1 Syllabus Course Number: CS 412 Course Title: Web and Database Programming Course Description CS412 - WEB AND DATABASE PROGRAMMING (3). Introduces web-based multi-tiered distributed application development. Topics include using markup and scripting languages in the Presentation tier, services in the (web and business) Logic tier, and a relational database in the Data tier. Prerequisite Course CS 362 Data Structures Course Overview This course introduces Web-based application development to the student. The key focus of this course is the client side of the Web; however, you will cover some concepts on the server side that will allow you to create a complete Website. Students will build a complete Web-based application which includes the design and implementation of the client side with hooks into a server-side database and the use of a Web Server. Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to: 1. Introduce basic Web-based application development using HTML/XHTML so that browsers can render documents on computer displays. 2. Show how the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) can control the appearance of Web pages more accurately and uniformly. 3. Create JavaScripts to make Web pages come alive or dynamically manipulate Web content. Present key fundamental scripting concepts such as control and data structures, arrays, and functions. 4. Describe object-based programming with JavaScript s built-in objects such as String, Date, Math and cookies. 5. Present Microsoft s Dynamic HTML object model. 6. Discuss the server-side of Web-based applications using the Apache Web Server. 7. Integrate a simple server-side database using MySQL database technology.
