We were asked to think up an idea involving the design process. I am writing this to give you a broader understanding of what I intend to create as an end-result. Everyone who has been through the hiring process or is looking to be understands the importance of having a solid portfolio. I m thankful for the opportunity to design a creation, and I m hoping that this project will give me some material to include in my own selection. For my project, I have chosen to design a CD cover and insert with liner notes. I am planning on using the programs GIMP and Photoshop to help me achieve my goal. I am hoping to create an eye-catching motif that will incorporate the elements of design, and some of the other ideas we have been learning about. I am looking forward to applying my efforts to something that will allow me to grow as a designer, as well as lend support for my talents and abilities. 3 Individual Project: CD Album Art Dan Hoff Writing 372 Due November 13, 2010

4 Executive Summary I am in the initial stages of creating my individual project for the class. I will be designing a complete CD package with the cover, back, and liner notes. For the cover, I intend to be using stock photos and text to compose my project. I will be incorporating the elements of design (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity) to make my album artwork more appealing and eye-catching. I am hoping to design a more creative album cover than most artists usually go for by using a standard photo. I will be using my own personal computer to work on. The software I will be using will be a standard version of Photoshop called Gimp. I will be using the actual Adobe Photoshop program as well. I will be printing a finalized version for the class. My idea for the project is to incorporate a personal interest of mine of music into the design portion of the project. I think by doing so, I will be more invested in the design process and having a satisfying outcome as a result. In order to complete my project by the projected due date, November 13, I will be devoting three hours a week to developing and editing my project. I plan on incorporating various things I will learn from the class into the project as I work. This way, I will be able to continually improve my work as I go along.

5 Product Description The typical CD size is about 4 by 4.5 inches. I will be designing my CD art to reflect the same size as a real case. The cover will be using stock photos and text that will be incorporated together to create a visually pleasing cover. It will of course include the band name and title of the album. I will also be creating the back with more photos and a tracklisting. For the album liners, I will be using more text but in a way that works with the elements of design that will help to make the blocks of text more agreeable to the eye. I am hoping to have the finalized version on either stock printer paper or glossy to reflect the quality of an actual CD cover.

7 Conclusion I am excited to start working on the project before me so I can flex my creative and academic muscles. One of the main things I will be keeping in mind is that my project is a process, not something to do all at once. The delivery schedule will help me to stay on track. I know that this project will allow me the opportunity to build my skill set, along with my portfolio. The portfolio is a valuable tool to have when heading out into the career search. It lends credibility to your abilities and knowledge, while giving you talking points during the interview. By integrating the elements of design into my album cover, I am hoping to create a visually pleasing product.
