2 Slide 2 - Slide 2 This video will show you how to build a company list using a database called Lexis Nexis Academic. This tool can help you identify competitors or customers if businesses make up your target market rather than consumers. Page 2 of 39

4 Slide 4 - Slide 4 Type Lexis Nexis Academic in the search box located in the purple menu bar at the top just above the Library's hours. Then click Go. Page 4 of 39

10 Slide 10 - Slide 10 On the form that appears, specify the attributes of the companies you are looking for. There are several criteria you can use to customize your list of companies. You can select specific industry codes to build a list of companies in one or more industries. Make your selection using either the Standard Industrial Classification or SIC or the North American industry Classification System or NAICS. There is a Lookup tool for each classification system, so you don't need to know the industry code in advance. In this example I am going to use the NAICS to build a list of companies in the travel accommodation industry, specifically the hotel and motel industry. Click on the NAICS Lookup. Page 10 of 39

11 Slide 11 - Slide 11 Here is the Accommodation and Food Services sector. Click on the plus sign to drill down to the exact industry segment you are looking for. Page 11 of 39

12 Slide 12 - Slide 12 Once you have found the exact industry you are looking for, or the closest match, select it by checking the box next to it. Then click OK. Page 12 of 39

16 Slide 16 - Slide 16 You can also limit your list of results by company size based on sales or revenue or by number of employees, with the ability to specify a range in each case. Page 16 of 39

17 Slide 17 - Slide 17 Let's keep our sales threshold low in this example and select companies with sales above $100,000,000. Page 17 of 39

18 Slide 18 - Slide 18 Finally, you can specify the geography -- including regions or countries, states or provinces or even cities. Page 18 of 39

19 Slide 19 - Slide 19 In this example I will select companies that operate in the United States. Note that you can select multiple geographies. Then click Create to generate the list. Page 19 of 39

21 Slide 21 - Slide 21 If you are not fully satisfied with your search results, click Edit Search to return to the company list form to modify your search criteria. Page 21 of 39

22 Slide 22 - Slide 22 Perhaps you are interested in a very niche segment of the hotel industry, for example the luxury segment of the industry. Industry codes like NAICS don't always classify industries in such detail as to capture those niche industries. However, you can use the free text search option on the Create a Company List Form to search by keyword to limit your search. Each company profile in Lexis Nexis has a brief Business Description section that often describes the company's products, the business segments it operates in and its brands. Page 22 of 39

23 Slide 23 - Slide 23 In this case I will enter the keyword "Luxury" to limit the company list to only those hotel companies that have a luxury brand. After reading a number of Business Descriptions of companies in your industry you might realize that different keywords apply, so you might want conduct additional searches to include those. After you have entered your term, click Create. Page 23 of 39

24 Slide 24 - Slide 24 Note that now we only have three companies, all of which operate in the luxury segment of the hotel industry. You can also customize your list by clicking on Customize List just below the Edit Search link at the top right. Page 24 of 39

26 Slide 26 - Slide 26 I'll add assets and liabilities to the financial profile of the companies in this example. You can also sort your company list on a number of criteria. Page 26 of 39
