3 System Requirements The SIEVE application requires a license. In addition, your system must meet these minimum requirements. System Requirements PC Dual Core 2 GHz processor with 8 GB RAM (or better) DVD-ROM drive Video card and monitor capable of 1280x1024 resolution (XGA) 500 GB or greater available disk storage with the NTFS format Microsoft Windows : Software Windows 8 32/64 Professional (English version) with service pack 1 Windows 7 32/64 Professional (English version) with service pack 1 Windows XP 32 Professional (English version) with service pack 3 Microsoft.Net 4.0 (extended) Adobe Acrobat Reader 10.0 Adobe Flash Player (for viewing Help Videos) Note: Ensure that the Windows operating system first has the latest Microsoft.NET Framework and Windows updates installed before installing the SIEVE application. Note: These are minimum requirements for running the SIEVE application and we do recommend a more powerful system if in depth data processing will be conducted. 64 bit multi core systems are strongly recommended when available. Faster data processing utilizing multiple CPUs on multi-core computers is expected. Installing SIEVE This guide describes how to install the SIEVE 2.1 software 3

4 Contents o o Opening the Thermo Launcher Installing the SIEVE software Opening the Thermo Scientific Product Launcher Before you can access the SIEVE Install Shield wizard, which installs the software, open the Thermo Launcher window. To open the Thermo Launcher window 1. Log on to the computer as an administrator. If you are installing the software, you must be a software administrator. 2. Verify that you are an administrator by choosing Start > Settings > Control Panel >Administration Tools > Computer Management > Local Users and Groups >Groups > Administrators (this path is different on Windows 7 systems). In the Administrators Properties window, verify that you are a member of the administrators, or have an administrator install the software. 3. Insert the SIEVE software DVD into the PC. If the auto-play is set for the DVD drive, the Thermo Launcher installation window appears automatically, as shown in Figure 1. Figure 1: Thermo Launcher window If this window does not appear, use Windows Explorer to open the installation file. In the Windows Explorer window, select the appropriate DVD drive and double-click the ThermoLauncher.exe file. Installing the SIEVE software Use the SIEVE InstallShield wizard to install the software. 4

5 Note: The following procedure assumes that you have already installed Microsoft.NET Framework 4.0 on your computer. If you do not have Microsoft.NET Framework 4.0 installed on your computer, install it before you install SIEVE 2.1 (you can install both of them from Thermo Launcher). Click Microsoft.NET Framework in the Thermo Launcher window shown in Figure 1 and complete the pages of the wizard. Note: You must install MSFileReader before installing SIEVE 2.1. If you do not have MSFileReader installed on your computer, install it from the Thermo Launcher. Click MSFileReader shown in Figure 1 and complete the pages of the wizard. If you are installing msfilereader on a 64 bit computer, check both 32 and 64 bit system during the installation process. To install SIEVE 1. In the Thermo Launcher window, click SIEVE 2.1 software. The installer automatically recognizes whether the operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit and installs the appropriate version. The SIEVE InstallShield wizard appears, as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2: Welcome page of the SIEVE InstallShield wizard 2. Click Next to continue. The License Agreement page appears, as shown in Figure 3. Figure 3: License Agreement 3. Read the license agreement. If you accept the agreement, select the I Accept the Terms of License Agreement option, and click Next. 4. On the Thermo License Activation page of the wizard, shown in Figure 4, enter your SIEVE product key. Also enter your complete and correct contact 5

6 information, which is necessary for registering your software correctly on the licensing server. The product key is in xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx format. You can find it on the DVD jewel case. The SIEVE application retrieves your permanent license from the licensing server and licenses your software. The installation continues. If you incorrectly complete one of the fields in the Thermo License Activation dialog box, a red exclamation point appears next to it. Move the cursor over it to see an explanation of the error, as shown in Figure 5. Correct the error before you continue with the installation process. Figure 5: Error Tool Tip Note: If you need help in installing or licensing the software, click Export the License Request in the Thermo License Activation dialog box, save that file, and contact licenses.ms@thermo.com with a short description. Attach the file. 6. Click Install 6

When you click Install, the system begins to install the SIEVE software. 7. Once the software is finished installing the InstallShield Wizard Complete (Figure 7) will appear. Click Finish to complete the installation. Figure 7: Setup Finished message box 8. If you want to view the report, click Yes. If you do not want to view the report, click No to end the installation. If you click Yes, the Installation Qualification report opens as a PDF file. 7

8 The DVD also includes example raw files and SIEVE results. Click Browse DVD on the Thermo Launcher window (see Figure 1 page 4) to access those files. Installing the License For KEGG Pathway Analysis To License KEGG Pathway Analysis: 1. Open SIEVE software. 2. Click Help tab 3. Then select License Administration Figure 8: Help tab in software 4. After Thermo License Manager window opens, select Add Activation Code, and enter the pathway activation code and press activate. 5. Check in the Thermo License Manager window to make sure the licenses are activated. Figure 9: Thermo License Manger image after adding pathway license key Installing the SIEVE Software Without an Internet Connection Currently SIEVE 2.1 cannot be installed without an Internet connection. This will be addressed in a service pack. Please contact licenses.ms@thermo.com for assistance. Installing SIEVE Viewer 8

9 SIEVE 2.1 can be used as a viewer (no data processing only review of existing SIEVE.sdb result files). The SIEVE viewer does not require an active license, therefore if you install the software and cancel the license activation set (figure 4) the software will install the viewer. Also if you have a demo version of the software and the 30 day trial license expires the software will continue to function as a viewer as well. 9
