1 Advanced Vision Practical 1 Bob Fisher School of Informatics January 2012 Abstract This describes the first assignment (of 3) for assessment on Advanced Vision. The main goal is to develop a Wikipedia page that describes a computer vision technique or application well enough that a beginner can understand the basics of the concept. Task Background You can find various useful online computer vision resources at: CVonline has about topics of which about have some content, and about 1200 have a Wikipedia page. Click on the topic hierarchy, eg. Databases and indexing related concepts. You will see a set of links, with 3 colours: 1. Lighter blue: a link exists that points to Wikipedia content for computer vision 2. Darker blue: A CVonline internal link exists, but no Wikipedia link exists (at least at the time that the entry was made) 3. Black: no CVonline or Wikipedia link exists Your assignment is to create a potential Wikipedia page containing introductory content for one of the topics that does not have a Wikipedia entry. Good submissions could get added to Wikipedia. What your wiki page needs: 1. A description of the concept. 2. An outline of the theory behind the concept, with cross-linkage into other Wikipedia concepts. 3. Enough maths or computational details to be precise about the concept at a basic level. 1

2 4. An example of the concept. 5. Several proper citations of published papers so readers can find more details (but also some URLs if possible). The aim is to develop a Wikipedia page that describes a computer vision technique or application well enough that a beginner can understand the basics of the concept. Some examples of reasonable pages are: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/relevance_feedback and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/content-based_image_retrieval. Specific Tasks 1. Choose a topic from CVonline that does not have a Wikipedia entry. 2. Bob Fisher (rbf@inf) about your selection. It s first-come-first-served, with each topic assigned to only one student. 3. Create a Wikipedia page as per the guidance below. Use CVonline entries or search the web for other resources on the topic. 4. Print your Wikipedia page as a PDF document (On Dice, the browser print command pops up a window that allows printing to a File. Select the PDF option. You will have to choose a filename. Close the automatically generated table of contents on the Wikipedia page before making the PDF file. Be sure to check the PDF conversion using acroread. 5. Submit the PDF file using the submit command described below. Wikipedia Page Creation Account Creation From a Wikipedia page click on the Log in / create account button at the upper right. Click on: Don t have an account? Create one.. Choose a user name (UUU) and password and login. Initial Page Creation At the top of the page you will now see a link with your user name. Click on it. Assuming that you have made a new account, you will see a page that say Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact name. Click on: Start the User:UUU page, which creates a page for you to work on. Copy this text into that new page (you can get a copy of the text on the course web page): 2

4 You can then Save Page which shows you what you have created. If you just want to get a quick view, then click Show preview which formats the page but does not yet save it. After you have saved the page, you can return to editing by clicking on the Edit tab at the top right. Main Elements of Formatting Wikipedia Pages 1. Start your article with the topic of your CVonline article. Put the topic in bold font by clicking on the B button and then replacing the quoted the text. 2. The I initialises an italics block in a similar way. 3. Plain text is entered simply by typing. 4. Special symbols can be added by using the pulldown menu Insert to select the desired symbol set and then clicking on the desired symbol. 5. Decide what sections you would like for your article, and start each section name with a == SECTION NAME ==. You should consider at least these sections: { Introduction, Theory, Example, Applications }. 6. When you use a term TERM that already has a Wikipedia page, enter the term as [[ TERM ]], which automatically links the text to the other page. 7. Add inline citations by using a <ref>citation</ref> block. 8. Make itemized lists using * and enumerated lists by using #. You can go to further depths by using ** and ***, etc. 9. Add links to non-wikipedia URLs to the External Links section at the bottom by: *[URL DocumentTitle]. 10. Add general references to the Bibliography section by adapting the example shown above. 11. Add images by using [[File:FILENAME.jpg Caption.]]. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/wikipedia:picture_tutorial for more details about image sizes and placement. Only logged in users with autoconfirmed accounts can upload images (meaning that the account must be at least four days old, and the user must have made at least ten edits). If you do not have an account, or you have not been autoconfirmed yet, please see Wikipedia:Files for upload. You can search for existing image files by keyword at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/special:listfiles. Try to avoid accidentally making changes. Viewing Pages There are buttons below the text edit box to preview or save the text. Saving automatically shows the text. Preview does not save, but renders it. Assignment Submission The PDF file created as described above should be submitted electronically by 4 pm Thursday Feb 9. The online submission line is: submit av 1 FILE where FILE is the name of your PDF file. The assignment is estimated to take 10 hours work, resulting in a 2 page description. By submitting the assignment, you imply that you have read the section below on Plagiarism Avoidance Advice, which includes information about the use of Turnitin. You must do this assignment by yourself. The assignment will be marked as follows: Issue Percentage 1. Concept clarity 35% 2. Correctness of details in presentation 30% 3. Aesthetics of presentation 30% 4. Appropriate use of figures/graphics 5% Plagiarism Avoidance Advice You are expected to write the document in your own words. Short quotations (with proper, explicit attribution) are allowed, but the bulk of the submission should be your own work in your own words. Use proper citation style for all citations, whether traditional paper resources or web-based materials. If you use small amounts of text from another document or the web, you must quote the text and provide a citation to the original source. Quoting large amounts of other documents is unacceptable. If you cannot figure out what your topic is about, discuss it with the lecturer or choose another topic. The school has a robust policy on plagiarism that can be viewed here: 5

6 The school uses various techniques to detect plagiarism, included automated tools and comparison against on-line repositories. Remember: a weak assignment is not a ruined career (and may not reduce your final average more than 1%), but getting caught at plagiarism could ruin it. In particular, we will use a plagiarism detection service: The plagiarism detection service is an online service that enables institutions and staff to carry out electronic comparison of students work against electronic sources including other students work. The service is managed by The University of Northumbria on behalf of the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and is available to all UK tertiary education institutions by subscription. The plagiarism detection service works by executing searches of the world wide web, and extensive databases of reference material, as well as content previously submitted by other users. Each new submission is compared with all the existing information. The software makes no decisions as to whether a student has plagiarised, it simply highlights sections of text that are duplicated in other sources. All work will continue to be reviewed by the course tutor. Once work has been submitted to the system it becomes part of the ever growing database of material against which subsequent submissions are checked. The software is used as a tool to highlight any instance where there is a possible case of plagiarism. Passages copied directly or very closely from existing sources will be identified by the software and both the original and the potential copy will be displayed for the tutor to view. Where any direct quotations are relevant and appropriately referenced, the course tutor will be able to see this and will continue to consider the next highlighted case.
