Before Using the Product About the converter This product is a media converter that converts USB port of a PC to a GPIB communication port compatible to IEEE-488 standard. With the USB cable (1.8 m) included in this kit, it can be connected to any equipment with GPIB interface without any GPIB cables. Furthermore, this product is powered by the bus so that simple and compact GPIB communication system can be established. This product accompanies Windows driver and LabVIEW driver. Features - Capable to communicate with GPIB communication which is compatible to IEEE-488.1/488.2 standards at 1.5 M byte/sec maximum. Capable to communicate with any equipment which is compatible to IEEE-488.1/488.2 standards with transfer rate at 1.5 MByte/sec maximum. Capable to set this product to whether a master (controller) or a slave. - Compatible to USB1.1/USB2.0 and not necessary to power this product externally as the bus power is used. Compatible to USB1.1/USB2.0 and capable to achieve high speed transfer at HighSpeed (480 Mbps). Not necessary to power this product externally as the bus power of USB is used. With the USB cable (1.8 m) included in this kit, it can be connected to any equipment with GPIB interface without any GPIB cables. - Employs a buffer memory, 2 Kbytes for transmission and 2 Kbytes for reception. Employs a buffer memory, 2 Kbytes dedicated to transmission and 2 Kbytes dedicated to reception, in order to reduce the load to the CPU when transmitting/receiving. - Windows/LabVIEW compatible driver libraries are attached. Using the attached driver library API-USBP(WDM) makes it possible to create applications of Windows/LabVIEW. In addition, supplies a diagnostic program to confirm hardware operation and to perform a basic communication test with connected equipment. - Employs a high speed GPIB controller which is self-developed and capable to supply stable. A self-developed GPIB controller (µpd7210 registers compatible) is employed so that a stable supply is available. - Embedded Line Monitor Function With a readout feature for entire control lines (with latches), it is capable to read data from applications. - Built-in SPAS event function (when slaving) In addition to the functions of the earlier GPIB controller (µpd7210), the product also supports the SPAS event generated when a serial poll occurs. This gives you a high level of flexibility in constructing your system. GP-IB(USB)FL 1

Driver Library API-USBP(WDM) (Bundled) It is the library software, and which supplies command of hardware produced by our company in the form of standard Win32 API function (DLL). Using programming languages supporting Win32API functions, such as Visual Basic and Visual C++ etc., you can develop high-speed application software with feature of hardware produced by our company. API-GPLV(W32) library supporting LabVIEW (Supplied: Stored on the API-USBP(WDM) CD-ROM) API-GPLV(W32) is a driver created according to the National Instruments Corporation s GPIB function style. The driver is software to control the CONTEC GPIB board using a LabVIEW-based GPIB system or existing application program. Storage When storing this product, keep it in its original packing form. (1) Put this product in the storage bag. (2) Wrap it in the packing material, then put it in the box. (3) Store the package at room temperature at a place free from direct sunlight, moisture, shock, vibration, magnetism, and static electricity. 12 2. Setup 2. Setup This chapter explains how to set up the product. What is Setup? Setup means a series of steps to take before the product can be used. Different steps are required for software and hardware. Installing the driver This section enables you to prepare the software and hardware by operating in accordance with each step in this chapter using the bundled CD-ROM. Taking the following steps sets up the software and hardware. You can use the diagnosis program later to check whether the software and hardware function normally. 13 2. Setup Step 1 Setting the Hardware This section describes how to setup the converter and connect it to your PC. 14 Setup Setting a Module ID The host computer distinguishes and keeps track of the modules of same model by assigning Module IDs to them. Factory settings 00 can be used when only one module per model is connected to one computer. Each module should be assigned a unique Module ID in the range of 00-7Fh when several modules with the same model are being connected. There are two rotary switches, moreover, x16 and x1 represent high bits and low bits of Module ID respectively. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar to open the cover on the underside of the GP-IB(USB)FL. This exposes the rotary SW to set the Module ID. As shown in Figure 2.2, an easy way to open the cover is to insert the tip of the screwdriver into the slot on the underside of the connection cable and then rotate the screwdriver. Figure 2.2. The following description assumes the operating system as Windows XP. Although some user interfaces are different depending on the OS used, the basic procedure is the same. Points - If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, please log on as Administrator (authorized account) before proceeding to the following steps. 16 2. Setup Points - Please set up the supplied CD-ROM if it has not been set up. The menu starts automatically. - If the menu do not start, launch X:AUTORUN.EXE(X:CD-ROM drive) from [Run ] in Start menu. - The screen design may be different. - C-LOGGER is Data Logger Software for Analog Terminal. This product don t need to install C-LOGGER. - Utility is tools for USB Module.This product don t need to install Utility. Installation of API-USBP(WDM) Development Environment Installation of development environment is namely installing supplied online help and sample program in all language in order to use API function. (1) Clicking on Install Development or Execution Environment. [API-USBP(WDM) Installer] dialog box displays. GP-IB(USB)FL 11

17 2. Setup (2) Selecting Advanced GPIB communication. For more details on installing API-GPLV(W32), refer to the P21. (3) Clicking on Install Button. 18 2. Setup Step 3 Installing the Hardware Under Windows, information about the converter needs to be detected by the OS. This is called hardware installation. When using multiple converters, install one at a time and complete setup for the previous converter before starting to install the next converter. Connecting the converter (1) Turn on the power to the PC before connecting the product. (2) When the PC has been up and running, plug the USB interface connector to a USB port in the PC. The converter can also be connected to the PC via a USB hub. USB ports Figure 2.4. Connecting to a PC CAUTION It may cause a trouble in recognizing and operating the device according to the kind of USB hub. If you use the USB hub, we encourage you to take advantage of the CONTEC s product loan service to confirm operation before purchasing. 19 2. Setup Setting with the Found New Hardware Wizard (1) The Found New Hardware Wizard will be started. In Windows Vista, Because the driver s installation is completed by Installing the Software, it is not necessary to operate it about the Hardware Wizard. (2) Select Install from a list or specific location[advanced], then click on the [Next] button. Detect setup information from supplied CD automatically for installing USB driver. * The name of the converter you have just added is displayed. - GP-IB(USB)FL Point Please specify the path for supplied CD as follows in the case of failure in detecting automatically. 20 2. Setup Setting Properties Using Device Manager After connecting converter with a PC and completing driver installation, open Device Manager and set properties. (1) Starting Device Manager From [Start] menu, click on [Settings]-[Control Panel]-[System] and then click on [Device Manager] button in [Hardware] tab. * The name of the converter you have just added is displayed. - GP-IB(USB)FL - In the case of Windows 98/Me Right-click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] to start device manager. GP-IB(USB)FL 15

21 2. Setup (2) Setting the Device Name Right-clicking on the converter name and selecting [Properties] displays [Converter Properties]. Open [Common Settings] tab and enter arbitrary name in the editing box for device name. (Default name also can be used.) CAUTION USB driver can not be used without settings. Settings must be performed. (3) Clicking on [OK] button Device name is set by clicking [OK] button. Points - When the application developed by users is running on another PC, please perform foregoing operation on the target computer. (No need to install software introduced on next page) - Please use the device name specified in last step for initialization function when initialization is performed using API function. When running on other PC, it can run without changing the application for the same device name being specified. 16 GP-IB(USB)FL

How to connect the connectors Connector shape To connect an external device to this product, plug the cable from the device into the interface connector (CN1) shown below. 23 3. External Connection Notes on cable connection The GPIB has restrictions on the number of devices connected and the cable length according to the standard. (1) The maximum number of interfaces (external devices) is 15, which can be connected to one system. (2) The maximum total length of cables that can be used to interconnect a group of devices in one bus system is 2 m x (the number of devices) or 20 m, whichever is shorter. (JIS C ). Note, however, the individual cables between devices must be within 4 m long. Some examples are given below. - System with a total of two devices 2 m x (Number of devices = 2) < 20 m The maximum total length of cables for this system is therefore 4 m System with a total of three devices 2 m x (Number of devices = 3) < 20 m The maximum total length of cables for this system is therefore 6 m. The two cables used in the system must be [2 m + 4 m] or [2 m + 2 m] in length so that neither is longer than 4 m. - System with a total of fifteen devices 2 m x (Number of devices = 15) > 20 m The maximum total length of cables for this system is therefore 20 m GP-IB(USB)FL

24 3. External Connection (3) The cables in the system must not form a loop (4) Unplug the cable from any device which is left off for some reason such as a fault. (5) When powering the measurement system, turn on the measuring instrument first and then on the PC. (6) Neither unplug/plug the cable nor turn on/off the device during communication. Doing so stops the operation or causes an error, resulting in trouble. (7) The talker and listener must be addressed to talk and to listen, respectively, by the controller before the talker can send messages to the listener. (8) At least two thirds of all the devices connected must be turned on. For EMC measures (1) For the radiation EMC measures, attach the ferrite core to *1. (2) For the transmission EMS measures, attach the ferrite cores to *1 and *3. (3) For the static electricity measures, attach the ferrite cores to *1 and *3. Then, attach a copper wire to *2 using copper foil tape to connect to the earth. * 1 * 2 * 3 - *2 represents the frame and signal grounds of this product. - It is effective to use 2turn when attaching to *3. - We recommend the ferrite core of SEIWA ELECTRIC MFG. CO., LTD. (E04SR301334) - For meeting the standard level of CE mark, it is effective to perform (1)(2)(3). - For meeting the standard level of VCCI, FCC, it is effective to perform (1)(2). 26 4. Application Development 4. Application Development The API-GPIB(WDM), API-GPIB(98/PC), and API-GPLV(W32) driver libraries are provided for application development. The following sections describe each and the main programming languages that can be used. API-GPIB(WDM) API-GPIB(WDM) is the GPIB driver for CONTEC's new API specification. It is simpler than API-GPIB(98/PC) in areas such as the setup for multiple GPIB communication converters. If you are developing a new application or are an existing user of the "GPIB Development Environment in API-USBP(WDM)", please install this library. API-GPIB(98/PC) The API-GPIB(98/PC) driver uses the same API specification as the GPIB driver in API-PAC(W32). If you want to use the same API specification as the GPIB driver in API-PAC(W32), please install this library. The "Runtime Only" part has a minimum configuration and provides an environment for running the applications you develop. The "Develop" contains the files required for application development. (NOTE : Be sure to make the device recognized by the OS prior to the operation above with API-USBP (WDM) in the attached CD-ROM.) API-GPLV(W32) API-GPLV(W32) driver is the same driver as GPIB driver for LabVIEW in API-PAC(W32). If you want to use the same API specification as the LabVIEW driver in API-PAC(W32), please install this library. Run the X:Apipac\Gplv\Disk1\setup.exe (X : CD-ROM drive) from the [Run] of start menu. The "Runtime Only" part has a minimum configuration and provides an environment for running the applications you develop. The "Develop" contains the files required for application development. Run the X:Apipac\Runtime\Gplv\Disk1\setup.exe (X : CD-ROM drive) from the [Run] of start menu. GP-IB(USB)FL 21

27 4. Application Development For using API-GPIB(WDM) When using API-GPIB(WDM), which is included with API-USBP(WDM), for development, please refer to the online help and sample programs. Reference to Online Help Click on [Programs]-[CONTEC API-USBP(WDM)]-[API-USBP(W32) Help] from [Start] menu. The information for application development, such as function reference is provided in [API-USBP(W32) Help]. Detailed introduction to search method for help should be found from [How to navigate Help] in the help. Printing Function Reference Clicking on Print button from online help prints the page being displayed. It can be printed entirely as follows in the case of referencing to printing function. As figure shown on the right, selecting mark and clicking on Print button prints all the topics under the mark selected at a time. 22 GP-IB(USB)FL

When the driver is installed, existing applications such as LabVIEW can operate CONTEC GPIB products. For details, refer to the help file. Run diagnostic program, open Properties for converter of device manager and then click on [Diagnosis] button in [Common Settings] tab. 38 Application Development Version Upgrade How to Upgrade the Firmware Firmware is namely software which is embedded in converter. Up-to-date firmware(update file) will be supplied in the homepage of our company in the case of function upgrade and so on. The following presents how to update the update file downloaded from homepage to converter. (1) Removing converter Please make disconnection when USB port is being connected. (2) Set Module ID to FFh Set Module ID to FFh. Point It is special setting for firmware upgrade. Modules should be performed firmware version upgrade one by one. Upgrade for multiple modules can not be performed at the same time. (3) Connecting converter with USB Port Please connect converter with USB Port. (4) Starting Firmware Upgrade Tools [When API-GPIB(WDM) environment] Click on [Programs]-[ CONTEC API-USBP(WDM)]-[Firmware upgrade tool] from [Start] menu. [When API-GPIB(98/PC) environment, API-GPLV(W32) environment] Click on [Programs]-[ CONTEC API-PAC(WDM)]-[GPxx* 1 ]- [Firmware upgrade tool] from [Start] menu. (*1): [GPxx] means [GPIB] or [GPLV]. (5) Specifying Upgrade File Clicking on [Browse] button specifies the file which has been downloaded. (6) Clicking [Start Upgrade] Button Upgrade is completed automatically. It is suggested that you should return to initial state and perform installation again when the operation is losing stabilization. Moreover, the method of returning to the initial state is different depending on OS. Please initialize it by the method of suitable for OS used. Step1 Uninstalling Driver and the development environment - Uninstall procedure for Windows 7, Vista and Windows Server 2008 <Uninstall of device driver> 1. Run Device Manager. From [My Computer] - [Control Panel], select [System] and then select the [Device Manager] tab. (You can also open Device Manager by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties.) 2. All of the hardware that uses the API-TOOL(WDM) driver is registered under the CONTEC Devices tree. Open the device tree, select the hardware to uninstall, and then right-click the hardware. From the popup menu, select [Uninstall]. 3. A dialog box opens asking you to confirm whether to uninstall. Select the [Delete the driver software for this device] checkbox, and then click [OK]. 44 5. Functions 5. Functions This section describes the functions of the converter. Basic GPIB Functions Master/slave function The converter can be used as either the master (controller) or slave, depending on a setting in the property page. When used as the master, the converter can send IFC (InterFace Clear) at any timing and control the REN (Remote ENable) line. Communication function The converter can send and receive data in accordance with the IEEE 488 Standard. You can add delimiters and EOI (End of Identify) to outgoing data depending on the software settings. Serial poll/parallel poll/srq send functions The following functions can be used depending on the master/slave configuration. Master Serial poll Parallel poll Slave Status byte setting SRQ (Service ReQuest) transmission Response to parallel polling My address setting The GPIB address (my address) of the converter can be set by API-TOOL Configuration (API-GPIB(98/PC)xx) or Configuration Utility (API-GPLV(W32)). 45 5. Functions Additional Functions Line monitor function The states of all control lines (IFC, ATN, SRQ, REN, EOI, DAV, NRFD, and NDAC) can be read. The latch data can also be read. Communication using FIFO memory The converter can use on-converter FIFO memory for communication. As the converter controls this form of communication, it can be performed at high speed irrelevant to the PC s CPU speed. Note, however, that the actual communication speed is set to the speed of the slowest device in compliance with the GPIB standard. 40 GP-IB(USB)FL
