Proquest CINAHL is database which provides comprehensive and up to date information on nursing and health literature. Please note that not every article is displayed in full text - many are in abstract format only. Getting started 1. Select the Start button towards the bottom left of the screen. Windows operating system If you are off campus, open your internet browser and proceed to number Select each of the following: Programs > and Internet > Internet Explorer. (below) Accessing Proquest CINAHL On Campus Windows operating system 3. Once Internet Explorer opens type in the URL address box (white strip at the top of the screen). This will open the Staffordshire University main internet home page. Then select the following links: University Services > University Libraries > Online Library > Access Staffordshire University E-Resources > select C > select CINAHL Full Text. 4. If you are off campus, you will be asked to enter your university login details. This consists of the ollowing: Username (first part of your University address i.e. 2 letters and 6 numbers) Password (date of birth in 6 digits i.e. ddmmyy unless you have changed this) Note that this information can be found on your student card. 5. You will then be transported to the CINAHL gateway page. To proceed to the database, simply select the link which says Access to Search Screen (Graphics Version). ins093/s.coates/april-2007

2 Setting up a basic search 1. To run a basic search, select the tab which says basic search. 2. Enter your keywords into the box labelled Basic Search. E.g. midwifery 3. You can limit your search according to a particular date range by selecting it from the Date range box. E.g. All dates, last 12 months, last 3 years, last 5 years. 4. Alternatively, you can enter specific dates. E.g. On this date, Before this date, After this date or Custom date range. If you select one of these options, a new box will appear allowing you to enter the date/s. 5. Press the button to run the search. CINAHL Proquest Basic Search page More search options 1. Select the link to further narrow down a search. 2. You can search for a specific journal title by entering its name in the Journal Title box. 3. You can search for an author by entered a name into the authors box. 4. To search for a particular document type, select the Document type box. E.g. book, letter, review. 5. To search within an area of special interest, select an option from Special interest box. E.g. Dental Care. 6. Press the button to run the search. Basic Search: More Search Options 2

3 Advanced search CINAHL Proquest Advanced Search Page 1. More search options are available by selecting the tab. 2. You can run up to three separate keyword searches at the same time. Simply enter your keywords into each of the boxes. 3. Within each of the three search boxes you can select a document type. Simply select any box labeled Citation and Abstract. E.g. Article Title, ISBN, Journal Title, Language etc. 4. Select the Date range box in order to search within specific dates. E.g. On this date, Before this date, Last 3 years etc. 5. You can also combine your search criteria by selecting AND or NOT for example. E.g. John Smith (Author) AND Kingdom (Publisher) AND The NHS in the UK (Article Title). See screenshot above. 5. Press the button to run the search. More search options 1. Select the link to further narrow down a search. By using these options, you can construct a very specific search. 3

4 Your search results Search Results 1. To view additional pages containing further matches, press the Next > button. Press the < Previous button to go back. 2. To view match details, Select its title link. Note that not all articles are displayed as full text. 4. Once you are transported to your selection, up to three options (depending on the access level of the particular article) will be displayed at the top right corner of the page. They are: Cite/Abstract, Text+Graphics or Page Image (see below). Cite/Abstract - This includes basic bibliographic information about the article. E.g. Author, Document Type, Language, ISBN Number. Press the button to print. Select File then Save As in order to save the document. Text + Graphics 4

5 This shows the article in its entirety and all graphics such as diagrams, charts and photos. Press the button to print. Select File then Save As in order to save the document. Page Image This shows the article in a PDF format. The appearance of the document will be more like that of a book. A new toolbar will appear half way down the page containing both the save and print buttons. Press the button in order to print. To save, press the button. To save an article 1. The easiest way to save an article is to copy and paste the text into Microsoft Word. 2. To do this, simply highlight and select the text you wish to copy by holding down the left mouse button and running it over the text. 3. Select Edit then Copy from the menu. 4. Open Word by going to Start > Programs > Office XP > MS Word and select Edit then Paste from the menu. 5. You should then proceed to save the document. To print an article 1. If you wish to print the current page press the button. A new window will appear. 2. Select the appropriate printer e.g. T6-laser and press the button.
