required when adding a new page to a section: Title and Section. Title is what will be shown at the top of the page. Section is the specific section this Math page is associated with (see Section Access). 6

7 Title The title should be short, descriptive, and properly formatted. Body The content body of the page behaves similarly to a Word document. Using the buttons in the toolbar, you can format your text almost any way you want. For more details on formatting content within the body, see the Formatting Content section. Section Below the Body is a dropdown box that may contain one or more options. You will only be able to see areas for which you have access to edit or create content. Select the appropriate section for the content you are creating. See Section Access. Menu Settings This allows you to place a link within the sidebar to the page that you are creating. To do so, click the Provide a menu link checkbox. After you check the checkbox, you will be provided with more options on how you would like to configure the link. 7

8 The two most important fields are Menu link title and Parent Item. Menu link title is what the link label will be (normally it s the same as the page title) Parent Item is what determines where it will show in the menu structure. o It is EXTREMELY important to select something other than <Main menu> as this will place it in the global navigation (blue bar at the top of all pages Home, Undergraduate, Graduate, etc.). Choosing a Parent Item The item you select will be the Parent of the link you are creating. You can see in the diagram below that if you want the link to be shown immediately when you visit the Undergraduate section, you should choose Undergraduate as the parent menu item. If you want the link to only be shown after the user clicks on Courses then the parent menu item should be Courses. 8

9 URL Path Settings This setting is very important if you want the breadcrumbs to work properly and helps the URL provide an idea of the sites structure. By default, the Generate automatic URL alias will be checked. The URL is created by using the section that you chose and adding the page title to the end of it. So if you picked the Undergraduate section and named your page Math 110, you would end up with a URL of In this case, we want the URL reflect to where the page will be on the website. We need to disable the automatic alias and specify the URL manually. Our Courses page is going to have a link on it to our new Math 110 course page. So we want the URL alias to be undergraduate/courses/math110. Try to avoid using anything other than alphanumerical characters and underscores or hyphens to separate words. In this case, undergraduate/courses/math-110 would also be acceptable. Save Once you re happy with your new Math page, click the Save button. You will be able to view the page you just saved. 9

10 Adding a New Page to a Math Microsite If you are creating a new page for a microsite (eg, Dynamical Systems, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), click Basic Page. The process will be very similar to Adding a New Page to a Math Section. You do not need specific section access to add or edit a page on a microsite. There is one item that is required when adding a new page to a microsite: Title. This is what will be shown at the top of the page. Title See the Title section. Body See the Body section. Menu Settings See the Menu Settings section. For Math pages, the Parent item is associated with a section defined in Section Access. For Basic pages, the Parent item is associated with a microsite within the Math website. URL Path Settings See the URL Path Settings section. For Math pages, the URL alias is associated with a section defined in Section Access. For Basic pages, the URL alias is associated with a microsite within the Math website. Save Once you re happy with your new Basic page, click the Save button. You will be able to view the page you just saved. 10

11 Modifying Content Edit from Page When you have permission to edit a page, you will see two tabs, View and Edit. Clicking Edit will take you to the editing area for the web page. You can then follow instructions outlined in the Creating Content section. Searching for Content If someone asks you to update the Math 110 page and you can t remember exactly where that is, there is a tool to help you see all Math website content. Following the first step in Preparing to Create Content will get you to your user page with multiple tabs above your user id. Then, click the Content tab. On the Content page, you may: View a list of content Search for content (by Title, Type, and/or Sections) Sort the list of content (by Title, Type, Author, Published, or Updated) 11

12 You will be able to edit content on the Math website you have access to (see Section Access). Clicking the title of the page will take you directly to what the public sees. (see Title section). Clicking the Edit link will take you directly to edit mode and you can follow along with the Creating Content section. 12

13 Formatting Content In the Body section, you can format your text almost any way you want. Here are a few formatting functions to keep in mind: Remove Format If you are copying text from another source and do not want to maintain its formatting, highlight the content you want to change and click this button. Insert Link If you would like to insert a link, click this button. See Linking to Content and Uploading Files for more information. Remove Link If you would like to remove a link, click anywhere inside the link and click this button. Insert Image If you would like to insert an image, click this button. See Uploading Files for more information. 13

14 Format Text This dropdown of styles helps you maintain consistent looking content throughout the page. Normal will be your most used option for paragraphs, links, bulleted lists, etc. Heading will be used to properly structure your content. Text Filter The text format filter has 3 options: Full HTML Filtered HTML Plain text. It should always be set to Full HTML to be able to use the various styles provided by the editor. Linking to Content To link to content, you will need to highlight the text you would like to create a link for and click the Insert Link button. 14

15 The Link Type dropdown may have something other than URL selected but you will most likely want to use the URL option for what you are trying to accomplish. If you are linking to a web page, you can paste the URL directly in the empty URL textfield and click OK. If you re going to be linking to a document (PDF, Word Document, etc.), that is on the Math website you will need to click the Browse Server button shown in the image above. o If the file is already uploaded to the server, you can navigate the file browser until you find that particular file. Once you have found the file, you can either single click on it and click the Insert File button or double click the file. 15

16 Uploading Files If the file does not yet exist on the Math website, you will need to upload it. To do this, we follow the same steps as Linking to Content to launch the file browser. The next step is to navigate to where you would like to upload the file. If this is an undergraduate file: o navigate to Section o click undergraduate o click the Upload button o click the Choose File button This will launch a file browser where you can navigate to departments shares or files located on your computer. 16

17 After you have found the file you would like to upload, you will need to click the Upload button below Choose File to upload it to the server. 17

18 The file that you uploaded will be selected automatically. Then, you can click the Insert button to place a link to the newly uploaded document in the textfield of the link panel. Click OK and you now have a link to your document. 18
