1 UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER LIBRARY Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management User Guide COVERAGE Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management provides comprehensive coverage of the environmental sciences from 1967 to date, updated monthly. Its subject coverage includes agricultural biotechnology, air quality, aquatic pollution, bacteriology, ecology, energy resources, environmental biotechnology, environmental engineering, environmental impact statements (U.S.), hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, mircorbiology, pollution, risk assessment, safety science, toxicology and toxic emissions, waste management and water resource issues. It provides bibliographic records and abstracts and for some records will link to the full-text document. ACCESS To access Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management, go to the Library s homepage at and select Electronic Information Services. Click on Go. Click on Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management in the alphabetical sequence. For off-campus access you need an Athens username and password; details are at SEARCHING You can search the database in its entirety or search within individual subfiles. To do the latter, click on Search Subfiles to the right of the database name. Click here From the list of subfiles displayed, select the ones to be searched by ticking in the checkboxes to the left of the database names. 1

2 Searching Options There are 2 main search options: Quick Search and Advanced Search. You will be automatically logged in to the Quick Search option on the left-hand frame of the screen. Quick search Use for quick and simple searches only. Key in your search terms in the box provided, select as keyword(s), in title, as author, in journal name or anywhere from the drop-down menu, and click on Exact phrase, Any of the words or All of the words. You can limit results to Latest update, Journal articles only or English only. Select the date range you need, sort by publication date or relevancy, and the detail you want to show: citation, citation and abstract, or full record. Then click on the search button. Example: air pollution fossil fuels, as keyword(s), all of the words, journal articles only, , sort by relevancy rank, full record The number of records retrieved is displayed near the top right-hand of the screen and your search results appear in the main frame of the screen in groups of 25. Click on Next 25 or Previous 25 at the bottom of the page to view the next or previous group. Alternatively, enter a record number to go directly to a specific reference. In addition to the Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management records, you may also get links to Web Resources Related to Your Search or to Recent References Related to your Search. If you wish to view these results, click on the number to the right-hand side of the link. If you have selected subfiles, the records for the first subfile selected will display first. Click on the blue horizontal arrow another subfile. above the results to view results from See Retrieving your Results below for details on marking and retrieving records. Advanced Search Recommended for longer and more complex searches. Click on the Advanced Search Button in the left-hand frame. Key in your search terms in the boxes provided, using the drop-down menus to select the fields you wish to search: Keyword, Title, Author etc. Combine the terms using the AND, OR and NOT. See Search Tips below for more details on combining terms. Example: air pollution AND climate change as keywords, limit to Journal articles only, , sort by publication date or relevancy rank, select the detail you want: citation, citation and abstract, full record or full record omit refs and click on the Search button. As with Quick Search, the number of records retrieved is displayed near the top righthand of the screen and your search results appear in the main frame of the screen in groups of 25. 2

3 Command-Line Search You may also choose to enter a complete search strategy in the Command-line box. Scroll down through the Advanced search screen to use this option. Click on Help for details of how to do this. See Retrieving your Results below for details on marking and retrieving records. Search Tips Combine terms: Use AND to specify that both terms must appear, for example: air pollution AND fossil fuels Use OR to search for either term, for example: water purification OR water treatment Use NOT to search for one term but not another, for example: pollution NOT pesticides will find articles on pollution which do not refer to pesticides. Use NOT cautiously or you may lose relevant articles. Phrases To find words in a phrase simply type in the phrase, for example: air pollution. Use proximity searching to find words within a specified radius. Proximity searching Use WITHIN to find words within a specified radius, for example: (global warming) within 2 (floods) to find these terms within 2 words of each other and in any order. Use NEAR finds terms within 10 words of each other, and use BEFORE and AFTER to find words in a particular order. Note: use double quotes to search for near before and after if you want to use them as search terms. Truncation and wildcards: The symbol * can be used to search for any word beginning with a set of characters, for example: flood* will retrieve flood, floods, flooded, flooding etc * may also be used to represent any number of characters within a word, for example: use colo*r for color or colour. The symbol? can be used to represent a single character within or at the end of a word, for example: wom?n will find woman or women.?? represents 2 characters,??? 3 characters and so on. Browse Click on the Browse Indexes button to browse the publication type, journal or author name index. This can be useful if you are not sure of an author s name. For example: to check the correct form of the name jackson, andrew go to Browse Indexes, select Author Index for Environmental Sciences and Pollution Mgmt and enter Jackson in the Find box. This will bring up the index of all names starting with these letters. To select one or more of the names listed in the index, tick the checkbox to the left of the name and then click on Search in the left-hand section of the screen. 3

4 Thesaurus Use the Thesaurus Search to browse for broader, narrower and related terms in the index. Click on the Thesaurus Search button and type in your term, for example hazardous materials. This brings up broader, narrower, and related terms such as hazard assessment which you can then select to search. RETRIEVING YOUR RESULTS Records retrieved are displayed in groups of 25. If these are currently displayed in Citation format or Citation and Abstract format, click on View Record to display the full record. Full-Text If available, click on Full-Text to directly link into the full-text of the document you need. Check Your Library Use this function to check if items displayed are available in the Library of the University of Ulster. Click on the Check Your Library button. A screen will appear as in the example below: Click on the Search button at Search Your Library Collection to go to the University of Ulster Library Catalogue. Please note that not all items will be held in the Library and you may need to use the Inter-Library Loans/Document Delivery service. Marking You can mark records by ticking in the box to the top-left of each record. When you have finished marking, click on the View Marked Records button. This will display a list of only those records that you have marked. To output results Click on the Save/Print/ Records button. Then choose one of the following options: 4

5 type in your address in the To and From boxes provided. It will normally be the same address in both boxes. Click on button. Save: Select type of computer: PC, Macintosh or Unix, click on Save, go to File and Save as and save in the normal way. It is important to select Text Document from the save as type box. Print: Click on Print Preview, go to File and Print and print the required pages. Please note that you cannot return to your search results from Print Preview so it is preferable to save or your results and print them later. RefWorks: You can export your results to a bibliographic management system called RefWorks either from the results screen or from the Save/Print/ Records screen by clicking on the Save to RefWorks button. Return to Results From the Save/Print/ Records screen, click on Return to Results to go back to your original list of results. SEARCH HISTORY/ALERTS (same as Save Search/Alert) From the Search History/Alerts function you can view a list of all the searches that you have carried out during your search session and rerun or combine these together. You can also recall search strategies that you saved from previous search sessions. A saved alert will be used to automatically search your selected databases for new content every week. You will receive an message that contains up to 250 new records from each database that has new matching content. Click on Help for information about these options. HELP There are help screens available at all stages of your search. Click on the Help button near the top right of screen. EXIT There is no Exit button but it is recommended that you go to the home screen to end the connection to Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management. August
