2 Basic search form and other functionalities If Scopus covers your references well, make an user account [Register] to use all the functions as: Save search result lists; Save search strings; Set alerts for the author, fot he document citation s or for the whole search string Register first, you can save search results to My Settings and get Alerts.

3 Information organized to fields In the search form searches are focused to the different fields of the record. Nice to know: All Fields covers also references: search results are huge and possibly really unfocused You can focus the search to references of the documents -> e.g. find out which ones are citing a certain book

4 Symbols and operators in search statements Boolean and / or proximity operators are used to get as exact search results as possible. You find the Boolean operators from the Document search form. BOOLEAN OPERATORS AND urban AND city OR urban OR city NOT (urban and city) not rural Think carefully the consequences of NOT : does it exclud relevat references. OTHER SYMBOLS Brackets Truncation symbol * urban* (urbanism ) Quotes climate change For phrases. Narrows the search: think carefully the consequences of the quotes!

6 Basic search form Combine terms using Proximity operators Operators and other symbols function both in the Document search and in the Advanced search form. The Proximity operators you have to write into the search string. Be careful with Proximity operators: is there really a connection between the terms; if you doubt, use Boolean operators first and then narrow with Proximity operator. Use always brackets or different search boxes to distinguish the search terms with AND- and Proximity-operators. W/n urban W/15 structure Between the terms urban and structure can be 15 words PRE/n urban PRE/15 planning The term urban precedes the term structure words inside a sentence; 50 words inside an abstract

8 Working with search results Single reference view - DOWNLOAD the document - if not possible -> check journal s availability from the Nelli portal - MORE - Add to My list to make a reference list, e.g.. - The options on right vary according to the reference - CITED BY - chaining forwards - to collect more interesting references. - Related documents - uses same references - Social media: Mendeley users

9 Working with search results Select some/all references and save them using Add to List option for further use More you have more options: You can receive references by mail You can make the bibliography as well

10 OPEN THE LISTS-VIEW Lists view - Functions You have saved some references No account: the references saved for the session. You have an account: You can save references permanently -> Save to Saved list Export -> Save the references to the reference manager program, etc. More -> , make a reference list, etc

11 List view Saved search results When you have an account: SAVED SEARCH RESULTS HELPS YOU TO COLLECT REFERENCES IN A LONG RUN Select the references in List view Use the option Save In the Saved List name your list or add the references to the excisting list.

12 List functions Make a bibliography Select first the references in My list view. Select then Create bibliography option in MORE. You have several format and style options for the bibliography: HTML and TXT works, at least.

13 List view Use of reference managers To make a reference list, bibliography e.g. you can use option to save the references to the Reference management program Choose all references or some of them and use Export option [below in CSV export]. Reference managers Mendeley and RefWorks are listed but other programs can use also. For Zotero use the option RIS Format.

14 Setting Alerts - Author alert To use Alerting options you have to register first. The option are managet in the Settings view or in the Alert view The Author alert

15 Setting Alerts Document citation alert Open the reference and click the Set citation option on the right side. Set the alert.
