Step 2: Library Catalogue Search the catalogue using effective search strategies. Library Catalogue - Finding a Resource Learn to search the library catalogue more effectively using Boolean operators OR and AND. Using OR broadens a search to include results that contain either of the words you type in. Using AND narrows (or focuses) a search by combining the search terms you specify. For this exercise, we will look for a mathematics game for use in the Elementary or Secondary classroom. 1. Go to the UofA Libraries homepage. 2. Click on NEOS Advanced Search link in the Find Local Items box. 3. Click on the Advanced Search tab. First Box: Leave the default search field at Any Field. Type mathematics or arithmetic. Second Box: Change the search field to Any Field. Type games or game use or game playing. Third Box: Change the search field to Subject. Type elementary. [If your chosen topic is secondary, type secondary]. Library Box: Select University of Alberta HT Coutts Education. Note: The three boxes are combined using AND (the default Boolean operator). 4. Click Search. 6 EDIT 202 Library Lab Summer 2010
5. On your search results page, select a resource. Click on the title to see the full record of the resource. 6. Take a screenshot of the record. To do a printscreen, hit the PrintScreen button (next to F12 key) on your computer keyboard. 7. Go to your Assignment - Question 1A. Paste the screenshot in the box provided. To paste, either Right-click > Paste or hold down the Ctrl-V keys. 7 EDIT 202 Library Lab Summer 2010
8. Provide the following information for Question 1B in the assignment: Title of the resource. First author's last name (give the organization's name if there is no personal author). Library location & call number of the resource. One Subject term listed in the full record. Exporting to RefWorks from the Library Catalogue 1. Click on the dark blue button on the left to select the resource record. 2. Click the tab in the dark blue band at the top of the page. 3. In the View of Records drop-down menu, select Full. 4. Click on the Add Records to RefWorks button. You should see a message saying "Importing references, please wait..." 5. Click on View Last Imported Folder. 6. Check the little Ref ID box to select the reference. 7. Click on the Put in Folder drop-down and select EDIT Click on View > Folder > EDIT At the Switch To box, select APA 6th - American Psychological Association, 6th Edition. 10. Maximize view. Printscreen this page showing your EDIT 202 folder containing the citation for the resource found in the library catalogue. 11. Go to your Assignment - Question 2. Paste the screenshot in the box provided. 8 EDIT 202 Library Lab Summer 2010
Step 3: Databases Search ProQuest Education Journals and export citations directly to RefWorks. Searching ProQuest Education Journals You can access all Education databases from our Databases by Subject webpage. Some of the most popular Education databases include CBCA Education which covers Canadian information in the field of education and ERIC, one of the world's largest database for educational research. For this assignment, we will search ProQuest Education Journals which provides access to over 700 top educational publications, including nearly 600 of the titles in full text. 1. To start searching, click on ProQuest Education Journals. 2. Select Advanced tab. 3. Using boolean logic that you learned, type these search terms in the boxes: mathematics or arithmetic games or game use or game playing elementary [type secondary if that is your chosen topic] 4. Click Search. 9 EDIT 202 Library Lab Summer 2010
5. Select an article with a Full text or Full text - PDF link. Click on the Full text link to get to the complete article. Printscreen the first page of the article. 6. Go to your Assignment - Question 3. Paste the screenshot in the box provided. Exporting Citations to RefWorks To export the citation of your chosen article to RefWorks: 1. In the Document View of your article, check the box. 10 EDIT 202 Library Lab Summer 2010
2. Click on tab at the top. 3. Click on the Export Citations link. 4. Click on Export directly to RefWorks. 5. In RefWorks, you should see the Import from ProQuest screen. 6. Click on View Last Imported Folder to see the reference you imported. 7. To put the reference in your EDIT 202 folder: Check the little Ref ID box above the article title. In the Put in Folder drop-down, select EDIT 202. Click OK. 8. Close ProQuest Education Journals. Step 4: Internet Searches Search trusted and other websites and evaluate them. Internet Searches - Trusted Sites Begin your search for Internet resources at the Coutts Library web pages as we have subject guides with links to useful teaching resources. 1. Select one of these resource guides: Elementary Mathematics > Web Resources tab Secondary Mathematics > Useful Sites tab 2. Find an Internet resource for Elementary or Secondary Mathematics. 3. Printscreen the main page of the website you found. 11 EDIT 202 Library Lab Summer 2010
4. Go to your Assignment - Question 4A. Paste the screenshot in the box provided. Now export the website information to RefWorks using RefGrab-It: 1. On website selected, click on RefGrab-It on your browser toolbar. Note: When you use RefGrab-It on a web page, it automatically opens a "temporary results page" in a new window. Pop-ups must be allowed. 2. Import record into RefWorks. 3. Put it in your EDIT 202 folder. Internet Searches - Google 1. Go to Google. 2. Type your search terms for a Mathematics teaching resource. 3. PrintScreen your search strategy in the Google search box. 4. Go to your Assignment - Question 4B. Paste the screenshot showing your search strategy in the box provided. 5. Select a website from your Google search results. Printscreen the main page of the website. 6. Go to your Assignment - Question 4B again. This time, paste the screenshot of the main page of the website you found in the next box. 12 EDIT 202 Library Lab Summer 2010
7. Critically evaluate the website you found and answer Questions 4B (i - iv) in your Assignment. i. Who created this website? (Hint: If there is no personal author, list the organization which created the website.) ii. When was it last updated? If it is unavailable, make a note in the assignment. iii. Is it suitable for either elementary or secondary students? iv. What is the purpose of the website: to inform, teach, sell, persuade, entertain or enlighten? 8. Export web information to RefWorks using RefGrab-It. Step 5: Reference List Create your reference list using the APA citation style. Creating Your Reference List You can use the Bibliographic tool in RefWorks to create your reference list. 1. Go to RefWorks and open your EDIT 202 folder. Click on View > Folders > EDIT 202. You should see 4 citations - 1 resource, 1 article and 2 websites. If any is missing, click on View > All References to see if it is there. 2. Click on Bibliography. The Output Style should be set to APA 6th - American Psychological Association, 6th Edition. 3. Click Format a bibliography from a list of references. File Type to Create... Choose Word for Windows. References from... Choose EDIT 202 folder. Click Create Bibliography. When asked if you want to Open or Save, select Open. If you are asked to download, click on Download and then Open. 4. Double-check your references for errors, capitalization errors in particular. 13 EDIT 202 Library Lab Summer 2010
Change any date that appears as, for example, 12/12/08 to December 12, 2008 (APA style). Copy your Reference list. 5. Go to your Assignment - Question 5. Paste your Reference List in the box provided. The title References should be centered at the top. Check reference formats. Review the entire assignment. Save and upload your assignment. Congratulations! You have successfully completed the lab assignment. Sample APA Style Reference List The APA citation style requires either a Document URL or a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) for online journal articles. Here is an example of an APA reference list of an online article with a doi, an online article with a persistent link or url, a book and a web page. References Baldry, A. C., & Farrington, D. P. (2007). Effectiveness of programs to prevent school bullying. Victims & Offenders, 2(2), doi: / Collins, M., & Dowell, M. L. (2008). Discipline and due process. Thrust for Educational Leadership, 28(2), Retrieved from Dei, G. (2007). Decolonizing knowledge. Toronto, ON: McGraw-Hill. Geological Society of America. (2007). Resources for K-12 earth science educators. Retrieved February 1, 2009, from Note: When a website has no date of publication available, use (n.d.) for no date. To learn more about using APA style, check out our guide, Creating an APA Reference List. 14 EDIT 202 Library Lab Summer 2010
