Moving Files from Your Computer to myfiles MyFiles is a network file share available to each student, faculty or staff member at UWSP. You use and manage files stored in MyFiles the same way you use and manage files stored on your local computer. To move files from your computer to your myfiles network storage, you will: A. Open your myfiles in Windows Explorer, sizing Explorer to cover half of your computer screen. B. Open a second copy of Windows Explorer, positioning it to cover the other half of your screen. C. Copy and paste the files on your local computer to your myfiles. D. Delete the copies on your local computer. IMPORTANT: Close opened files before moving or deleting. Open Windows Explorer and your myfiles network storage space 1. Click your Start button and select Computer. This opens your Windows Explorer. 2. At the left in Windows Explorer, select Your username will display at the end of the myfiles path. 3. Open the private folder that displays at the right. This is where you will save the files you intend to move. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, UW-STEVENS POINT 1
4. Resize Windows Explorer so it covers about half of your computer screen. To do this, position your mouse cursor along the outer edge of the box. When you see a double-headed arrow you can click and drag the edge to resize. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, UW-STEVENS POINT 2
5. Left-click and hold the top of the Windows Explorer box with your regular mouse cursor to move the box to one side of the screen. Open a second copy of Windows Explorer To move your files from your local computer to your open myfiles private folder, you will want to open a second Windows Explorer box and then view them side by side. This second Windows Explorer should display the files you want to move off your computer into your myfiles private folder. 1. Click your Start button and at the right select Documents. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, UW-STEVENS POINT 3
2. Move this second Windows Explorer box to the other side of the screen. 3. To find files not saved under Documents, select their location from the left. For example, they may be located in a subfolder under Documents, or on a different area of your computer such as your computer Desktop. Copy and paste files from your local computer to your myfiles Now that you have two Windows Explorer boxes open, you are ready to move your files from your local computer to your myfiles network storage. You will select the files on your computer that you want to move, then copy and paste them into your myfiles private folder. IMPORTANT: Close any opened files before moving or deleting. Why should I Copy and Paste my files and folders instead of Moving? If your data transfer is interrupted while moving files, some of your files may be dropped. Always copy your files over to myfiles, copying your files over in smaller groups to speed up file transfer. When your copies are safe in your private folder, make sure to delete the old files on your computer to avoid duplicates and confusion later. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, UW-STEVENS POINT 4
1. Select (do not open) a file in your local computer s Windows Explorer box. 2. Press Ctrl+C to copy, or Right-click and select Copy from the short cut menu. 3. In your myfiles private folder, or a subfolder you may have created under private, right-click and select Paste (or click and press CTRL+V). 4. Once your file is safely copied to your myfiles, Delete the file from your local computer. Another option to copy files over is to drag and drop. Select a file or folder with your right mouse, then while holding the right mouse down, drag the file or folder from your local computer to your myfiles. Release your right-mouse and select Copy from the short-cut menu. Important Tips Do not transfer all of your files at once this can take a very long time for your computer to process. Do transfer a subset of files/folders with each copy and paste, making sure to delete the files from your local computer after each transfer. Tips to speed things up To copy a range of files/folders, Select the first file, then press and hold your keyboard s Shift key while you select the last file in a range. To copy your selection, release your Shift key then press Ctrl+C (Copy), or right-click one of the selected files and select Copy from the short cut menu. To copy multiple files/folders that do not fall within a range, Select the first file, then press and hold your keyboard s CTRL key while selecting additional files/folders. To copy your selection, release your CTRL key then press Ctrl+C (Copy), or right-click one of the selected files or folders and select Copy from the short cut menu. Dragging and dropping: For either of these options, you can also drag and drop by dragging one of the selected files or folders with your right mouse. The rest of your selection will follow.
