6 Global Directories Distributed architectures minimize duplication in information storage and flow and improve reliability Distributed storage and maintenance of digital objects (e.g. document, organization, project, event) Metadata accessible as XML/RDF records using international standards Centralized directories provide access to the distributed sources through a community registry/ies
7 Services in the RING: examples Services will be part of the RING if they provide: XML exports of information using agreed metadata sets documents participating in the new AGRIS or in the Open Archive Initiative (OAI) RSS feeds etc...
8 Next steps The GFAR Secretariat has started developing the CIARD RING service Registration of services in the RING is now open. The CIARD RING logo will be used by featured services to indicate participation in the RING

10 AGRIS AGRIS Database and Search Engine: webbased bibliographic database and search engine Database currently has over 2.5 million references to documents of various kinds Data currently being provided from over 40 AGRIS Resource Centres worldwide 200,000 users per month - 300% increase in 2008 with many referrals from Google
11 AGRIS Tools Tools used in preparation of input to, or extraction of data from, the AGRIS database: AGRIS Application Profile (AP): open standard created for description, exchange and retrieval of metadata of agricultural Document-Like Information Objects (DLIOs) AGRIS Subject Categories: set of categories of agricultural objects (e.g. documents and projects), created for the AGRIS database AGRIS Serials List: list of scientific journals and serial publications covered in the AGRIS database. WebAGRIS: complete, multilingual Web-based system for distributed data input, processing and dissemination
12 AGRIS Access/Support AGRIS Website ( provides access to the database/search engine and tools as above. Various communities are linked to the website from the DGroups platform with discussion ongoing on the following topics: (a) AGRIS, (b) AGRIS AP, (c) WebAGRIS. AGRIS Secretariat: FAO unit, currently the Knowledge Exchange and Capacity Building Division, responsible for maintaining the AGRIS database, tools, and website
