Access: Accessing and Using JSTOR For RPCC Library Users JSTOR is a digital database of scholarly resources, many available in full-text. (Please note that access to all electronic resources subscribed to by RPCC Library Services must be made by way of the links provided on the RPCC Library Services website. The databases to which we subscribe may be accessed from our Databases pages or from relevant Subject Guide pages. ) Links to JSTOR can be found under Popular Full-Text and All Full-Text Databases pages.
Just look for the JSTOR link, as shown below, in the lists of databases or visit JSTOR: Off-campus access will require login. Clicking any database link on the RPCC Library Services website will direct off-campus users to the following login screen. You will need your Library user ID (LoLA ID number) or your alternative ID (LoLA user name) and your PIN (6-digit date of birth formatted mmddyy, for example for January 1, 1998). Searching: Once you have accessed JSTOR, you will be able to conduct a Basic or Advanced search. Note that search terms are not case-sensitive. The Basic Search form is located on the main JSTOR page and allows for full-text searching of key words or phrases, authors or titles. Such search results tend to be broad, searching all searchable content. To help limit results, you may enclose your terms within quotation marks.
The Advanced Search offers more specific and refined searching, allowing you to search for full-text, author, item title, abstract, and captions, as well as setting other limits, including access type, item type, date range, discipline, and more. Note, however, that our subscription covers articles from journals and open access e-books.
Refining a Search: A sample basic search for American Civil War, no quotation marks, retrieved a list of over 269,000 articles while enclosing the phrase in quotation marks finds around 10,500 results. A search may be further refined using the limiters to filter results. Users may use more specific terms and choose to limit the search to the current results by checking Search within results. Note that selecting Modify Search will return you to the search home page. Other limiting options, located to the left of your results, include: Content Type (journals or books); Publication date; Subject; and Access Level ( Read and download is recommended to locate and access full-text articles included in our subscription as well as open access e-books). Choosing other options may show items that may not be available under our subscription. Located above the list of results are the Sort By, Show Snippets, and Export Citations options. You may also change Sort By from Relevance (default) to Newest or Oldest. Selecting Show Snippets will display an abstract from the item. Users may also export selected citations to various citation management applications (RefWorks, EndNote, etc.). Working with Results: Results List: Results are listed 25 records to a page. Scroll to the bottom of the page to go to the next page of results. Note that the Sort By, Show Snippets, and Export buttons stay visible as you scroll down the page. Export allows you to select articles using the check box to export citations to third party citation applications, such as RefWorks, or to a text file. Your search terms are highlighted where they appear in the abstract. Each record includes a check box which selects citations for export as noted above, the article title, author(s), journal title, volume, issue, date, page numbers, and an excerpt of the article s abstract (summary). Each record also includes buttons to download the PDF, add the article to a list (this requires
creation of an optional free MyJSTOR account), and get citations in three styles, MLA, APA, and Chicago. Detailed Record: Clicking on the title of an article in the list will open the detailed record for that article. From here, you may search for other terms either in this issue, in this journal, or in all content in JSTOR. In addition to the Download, Add to Lists, and Cite buttons, you may also view information about the journal. Where available, use the Back to Search Results link; otherwise use the browser back button to get back to your search results.
The breadcrumbs (links) above the article go to the specific issue where the article appears and then to the entire run of the journal that may be available in JSTOR. Below the breadcrumbs is an image of the journal cover, along with article and publisher information, and linked topics which may be used to find other articles with those topics.
Below the article details is the article preview, page thumbnails, and article references. You may view the entire article in the preview by clicking the forward and back arrows. Note that the Previous and Next Item links above the preview refer to articles in the same issue of the journal and not items in your original result list. Note that these articles may not be relevant to your topic. You may also go to the pages where your search terms occur by clicking View Results. To print or save an entire article, choose Download PDF You will then be prompted to accept JSTOR s terms and conditions. Click I Accept to go to the PDF. Note that once you click I Accept, the selection will be remembered for subsequent articles accessed in the same session. You may also use your separate MyJSTOR account the save the
setting for all future search sessions. The document may open in a new page or tab, depending on the browser being used and its settings. The first page of the PDF will be publication information. Use the appropriate tools to print or download the article as needed. Using Cite This Item Click the Cite This Item button. You will be given citations in three styles: MLA, APA, and Chicago. Clicking on the clipboard icon next to each citation style will automatically copy the citation which may then be pasted into a Works Cited, Bibliography, or References page. Be sure to check for correct formatting, such as italics, hanging indention, etc., and for any omissions, such as access date, incomplete DOI numbers, and so on. You may also choose to export the citation from here as well. JSTOR Accessibility Policies: Excerpted verbatim from JSTOR s Help and Support page: Official Accessibility Policy The website is accessible to users with disabilities, including keyboard-only users and those with visual and cognitive impairments. The website is responsive, meaning users can easily adjust font size and color/contrast settings on most devices. We have made every effort to ensure that our image-based PDF files are accessible and can be read with screen readers like JAWS. These files are tagged at a high level using an automated process. While this method is not exact, it dramatically increases the accessibility of the files as compared to an untagged version. We regularly use automated checks and conduct tests with users against Section 508 and WCAG standards to evaluate and measure the accessibility of the site.
Accessibility specific support: In the event that the PDF tagging described above is not sufficient for your use, we can perform manual tagging for you. We are also happy to re-format PDFs that are unreadable via screen reader. Please contact JSTOR support if you require PDF tagging, need content in an alternative format, find an accessibility issue with the website or need general assistance. You can do this via phone, chat or . Please include citations for any requested articles. The turnaround time for requests will vary but we generally respond in 3 days or less. Limit of 3 articles per request Turn-around time is 3 days per request Compliance: JSTOR uses reasonable efforts to ensure that the JSTOR website adheres to the following standards and guidelines. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. This is measured by the Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), which is a standardized form describing how a product meets each accessibility guideline of Section 508. W3C WAI WCAG 2.0 Level AA. Additional Support for Students: Access JSTOR s Support for more information on using JSTOR, technical support, and additional resources. This document has been reviewed for accessibility. If you find any issues with this document, please contact RPCC Library Services at Library@rpcc.edu; please specify the document title.
