2 1. What to Bring to the Family Tree Maker 2017: Lab 1 Today 1. Dealing with Your FTM Files in the Lab 1. You need to bring a flash drive with 2-3 FTM files (i.e. Smith.ftm ) on it. They can be any version of *.FTM. 2. Then follow one of the three options listed on the next pages: Option 1: Loading Your NEW FTM2017 file from your flash drive onto the lab computer. Option 2: Loading Your OLDER FTM file from your flash drive onto the lab computer. NOTE: FTM17 DOES NOT WORK WITH OLDER FTM FILES. THEY MUST BE CONVERTED TO FTM17. Option 3: You have no flash drive and want to create a tree from your notes or tree that you bring to the class on FTM 2017 directly on to the computer. You should still bring a flash drive to save your file if you want. 2

3 2. YOUR FILES: OPTION 1: Loading Your NEW FTM17 File from Your Flash Drive Onto the Class Computer 1. If you have loaded your flash drive with FTM17 file, follow these directions: Insert the flash drive into the computer, turn on the computer, click the icon-ftm2017, and it will load FTM2017. Then 2. Click the Plan button up on the main toolbar to open the Plan workspace. 3. On the New Tree tab, click Import an Existing Tree. 4. Click Browse to locate the file you want to import from your flash drive (usually the E or F drive). 5. Click Close. The tree opens to the People workspace, where you can start entering your family information into FTM17 from the file imported from your flash drive. 3

Loading Your FTM15 (the older version) File from Your Flash Drive and converting it to If you have loaded your flash drive with an older FTM file, Follow these directions: Insert the flash drive into the computer, turn on the computer, click the file icon-ftm2017. NOTE: FTM17 DOES NOT WORK WITH OLDER FTM FILES. E: THEY MUST BE CONVERTED TO FTM17. You will be greeted with this message: --FTMB 2017 icon (backup file) --FTM File 2017 icon (regular file) This converts your old file to the usable FTM2017 file 4

5 4. YOUR FILES: OPTION 2 (cont.): Old FTM Files FTM Old Backup File 2017 Generally can t open must restore it first To open a ftmb: Click File>Restore. Then Open the file as a ftm file FTM Old Family File 2017 When you try to open old FTM Family Files (before 2017), you will get this message: Click Convert, it will then update the file, and then open it 5

6 5. YOUR FILES: OPTION 3: Start a New FTM2017 File Using the Computer Lab Computer Lab Computer 1. Computer Lab: Put your flash drive into the computer if you plan to save your file. 2. Turn on the computer 3. Click on the FTM2017 icon. 4. You will come to FTM. Click on New Tree if not importing a file from your flash drive. 5. Start Screen: Enter What You Know - Start typing in names and birthdates of known individuals to begin a new tree file. 6. Name the File class 7. Click on File Location location, e.g.: [ E: USB20FO ] class You may have other trees of your own 6

11 10. FTM Workspaces Next classes 4 1. Gives you a list of the trees you have ready to open 2. THE PLAN WORKSPACE. Start a new tree, view information about your tree, and manage tasks 3. Build your family tree and see people displayed as families and individuals 4. The Web Search workspace lets you search billions of records on Anccestry.com and FamilySearch.org to find more information about your relatives. You can also search other websites and easily download discoveries into your tree. 11

12 The Plan workspace is the control center where you manage your trees. If starting a new tree, there are three methods to get the data into the software: 1) Enter What You Know - Start typing in names and birthdates of known individuals to begin a new tree file. 2) Import an Existing Tree - Import a file by browsing to the file's location on the computer or removable media. GEDCOM is a standardized format that contains text only and no media; other file formats from different genealogy software programs, including previous versions of Family Tree Maker, can also be imported (and updated) 3) Download a Tree from Ancestry This list will tell you if you have linked this tree with Ancestry.com 11. 13 12. Searching FamilySearch (1) You can search Family Search Family Tree without waiting for FamilySearch hints to appear. This will produce a list of possible matches to persons in your tree. You can then review possible matches and merge information that you find relevant and useful to your Family Tree Maker tree. Go to the Web Search Workspace In the Search Locations list, select FamilySearch.org In the right part of the window, type the information about an individual for whom you want to search. Click Find. The search results appear. Select a search result and observe the person s data in the Search Results Detail area. If this is the person whose data you want to merge into your tree, add the information to your tree. BE SURE YOU ALWAYS VERIFY THE DATA!! 13

17 16. How to Ignore the FamilySearch Hint If a hint is not relevant to someone in your tree, you can ignore it so it won t appear in your list of hints again: 1. Access the Hints for a person 2. On the Possible Matches page, click the hint you want to ignore 3. On the Search Result Detail Toolbar, click the Ignore record icon 4. The Ignore record icon changes to yellow to show that the hint is being ignored 17
